SATURDAY AUGUST 12TH AND IT'S A HAPPY 8TH BIRTHDAY TO US ….
As the song says … "It goes to show you never can tell". Eight years ago
there were some pub gigs and an Arts Centre, the occasional "name" act and
just a few gigging bands under the age of twenty-one. Touring acts were
rarely seen. Now, driven by Fibbers, York has a music scene envied
countrywide. Over one hundred gigging bands of a high standard and a good
proportion of those still at school but quite capable of blowing away
older, established touring acts. A seven-night-a-week venue with a big PA,
lighting rig, full-time promotions/ticket offices, award-winning website
and a contacts network enabling local acts to gig almost anywhere in the
country. Gig-goers of York, take a bow 'cos it's you that's made it all
possible - even if you had to be dragged here in the first place! So, our
birthday is special and it's probably the only genuine CHARITY gig you'll
encounter. ALL door money goes to the chosen charity. Not "after expenses"
or "the profits" - EVERYTHING. You generally give us about £1000 on the
day which goes to worthy causes like The Samaritans or The Unborn Baby
Trust so give yourselves a slap on the back and get ready for more
feelgood giving - and a bloody good day and night out. Yes - it's Fibbers
Eighth Birthday Party. Ever thought where you'd be without us? Afternoon
bands include The Goosehorns, The Surf Sluts, Jason Bell's Level 42
tribute, Hayley Hutchinson and the outrageously talented Accidental
Tourists with special guest and mighty atom blues-hollerer Leslie
Chambers. At night, you can see Breathe, Cognac, Coasta, Eff.Com and
Super8 (ex-Cockroach, our first Battle of the Bands winners). We only ask
for a donation during the day but night tix will be £4 - a bargain and
let's see if we can get to £1500 this year!
FOOD TIMES NOW EXTENDED AT THE GOLDEN FLEECE!
Yup. As well as serving from lunchtime all through the day and early
evening, due to exceptional demand WE WILL NOW BE SERVING FOOD UNTIL 9PM.
There are four separate dining areas including the main bar which is now
NON-SMOKING. Our menu includes the traditional fare such as Steak & Ale
Pie, fish dishes and steaks all prepared and served by one of the best
kitchen brigades in York under head chef Tim Mallinson.
So, what's a-coming up then?
JULY AT FIBBERS
Wed 26 - CLOSED FOR PRIVATE PARTY
Magali's leaving bash - vous remercier pour travailler pour nous, la bonne
chance et nous espérons à vous voit encore bientot. You, too, can have us
all to yourselves, just call Tim/Angie on 01423 521176. There are no
hidden charges, no unpleasant lifting or bending and no-one will call at
your house.
Thu 27 - STONE COLD + Uncle Dirty + Reverb
Launching their new album, AUDIOGASM, this exciting and hard rocking
Pickering act plays mainly originals with a few covers by the likes of
Guns'n'Roses, Foo Fighters and The Manics. You might have caught them here
recently supporting Dumpy's Rusty Nuts. Currently in the British finals of
the Emergence 2000 Battle of the Bands competition (1st prize is a 4-week
tour of both the USA and Germany - phew!) and working with Steve Roberts
(ex-UK Subs) who will be doing a short guest slot at this gig.
Fri 28 - THE SURF SLUTS
The band that has quietly mutated from occasional party act to full-blown
Dick Dale meets The Damned. Thoroughly recommended if you like your bands
to be anarchic, off-the-wall and completely free of all the last ten
year's (at least!) influences. Not quite The Impotent Sea Snakes, more The
Tubes meets The Beach Boys. They rock. They party. And Fez sings.
Sat 29 - FOUR DAY HOMBRE + Lapdog + Benson
Whoa - what a gig this is turning out to be. A Battle of the Bands One and
Two with Lapdog's "fragile romanticism smothered with metallic guitars" in
the sandwich. First up, the glorious power-pop of Benson (Checkout Girl /
Where Do We Go From Here). Headlining is the magnificent "widescreen pop"
of Four Day Hombre whose influences range from dEUS to Counting Crows
through Belle and Sebastian (figure THAT one out). As a notorious
commentator said recently, "Four Day Hombre are making music the rest of
us will be listening to in a few years time. We can say we were there".
Sun 30 - "URBAN SOUL"
Promoted by Al Murphy, expect a laid-back evening of live acoustic music
and DJs playing soul and hip hop. We'll have the tablecloth-and-candles
setting that sets the relaxed atmosphere so well.
Mon 31 - RAT SALAD - TRIBUTE TO BLACK SABBATH FEATURING OZZY OZBIRD
Featuring Ozzy Ozzbird, truly gritty and authentic heavy-gigging Sabb
tribute. Iron Man/Paranoid/Sweet Leaf and lots more. Listen to a lot of
the metal bands around these days, they all owe a debt to the boys from
the Black Country!

AUGUST AT FIBBERS
Thu 03 - YORK ROCKS
Young musicians thrown together to produce bands and good music - and just
4 days to do it. The results are stunning. Organised by York City Council
Performing Arts.
Fri 04 - DISPOSABLE HEROES - METALLICA TRIBUTE
Formed in 1980, Metallica were greatly influenced by DiamondHead, Iron
Maiden, Angel Witch, Samson and Saxon all of whom were part of The New
Wave of British Heavy Metal - at it's peak between 1979 and 1982. Their
third album, Master Of Puppets with it's inexorable, intense and melodic
sound, forever changed the face of "thrash metal" and an 8-minute track
gave tonight's band their name. Featuring anything up to TWO HOURS of
Metallica Music covering material from 1983's debut Kill 'Em All right
through Master of Puppets, …And Justice For All, Metallica, Load and
Reload. Metallica are the biggest rock band in the world and this
North-East act, which has appeared here twice already, more than does them
justice - recommended!

