Response to “Retired too early…

One was structural reasons. They had to rewing the aircraft, as they were wearing out too fast, There was a competition to build the new wings, and Boeing won.a competition which Boeing won. But the new wing wasn't any better than the first, and it was costing way too much money. So they dropped the program.

The second one was that they were actually building the successor, the A-6F. They later thought that the A-6 was no longer survivable in a true conflict, even in A-6F form. Its huge radar helped to make it a big target, and, it was slow. Besides, they were designing the new A-12, and it was to be stealthy. So the reasoning was, why spend money on a what was to be an obsolete system within 5 years. So they canceled it. so that they could put the money towards the A-12 production.

Little did they know that the A-12 was to be stillborn. The F/A-18E/F was meant to be a low risk replacement for the A-12. I haven't heard of any complaints about the super hornet from any Navy guys.

Now, the F-35 appears to have a lower performance than the super hornet, because they think, with the new radar all combat will occur before the airplanes get close together, so the don't need the higher performance needed for air-to-air combat. We will see.
