Want to do a 1/72 F-8D, prob is, there is no 1/72 F-8D. The old Fujimi kit is a no go based upon what I have located to date. But Muroc Modles makes a conversion for the F-8A and I need to know if the A and D were prety much the same exterior wise (nose seems to be the big deal on Crusaders)or if this is a non-starter.

They are the same pretty much...

...the A model did not have strakes on the back end of the airframe, other than that you really can't tell them apart. The nose of the A is the same as the D so I would go ahead with that conversion set you mentioned.

Looks as if the project is a go. Esp snce I was forwarded several great pics of VMF(AW)-451 F-8Ds aboard the Forrestal.

looking at actual parts shows

July 5 2009, 1:55 PM

looking at the actual parts shows that the C conversion is a better start for a D

the A nose part has the scribed panel line for the earlier smaller radome than the B,C and D versions,,also, the C nose has the grating on both sides instead of just Starboard side as on the A and B

if you can find an A kit, they should also have the C kit in stock, and the instructions tell how to build each version you can get from each one

if you have no choice but the A, just fill in the small radome line, and add the grilling to match both sides

Apprecieate the info, helps tremendously. Any other areas I need to address when using the Academey F-8E and C conversion to make an accurate D?

when you get the C conversion set, you'll have a full set of instructions to do the D also (also, a proper H),,,,he included notes to build all the versions that can be built from each conversion set