Sat 05 - ORCA + Surge + The Asylum Seekers + Trigger
Since the 1998 BYT Final at the T&C, Leeds 4-piece Orca have commanded
regular countrywide headline gigs as well as supports to Electrasy and
Dark Star. Influenced by The Who, Stones and Zeppelin through to Nirvana,
U2 and Jeff Buckley, they're hard to pigeonhole but one reviewer tried
"21st century rock". Their last couple of gigs here have resulted in
enormous post-gig demo-sales and Vicky Hamilton of Charm had this to say
in February, "…The band beat their guitars almost to destruction, their
lead singer's attitude "we are here and you're going to listen." We need
no persuading. Orca are awesome. Futuristic, experimental prog rock, tasty
lyrics and pumping bass lines combined with a drummer who is the driving
force. The vocals are sweet, then angsty with a satirical edge. The
guitars ring out like bells then crash like thunder…"
Thu 10 - HONEYTONE CODY
First inspired by The Foo Fighters, Elle & Elliott Nelson's band debuted
at The Duchess in Leeds in 1997 as Alkaline. Their first release, Pink And
Clean, was released in July 98 and overseen by Bill Nelson. Countrywide
gigging followed (including The Rock Garden) and, as well as John Peel,
their new album received USA airplay. No less than twenty A&R attended
their 1999 In The City showcase at The Beluga Bar and it was so packed
even the band had difficulty getting back in! Their latest CD 'Believe in
the Promise of Tomorrow' was recorded (in the best rock'n'roll traditions)
in just seven days at Fairview, again produced by Bill Nelson. After this
series of gigs, the band will again be doing dates in London and America.
Fri 11 - THE ASYLUM SEEKERS + Edible 5' Smiths + Skiddoo
A big slice of Americana-pie, acoustic folk-rock with Chapin-esque songs
and delivery.
Sat 12 - FIBBERS 8TH BIRTHDAY PARTY WITH CANDLES, JELLY AND ICE-CREAM, THE
LOT
See above for more details.
Thu 17 - THE OLD DAIRY MEGAJAM
This just in, details to follow ...
Fri 18 - BREATHE
Explosive, smart-alec monster rock from the mercurial Justin Jamieson and
Co. Walking like John Wayne, stepping on every crack in the pavement and
killing yourself for the last time (with Sheena and Lenny - who else) are
set to become part of York's language and folklore for years to come.
Continually self-cast as the underdog (forget that when you see 'em!),
they've been blowing off headliners (er ... you know what we mean) like
Terrorvision, Stereophonics and The Supernaturals for years. When Justin
hurdles that barrier, best make sure he's not looking for you ...
Sat 19 - SOOTHSAYERS
Intense, slo-burn indie reminiscent of Longpigs and Radiohead. Fronted by
Jimmy, also of Tahoma. More details of this gig as soon as we have them
...
Tue 22 - THE GWYN ASHTON BAND
Once courted by Fleetwood Mac, Gwyn Ashton built a reputation in Australia
as being one of his country's finest blues/rock guitarists. After playing
the venue and festival circuit for 20 years, recording 2 solo CDs and
conducting Blues guitar workshops at The Melbourne Music Festival and
Guitar Show, Gwyn relocated to the UK in 1996 where he's appeared twice at
The Great British R&B Festival. He is also a regular 5 gigs a week club
circuit performer either with his band or solo with a National steel
guitar, slide, harmonicas and a stompbox. Unsurprising, therefore, that
Gwyn is endorsed by Fender and Trace Elliot and has appeared with Mick
Fleetwood, Robert Cray's Band, Junior Wells, Steve Morse, Albert Lee, Rory
Gallagher, Sue Foley, The Hellecasters, Peter Green, Dr. Feelgood, Wilko
Johnson, Mick Abrahams and many others. Also, Paul Jones has been playing
Gwyn's music on Jazz FM. Appearing here at Fibbers with his band including
Chicago-born drummer Michael Wiedrich who has played with Taj Mahal,
Curtis Knight, Jimmy Dawkins and Lefty Dizz.

Thu 23 - MATRIX
60s to 90s mix of indie, rock and acid jazz.
Fri 25 - MY VITRIOL
This gig finally confirmed but put back one day from the original
Thursday. Currently on the Radio 1 buzzchart as well as playing live on
Steve Lamacq. Getting more fashionable by the minute, explosive young
grunge rock contenders My Vitriol are the most likely to succeed out of
the current crop of new guitar bands. Sri Lanka born singer Som
WijayWardener's way with a tune which, when coupled with the fondness for
distortion pedals, fills the vacancy for a home-grown Foo Fighters. Check
out their new very radio-friendly single Cemented Shoes. They won't be
small for long ...

Sat 26 - AYNSLEY LISTER
Aynsley Lister has already been described by Stan Webb (Chicken Shack) and
ex-John Mayall player Coco Montoya (with whom he guested at the famous
Lou's Bar at Pier 49 in San Fransisco) as one of the best young blues
guitarists to emerge in many years and his new album "Aynsley Lister" has
been produced by the world renowned Jim Gaines and features a dynamic duet
with legendary bluesman Walter Trout. Rave reviews followed from Burnley,
Oxford and Colne Blues Festivals and he appeared alongside artists such as
Walter Trout, Buddy Guy and Bernard Allison. Aynsley is just as happy
playing acoustic country blues as well as those 'spine tingling' electric
solos that have become his trade mark! "One of a new breed of talented
young singer/guitar players who herald a new future for the blues" - Paul
Reed of Blues Archive

Mon 28 - FOUR STAR MARY + Suriki
Ever wondered who was really behind DINGOS ATE MY BABY - the fictitious
band on the hit Warner Brothers' TV show BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER? Take a
bow FOUR STAR MARY, the most popular USA band nobody has heard of. A
less-aggressive version of The Foo Fighters/Pearl Jam, this Los Angeles
radio-friendly rock band has toured since the '90s and are finally coming
to the UK. Neither ham-fisted grunge-grinders or self-effacing moaners and
definitely not cocksure rock posers, their chunky poprock packs a melodic
punch as only the Yanks can do! If you're into anything from The
Wildhearts through Redwood and The Stone Temple Pilots to Blink 182 - this
is your gig. We have a lower age limit of 16yrs.

