While we are not quite finished with the F-84F project the time has come to start painting the A-7E. So, last week we tried as we could to get the airplane cleaned prior to paint. Saturday and Sunday I spent a good part of the morning masking area we do not want paint on. Today I sprayed primer. Even after some hard work washing the airframe I still found areas that were dirty. It should be 106F today, so that paint will be cooked on! I think I sunburned the bald spot on top of my head.

The fin cap and radome need some fiberglass work, they will be painted later.

After cleaning:

After priming:

And what we are going for:

I hope to spray the gloss white tomorrow and the gloss Gull Gray Thursday.

are you using Gloss Light Gull Gray because of a Museum maintenance requirement?

Just asking because that is a 1970 era paint scheme

It will replicate the airplane as it entered service in 1970.

The first cruise for this airplane was with the Rampagers aboard the Forrestal in the Med in 1970. As it will be outside for the time being a gloss finish will hold up the best. Besides, I do not like the tactical scheme she carried at the end of her career!

"holding up to the weather" is why I was asking

I think one of the reasons that the paint was changed from Flat to Gloss was because of the effect the elements was having on the finish of the Flats

I was just curious,,,,,,that looks like another fun project for you to work on

enjoy
