Hi,
I am the new owner of a motor built by Clay Smith with "Blitz III" stamped in the block. It features Evans heads and intake (slant for boat angle) and plummed for water intake. Also has a WICO magneto, Clay Smith hand ground cam etc. It is belived that Clay built this motor in 1948.
After doing some research with prior owners we believe that this is the motor that belonged to Robert Bogie and the hydro named "BlitzIII" .
We would love to validate our research and noticed this quote from your site:
ON A SAD NOTE:
225 ci hydro racer, Robert Bob Bogie passed away September 24,2000. Bob was a veteran of World War II. He ran his 225 ci Ventnor hydroplane Blitz in the 1946 Gold Cup at Detroit, MI. In 1949, Bob took his new Blitz III to Trieste, Italy, where the Blitz was the first three point hydro to compete. In 1996, Bob was the recipient of the Daniel J. Murphy award. Our sympathies are extended to his family and friends
Would you happen to know anyone who knew Bob and might know something about this boat and engine?
We also have as owners, Alex Everhart, Gene Long, Jim Obrien, and Rick Bickle Sr (who apparenty found the boat hull w/ engine in a backyard back east, so the story goes; the hull was shot apparently and Bickle Sr handled the restore on the motor).
Any help would be greatly appreciated. I feel that history like this is hard to keep, and would be worthwhile to validate.
Thanks much!
Enclosed are a couple pics of the motor..
Best,
Rick Krost