Thu 31 - THE FAB BEATLES
Widely regarded as the best soundalike and lookalike UK Beatles tribute,
they pride themselves on total authenticity using exact equipment
(Rickenbacker/ Gretsch guitars, Hofner violin bass, Ludwig super classic
drums), Vox AC 30 and AC 50 amps and four costume changes from the early
Cavern suits to full St Pepper regalia. Formed in 1991, recognition has
even come from the BBC and they will be appearing live on "The Battle Of
The Fantasy Bands" show in July 2000, hosted by Terry Wogan & Ulrika
Johnson. The full show comprises of four sets, the Cavern / Hamburg /
Mop-Top period, the Rubber Soul / Revolver times, Sgt Pepper and finally
the songs from Abbey Rd and Let It Be. Here's what recent audience members
have had to say, "The audience were singing as loud as the band and
drowning out the P.A" … "As someone who grew up in the 60's, to us The
Beatles were the musicians of the era. I would like to say how much we
enjoyed the performance; the professionalism and musicianship giving the
whole evening an authentic feel" and from Keith Fordyce (presenter, Ready
Steady Go!), "During their show I closed my eyes and went back thirty
years". Later on in the month, the band will be appearing at the Beatle
Week Festival in Liverpool.

Longhorns. One of the most technically-able blues players around today,
Jim opens "Somewhere Somehow" with and nifty fretwork tribute to surf knig
Dick Dale. Live show features original material as well as covers by the
likes of T Bone Walker, Hendrix, Stevie Ray Vaughan, BB King and Willie

Sun 10 - MAN
Still with the three hardcore members Deke Leonard, Micky Jones and Martin
Ace, here is a classic lates 60s to 90s band defying categorisation.
Definitely, guitar-driven hard biker-rock but still with heavy influences
from their early psychedelic era. Bluesy and at times soulful, they've
been influenced by the West Coast sound, especially Quicksilver Messenger
Service and have worked with Dave Edmunds and toured with Hawkwind as well
as their own exhaustive schedules. Expect material from Rhinos Winos and
Lunatics, Be Good To Yourself At Least Once A Day to the present day. If
you're into The Hamsters, Nine Below Zero, Lizzy, Nine Below (you get the
gist) this is definitely your thing! Anyone for Bananas, Spunk Rock and

Fri 15 - THE NUMAN PRINCIPLE + Kim Dolphin
The brainchild of lifelong Gary Numan obsessive Jason Smith (£6000 hair
transplant, same sausage and chips diet, clothes, jewellery …!) and named
after the classic first "Cars" album The Pleasure Principle, his band
perfectly recreates that powerful huge synthesiser sound using percussion
loops (AND a live drummer as well) and choppy, metallic rhythmic guitars.
Twenty years and thirty chart singles later, Gary Numan is still a genuine
star, much copied and selling out annual tours including America where his
latest album Exile enjoyed rave reviews. Supported here by the debut of
Anton Witter's new Depeche Mode/Gary Numan retro dance/guitar show, ex-The
Groove Twins. (£4.50 advance - tickets available from our Ticketline on

Sat 16 - THE HAMSTERS - 30TH ANNIVERSARY HENDRIX SHOW
Now in their 12th year and set to perform their 2750th concert in the
summer of 2000, The Hamsters ARE the U.K.'s premier Blues-Rock attraction.
Widely regarded as leading interpreters of Hendrix and ZZ Top, they're
equally comfortable playing the blues or tearing into hard-rocking
originals. In the summer of '95 they performed at Fairport Convention's
huge annual festival at Cropredy and the U.K.'s largest biker festival,
The Bulldog Bash, on the same day - a total of 50,000+ people rocked
Rodent style! Originally forming for their own amusement and taking their
name from the Sex Pistols (who once used it as a pseudonym to outwit
hostile councils), The Hamsters enjoy the irony of being an aggressive
band with a cuddly name and individual members have performed with artists
such as Eric Clapton, Alison Moyet, Doctor Feelgood, Walter Trout, Art of
Noise, Robin Trower and the late great veteran of British Blues, Alexis
Korner. Snail’s Pace Slim, The Reverend Otis Elevator and Miss Zsa Zsa
Poltergeist await your company and early arrival is most definitely
recommended for their special HENDRIX 30TH ANNIVERSARY CONCERT here at
Fibbs. All tix £6.50 available from our TicketLine 01423 521176 or Online.

A celebration and contemporary tribute to the music of her main influence
Elvis Costello, this is a brand new project from stunning
singer-songwriter and classically-trained pianist Lou Dalgleish, appearing
here with an excellent band of "musician's musicians". You probably last
saw Lou nationally supporting The Christians at the end of last year. The
press hail her as the British contender to the likes of Tori Amos, Sinead
O'Connor and Sheryl Crow and she regularly sells out Ronnie Scotts, has
played the NEC with Wet Wet Wet and toured with the likes of Bryan Ferry,
Sophie B Hawkins, Mary Coughlan and Heather Nova. Van Morrison cohort,
Brian Kennedy, contributed backing vocals on her first album and,
bizarrely, if you look closely you'll see her in Spielberg's Indiana Jones
and the Temple of Doom!! "Pure Quality" OOR MAGAZINE (£5 advance - tickets

OCTOBER AT FIBBERS
Fri 06 - SAM BROWN
East London born in 1964, Sam's parents - Joe and Vicki - were already
well-established in the UK music scene and she followed in their
footsteps, her first paid session at 12yrs old being for backing vocals on
the reformed Small Faces album "In The Shade". An established musician by
her late teens, Sam was much in demand on keyboards and backing vocals and
by her twenties had toured and recorded with Stevie Marriott, Sade,
Spandau Ballet and Barclay James Harvest. At the same time she was honing
her songwriting skills, ultimately leading to her own deal with A&M and
the 1987 worldwide smash "Stop", an atmospheric bluesy ballad that topped
the charts in ten countries. The album sold over 2.5 million and the next
three years were spent in a whirl of promotional activities and recording
follow-up million-seller "April Moon". The death of her mother inspired
the intense and moving "43 Minutes", finally released independently in
1993 after which Sam took time out to have a family before returning to
the fray on Pink Floyd's "Division Bell" and subsequent world tour and
live album. In 1995, she worked with Jools Holland's Big Band and duetted
with Fish on his new album, from which the single ("Just Good Friends")
charted in the UK and Europe. in 1996, as well as touring for the first
time with her father Joe, the Nordoff-Robbins Music Therapy record
"Reaching Out" was released on which Sam sang and played Hammond organ
along with the likes of Brian May, Andy Fairweather Low, Paul Rodgers and
Charlie Watts. It's been a few years since the gorgeous Sam graced Fibbers
and we're really looking forward to the return of this this superb
musician and down-to-earth entertainer.

Sat 07 - FRAGILE - TRIBUTE TO YES
Did you see the rave reviews in Q recently? We just know you're going to
be astonished with this one as they accurately cover such a huge breadth
of material from The Yes Album right through to The Firebird Suite. We're
not going to list them, trust us the classics are all there including
Henry VIII excerpts. Even original guitarist Peter Banks has performed
live with them (venue trivia question for a couple of free tix to this gig
- Name the "revealing" Yes-sounding band that Peter Banks went on to
perform with - answers to fibbers@fibbers.co.uk). Here's what the press
has to say, "One of Yes’s strong points has always been the ability to
snap from gentle, pastoral tenderness straight into fast and furious
aggression, the soloing flashing from point to point, and Fragile covered
all that". "The good news is that Fragile are more than capable of cutting
the mustard, their set being a truly mouth watering 11-course Yes meal".
"Steve Carney, the singer, matched quite easily Jon’s high pitched notes …
his vocal performance was quite simply stunning … not encountered a great
singer like him for many moons … his voice could be the envy of many a
progressive band … Fragile more or less matched Yes’s complex vocal
harmonies". More details on the band's website.

Sun 08 - HELEN WATSON (SOLO) + Hayley Hutchinson
If only there were such a thing as a physical melting pot where taste and
talent were allowed to brew. If the ingredients were as diverse as blues,
jazz, soul and funk then the end product would surely be Helen Watson.
Here’s what Ronnie Scotts had to say, “There’s no arguing with claims
citing her as one of the country’s premier jazz/blues singers” and Rob
Beattie from Q Magazine, “A truly great blues performance. What a voice”.
Helen has worked with Little Feat, Albert Lee, Joe Cocker and in female
supergroup Daphne’s Flight with Christine Collister, Melanie Harrold,
Chris While and Julie Matthews. She can also be found on the LINDA
RONSTADT/EMMYLOU HARRIS album “Western Wall” and appears as a solo
performer at Fibbers this evening. Support from popular local
singer-songwriter Hayley whose new CD, "Halo", is getting heavy rotation
on the Fibbers Towers ghetto blaster. (£4 advance - tickets available from

Fri 13 - BREATHE
Unlucky for some, and usually those at the front when supercharged
frontman Justin Jamieson displays his Battle of the Bands winning style
and hurdles the barriers to mix it with the crowd. Walking like John
Wayne, stepping on every crack in the pavement and killing yourself for
the last time (with Sheena and Lenny) are rapidy becoming part of York's
language folklore. Unmissable, exciting, Terrorvision-esque full-frontal
rock - with a smile. Or nurse's uniforms. Or Windscale boiler suits. Or

Sat 14 - WILKO JOHNSON
The annual October gig by Canvey Island r'n'b legend, and original ex-Dr
Feelgood and Blockhead. Appears here, as ever, with the equally legendary
Norman Watt-Roy on bass (also a Blockhead and recently on tour with Ian
Dury) and Salvatore Raimundo on drums. Rock trivia: Norman played and
wrote the unforgettable 3-note "Relax" riff on Frankie Goes To Hollywood's
controversial first No 1.

Sun 15 - THE VIGILANTES OF LOVE
Exciting Texas-based band whose garage/punk style belies their roots and
folk songwriting-in-depth. They are great favourites of Bob Harris and we
thank everybody who wrote in to his show saying how much they enjoyed Bill
Mallonee & Co's last show here. If you're a fan of REM, The Walkabouts and
everything inbetween, this is your night. We're just waiting to confirm

debut album (on which Noel plays drums on six tracks) in August. The
brainchild of vocalist/guitarist Mark Coyle, it is still unclear as to
whether Noel will play live with the band. With these connections, one to
watch ...
Tue 17 - SLAID CLEAVES + Lynn Miles
>From the age of three he was picking though the family record collection
of Hank Williams, Johnny Cash, The Beatles, The Everly Brothers and Woody
Guthrie but began his career busking on the streets of Cork. In May '92
Slaid's americana country/folk songwriting won him the prestigious New
Folk competition at the Kerrville Folk Festival, putting himself in the
company of Robert Earl Keen, Steve Earle and Lyle Lovett. Feb '97 saw the
release of No Angel Knows, his grainy voice passed down from Guthrie and
Dylan working with folk and country music's richest themes to evoke
Williams to Springsteen with his mandolin-flecked rockabilly sound. The
album had a warm, rustic feel that earned him a seat at the table with
Steve Earle, Lyle Lovett, and Robert Earl Keen. A recent reviewer said,
"Slaid Cleaves' voice is caked with dust, his hands are coated with grease
and transmission fluid, his veins bear the marks of 5 years spent as a
medical guinea pig for a drug testing firm, and his imagination runs over
with visions of dying towns, rebuilt V-8 engines, and the ghost of Hank
Williams". A genuine opportunity to catch a USA original before
stadium-size opportunity takes him away. (£7 advance - tickets available

Wed 18 - IAIN MATTHEWS
Ex-Matthews Southern Comfort ("Woodstock") and Plainsong, here is an
opportunity to hear one of the most enduring and engaging songwriters and
musicians whose work spans the decades. This just in, more details to
follow. (£7 advance - tickets available from our Ticketline on 01423 52 22

Fri 20 - CHUCK PROPHET (WITH BAND)
Mainstay of San Francisco rockers Green On Red (forerunners of the Paisley
Underground movement), Chuck Prophet is the least heralded guitar player
of the '80s and '90s, with songwriting skills to match his prodigious
instrumental talent. Swamp/country rock with snappy guitar fills (imagine
Johnny Cash, John Fogerty and John Hiatt swapping songs) with honey and
vinegar harmonies a la Gram Parsons and Emmylou Harris make Chuck a sort
of Tom Petty meets Clapton. Throughout his solo career, he's worked with
legends and inspirations from Bob Neuwirth to Jim Dickinson to Billy Swan
and beat poet Hubert Huncke, and most recently with Austin guitarist
Calvin Russell. Another opportunity to catch a legendary USA guitar and
songwriting icon! (£9 advance - tickets available from our Ticketline on
01423 52 22 45 or from the venue)
Wed 25 - WHO'S WHO
As seen on LWT, Channel 5, Sky, Channel 1, L!VE TV and heard on Virgin
Radio, GLR, Talk Radio and Capital Gold. All the energies, passion and
angst of The Who at their peak recreating the classic hits and capturing
the atmosphere of those heady times. Not only is the music spot on but a
closer visual representation would be very hard to find and even The Who
can't manage to resurrect Keith Moon like they have. Drummer, Paul
(Moonie) Kemp resembles Keith so much in his looks and playing style that
Keith's mother invited him home for tea when they met at a fan club
convention! Their exciting live performances with Townshend's leaping and
Daltrey's microphone whirling antics receive incredible reactions and at
one of them Pete Townshend's brother, Paul, danced at the front of the
stage for the whole performance ecstatically declaring later that the band
were "Astounding and brilliant!" The band is a five-piece and incorporates
keyboards in order to authentically reproduce the full orchestration of
the albums 'Who's Next' and 'Quadrophenia'. "Check 'em out - they're the
best" - Roger Daltrey. "Professional attitude … indiscernible from the
real thing … the stage show is accurate to minute detail" - The Stage

Thu 26 - THE LOVELIES
Often likened to The Wedding Present, this mid-nineties formed guitar-pop
act did much to define the genre whilst penning classic material - but
remaining essentially cult. Expecting to confirm any day now ...
Sat 28 - TUNG
Tung are the mightiest thing to hit York in recent years and it's only a
matter of time before the whole country has to endorse the words of
Kerrang - "the best live band in Britain". After supporting The Bloodhound
Gang and playing to nearly 15000 people earlier in the year, they return
here after a three-month break from local gigs. Tung's heavy hip-hop brew
reminds of Beastie Boys/Cypress Hill but draws on so many more influences
from Hendrix to present day. "A melting pot of hip hop and hardcore
grooves, moves and musical abuse" - recommended. Tix available nearer the
date.
Sun 29 - KATHRYN WILLIAMS
Little Black Numbers, the follow-up album to the independently minded folk
musician Kathryn Williams' first release, Dog Leap Stairs, has garnered
rave reviews throughout the quality press including Mojo and Q. Harking
back to the introspection of the 70s with instrumental Drake-isms,
off-kilter guitar and the orchestral arrangements had Q reviewer Rob
Beattie raving, "With this memorable and reputation-enhancing set, KW will
struggle to keep her music quiet for much longer" **** (£6 advance -

Tue 31 - THE SURF SLUTS - ALBUM LAUNCH
NOVEMBER AT FIBBERS
Sat 04 - KINKY FRIEDMAN
Imagine Raymond Chandler crossed with the anarchic humour of Art Buchwald.
Imagine a wisecracking, cigar chewing, ass-kicking ex-lead singer of the
outrageous country and western band The Texas Jewboys ("They Ain't Making
Jews Like Jesus Anymore") who evolves into a cat loving sleuth. Then you
can roughly conjure up an image of "The Kinkster" as he is affectionately
known by legions of his fans. He burst into the crime scene in 1986 with
the outrageous Greenwich Killing Time featuring himself as the eponymous
crime busting Gumshoe. The fun of it all is Kinky populates his
irreverently witty books with people he knows, often featuring them as
cheats, cons and murderers much to their glee. With a passion for Havana
cigars and love for life, all we can wish for is for Kinky to live forever
and ever, with a fully stocked up humidor and finely oiled typewriter.
Welcome back to Fibbers, sir. (£8.50 advance - tickets available from our

Fri 10 - LIMEHOUSE LIZZY
When the cry of "Are you out there" first went up in 1993, who'd have
thought the Thin Lizzy tribute of frontman and uncannily-accurate Phil
Lynott sound and lookalike Wayne Ellis would go on to be one of the most
popular and well respected tributes worldwide. Featured in Mojo, Vox,
Loaded and most national newspapers (including nearly carrying off News of
the World's Best Tribute Poll) they recently headlined The Phil Lynott
Commemoration in Dublin as well as appearing on MTV and headlining St
Patrick's Day celebrations in New York. Film buffs - check out their
posters in Godzilla! In a blistering show nearing two hours, you'll hear
pretty much everything you ever remember of Lizzy including rare album
tracks for the purists. But be warned - early arrival is essential as
their last show here in January sold out … (£5 advance - tickets available
from our Ticketline on 01423 52 22 45 or from the venue)
Wed 22 - THE JAMM
As Bruce Foxton said after seeing them at Guildford in '97, "They are true
to the original sound of The Jam", praise later backed up by Rick Buckler
who gave them 9/10 when they played at the launch of the official Jam web
site. Using the same instruments, sound gear, dark suits and ties, they
recreate the punk era feel but play material through the years including
Strange Town / Tube Station at Midnight / A Town Called Malice / That's
Entertainment / Going Underground and Eton Rifles plus album material as
well. Also included is The Bitterest Pill - a song that The Jam never
played live. In April, frontman John Southorn appeared on Stars In Their
Eyes as Paul Weller performing Wild Wood shortly after which they embarked
on their first Japanese tour which took in Tokyo and Osaka. Check out
their excellent web site at www.thejamm.f9.co.uk/ (£5 advance - tickets

DECEMBER AT FIBBERS
Fri 01 THE VIBRATORS + SPLODGENESSABOUNDS + THE NOSEDIVERS
Twenty-one years ago The Vibrators (now still with original members Ian
"Knox" Carnochan and drummer Eddie) supported The Stranglers, and with The
Sex Pistols and Chris Spedding they were part of the first, famous 100
Club Punk Festival. Their first single "We Vibrate" (one of the first ever
punk releases) was followed by charting album "Pure Mania" which was
promoted on tour with Ian Hunter. A Top Of The Pops appearance followed
with "Automatic Lover" and 2nd album "V2" reached number 35 and is still
regarded today as one of New Waves finest moments. Punk/Oi favourites
Splodge have released their first new album in ten years and it`s
hilarious! Produced by Sex Pistols knob twiddler Dave Goodman and
featuring a host of Punk celebrities, it`s funny and powerful and probably
Max`s best work since the early 80`s and "Two Little Boys". Two pints of
lager and a packet of crisps - PLEASE!
Sat 09 - WATERSON CARTHY
What a line-up. Ex-Steeleye Span and Albion Country Band member Martin
Carthy MBE and his family have bestrode the folk scene for decades. He
appears here with equally-revered wife Norma Waterson and daughter Eliza
Carthy who you may recall played here with her band last year shortly
after narrowly failing to scoop a Mercury Prize with her album "Red Rice".
The band is joined by Tim Van Eyken. (£7.50 advance - tickets available

Fri 31 - THE LO BEAMS
RESIDENCIES AT THE BLUES BAR, HARROGATE
We're always open all day and night for possibly the best laid-back
atmosphere in town. This is the area's original and longest established
non-formula Amsterdam-style (without the "other" menu!) cafe bar and new
Assistant Manageress, Anna Cook (from Fibbers) has now joined the team. If
you're taking a trip to The Blues for the first time, head down the main
road in to the town centre (with The Stray on your left) and turn left
opposite The Cenotaph but BEFORE the pedestrian crossing! "Bettys" is on
this corner, as well. Probably the funkiest, coolest little bar around and
entry to all gig is FREE. Now there's a first for us …
Every Thursday - THE PAUL MIDDLETON BAND
Rootsy, down-to-earth blues from some of the best players in the area.
This every-Thursday residency started as an informal jam and has grown in
to one of the best examples of local practitioners of the blues and r'n'b
showing how it's really done - from the soul.
Every Sunday afternoon - DICK TURNER
A marathon Springsteen-esque mix of acoustic and originals. A great Blues
Bar favourite, Dick will now be appearing every Sunday afternoon making
way only for The Dr Brown's Blues Duo once a month.
Every other Monday (next gig Monday July 31) JAZZITUDE
A subtle blend of delicious jazz flavours old and new mixed with a dash of
hip-hop, drum'n'bass and dub. Over to organiser Mark Percival - "Jazzitude
is a creature endeavour of musicians with free-style rapper DJs and horn
players and a relaxed, chilled night that will leave you fulfilled with
vibes". Charm magazine has this to say, "One of the most aurally pleasing
things I have ever heard". Recommended!

Fri 29 - THE PATRICK MOORE CELEBRITY LECTURE
In his unique, engaging yet down-to-Earth way, Patrick Moore media
personality and the UK's leading stargazer, presents the extraordinary
events of the last 45 years in space in this fascinating , amusing and
thoroughly entertaining talk, "Into Space". On a grand journey of space
exploration, and using the latest colour slide projections available,
Patrick takes his audience to the Moon, the Planets, the asteroids and
comets; and then right out into the Galaxy. What about "other life"?
Patrick offers a survey of this as well, and in doing so a fascinating
prospect for the human race emerges. "Into Space" is a highly entertaining
talk and is suitable for all ages. And who knows - perhaps a member of the
audience is destined to be the very first person to set foot on Mars...!

OCTOBER AT YORK BARBICAN CENTRE
Thu 05 - GRAHAM NORTON
And from the man himself ... "At last! No irritating guest to interrupt
me. You are guaranteed filth, a shiny suit and a phone call". In his first
series of So Graham Norton, the camp yet sharp presenter promised a chat
show with a difference. "My show doesn’t have the traditional sofa," he
explained, “It has three chairs and a pouffe!". In truth, it has a lot
more. There’s a steady stream of star guests engaging in a battle of wit
and wits, a kitty-phone on which to call sex lines, and salacious surveys
in which Norton exposes the audience’s little secrets on live TV. But
then, what else should we expect from the man who introduced Ivana Trump
to phone sex, praised Sweep’s debut impression of Pavarotti and revealed
to the world that Judith Chalmers doesn’t wear knickers Wish You Were
Here. "I said we’ll broaden the show, " he says pointedly, adding that
this actually means "We’ll stretch it thinner – it will never get deep. I
leave that to the Mark Thomases and Chris Morrises of the world. I can’t
find humour in the topical and most of the time I don’t understand it." He
was nominated for the coveted Perrier Award in Edinburgh and in 1987 won
the British Comedy Award for best newcomer. Around this time Graham also
appeared on Father Ted, The Jack Docherty Show, co-presented Carnal
Knowledge and, more recently, Rock Babylon for Channel Four. He is also a
regular contributor to Radio 4’s Loose Ends. Graham clearly has a love for
the silly, superficial, unexpected and outrageous, but also says, “I am
the show and I feel very passionate. At the end of the day, I’m the
gobshite sat in the chair, so I have to believe in what I’m doing”.

Wed 11 - BJORN AGAIN
Credited as being the best Abba show world-wide, they are now in their
12th year with over 1850 shows in 43 countries under their satin belts!
Even Wembley Arena is booked for them this year and in Feb ’99, Benny
Andersson said, “Fans had better make the most out of Björn Again because
that's the closest they are going to get to seeing ABBA. We will never
reform!" Started in 1988 by Melbourners Rod Leissle and John Tyrell, the
band mastered “Swenglish” and initially played in pubs but were soon
playing at recognised conventions to 6000+ audiences. Their first ever UK
show was at Wakefield's "Rooftop Gardens" on May 21 1999 and the first UK
TV appearance followed the day after - a live performance of "Dancing
Queen" on the Jonathon Ross Show. Even the credible NME published a 4-page
feature although the editor of Melody Maker wrote: "Bjorn Again - what a
bunch of ***** ! The next journalist who comes up to me to do the Bjorn
Again story gets it in the throat". Metallica and Nirvana are fans and, in
’92, the Reading Festival promoter was threatened that they wouldn't
perform unless Björn Again were added to the bill. In one of the last
Nirvana interviews just before Kurt Cobain's tragic death, Dave Grohl can
be seen wearing a Björn Again T-shirt. That same year they were invited to
meet Benny and Bjorn of ABBA at their Stockholm Studio. Whether guesting
with The Spice Girls, playing Gay Pride or, memorably, being hired in ’97
to play to a staff party of just 50 (!), Bjorn Again remain the most
successful cover band of all time.

Tickets are selling fast for Michael's two shows following last year's
sell-outs. Born 1962, Michael’s first professional appearance was in
Godspell and his first major break was a star part in The Pirates of
Penzance followed by a West End appearances in Les Miserables, Phantom Of
The Opera and Aspects Of Love. In May 1992 Michael finished second in the
Eurovision Song Contest, with One Step Out Of Time and his own TV show The
Michael Ball Show followed. He also released the album "The Movies". 1999
was another very hectic year being voted the Royal Variety Club's Best
Recording Artist in February and undertaking a UK tour in March/April
followed by his first solo concert outside the UK at the Theatre Carre in
Amsterdam. 2000 started in a very special way - Michael performed in Kuala
Lumpur,Malaysia as part of their New Millennium celebrations. (£22.00 and

Sun 15 - STATUS QUO
AND I LIKE IT I LIKE IT I LIKE IT I LIKE IT I LI-LI-LI-LIKE IT, HERE WE
GO-OH! ... er ... rockin' all over the Barbican. Fifty four UK singles
(including twenty two Top Tens), more than 100 appearances on Top of the
Pops, four hundred and twelve weeks in the British singles chart, it just
goes on and on and so does the band still with original members Francis
Rossi and Rick Parfitt. What's your favourite Quo era? The Matchstick Men
period? How about the dirty rock'n'roll period of Caroline and Down Down?
Maybe it's the "clever" mid-eighties of In The Army which proved beyond
doubt that they are genuine songwriters. Whatever your time capsule,
they're in York for you but it doesn't seem fourteen months since their
baby gig at The Duchess …

Fri 20 - THE WATERBOYS
Led by, and always revolving around, Scotsman Mike Scott whose intense
presence and lyrics are the characteristics of the band. Formed in 1981
and terming themselves a "big music" rock group for their first three
albums including the 1990 UK Top 10 re-release "Whole Of The Moon", they
moved to Ireland at the behest of fiddler Steve Wickham from In Tua Nua
and took on a more folky, lyrical sound using Irish traditional musicians.
The revolving membership has included Karl Wallinger (who left to form
World Party in 1985), accordionist Sharon Shannon, sax and mandolin player
Anthony Thistlethwaite (subsequently with The Saw Doctors) and even Eddi
Reader and TV Smith. (£15.00 advance - tickets available from our

Sat 28 - CAPERCAILLIE
Capercaillie is the leading torchbearer for an innovative Celtic music
hybrid that integrates Scottish traditional styles with sleek contemporary
ambient, dance, and pop elements--bringing the music well beyond its
customary folkie boundaries. Beautiful Wasteland is constructed largely
from Gaelic "mouth music" tunes sung gorgeously by Karen Matheson and
arranged with submarine musical depths by Manus Lunny. There are showers
of synthesizers to color the fiddle and bouzouki textures, but the synths
never take precedence simply because so much is going on. Capercaillie
rivets their tunes with solid beats and then populates the sound field
with ambient vibrations and a catalog of acoustic instruments. In
addition, North African vocal duo Sibeba collaborates on two tracks,
adding a vocal dimension that further extends Beautiful Wasteland's
unassuming, profound international multiculturalism. --Andrew Bartlett

NOVEMBER AT YORK BARBICAN CENTRE
Fri 03 - MAXIMUM RHYTHM 'N' BLUES 2000
With The Manfreds - Paul Jones, Mike D'Abo, Tom McGuinness, Mike Vickers
and Mike Hugg with Rob Townsend and Marcus Cliffe. Also special guests
Chris Farlowe, Alan Price and Cliff Bennett! Following the critically
acclaimed 1999 tour and due to public demand, Maximum Rhythm 'n' Blues is
back, once again boasting some of the finest blues and r'n'b talent ever
assembled on the same stage. These artists learned their craft by playing
the exciting London club circuit in such famous clubs of the time as "The
Flamingo", "Klooks Kleeks", "Ricky Ticks", "Eel Pie Island", "Ronnie
Scotts" and "The 101 Club" creating the birth of British Rhythm & Blues.
The tour reunites the original Manfred Mann members. It is over three
decades since Manfred Mann stopped playing but, after a successful reunion
in 1991, the band injects all of the enthusiasm back into their classics
"Do Wah Diddy Diddy", "5-4-3-2-1" and "Mighty Quinn". Chris Farlowe
fronted legendary 60s R&B band The Thunderbirds but is best known for his
chart topper "Out of Time". Alan Price, initially a member of The Animals,
had huge solo hits in the 60s with "I Put A Spell On You" and "The House
That Jack Built". Cliff Bennett, originally of Cliff Bennett and the Rebel
Rousers had top ten hits with "One Way Love" and "Got To Get You Into My
Life". These pioneers of the ground-breaking Rhythm N Blues scene perform
a show that features The Manfreds on stage throughout the show introducing
all their classic hits and those of their special guests. An evening of
quality musicianship, innovation and all the hits to match! (£17.50 &

first time, four of the UK's most enduring and popular touring acts for an
unparalleled evening of energetic Rock and Rhythm'n'Blues - with a dash of
lunacy from the man who sold-out the Albert Hall, Mr. John Otway. Running

Fri 10 - THE HOLLIES
The Hollies - as you’ve never heard them before. Carl Wayne (ex lead
singer of “The Move”) joins the familiar line-up of Tony Hicks, Bobby
Elliott, Alan Coates, Ray Stiles and Ian Parker in their dazzling new
show, adding a dynamic new dimension to that trademark Hollies’ sound.
Allan Clarke retired from the band at the end of last year for personal
reasons but the Hollies assure their fans they will continue to entertain
for many years to come. The year 2000 marks a fresh beginning for the band
with brand new songs and of course the classics (He Ain’t Heavy He’s My
Brother; I’m Alive; Just One Look). Two hours of musical genius on stage
(no fillers and no special guests) - just Hollies plugged and unplugged;
raw power and wistful harmonies; ballads and hard-edged rock - however the
mood takes them. Plus their own self-deprecating wit and anecdotes from
their four decades of life in music.

Thu 16 - LEAGUE OF GENTLEMEN
TWELFTY! The Royston Vasey Local Shop, built in 1557, has remained the
Tattsyrup family home to the present day. Lord Vasey of Northumberland
bestowed his name upon the town of Royston and in 1845 Royston Vasey was
born. In 1953 The shop was ‘modernised’, the new Local Shop signs were
added (in an attempt to deter foreigners) and electric light fittings were
installed in two of the ground floor rooms although the switches were not
added until 1974. There as been little perceivable change in the last 45
years and the present shopkeepers are rarely seen outside their shop. The
genius creators - Jeremy, Reece, Mark and Steve - discovered a shared
sense of humour, a collective penchant for horror films and Rising Damp,
and a mutual quest to find a lost John Inman sitcom and, after graduating
in 1989/90, worked together intermittently in fringe theatre, remaining
close friends. Multi-award winners including the prestigious Perrier Award
and The Golden Rose (Montreux), last year closed with another two award
nominations at the British Comedy Awards; Best New TV Comedy and Best
Broken Comedy show. In March 2000, The Gents won yet another award - the
Best Entertainment Award at the Royal Society TV Awards and in May, the
coveted Bafta award for Best Comedy. “Excuud beef, have ahnybahdy got any

albums by Don Henley and Joe Walsh. What the papers say - "It was a
concert which no one wanted to end...a musical night to remember ...
outstanding", "the guitar harmonies could not be faulted and...vocals were
the lyricalicing on the cake", "The band had the songs to perfection -
it's hard to imagine that the Eagles ever sounded this good" (£13.50 &

Fri 24 - THE ALL AMERICAN SOLID GOLD ROCK 'N' ROLL SHOW
Featuring Bobby Vee, Johnny Tillotson, Brian Hyland, Little Eva and, for
the first time in the UK in 30 years, Freddy Cannon - all accompanied by
The Vees, together in concert. A 15-yr-old Bobby Vee and hastily-formed
band famously stood in for Buddy Holly, The Big Bopper and Ritchie Valens,
missing that snowy February evening in 1959 and went on to record Devil or
Angel, Rubber Ball and The Night Has A Thousand Eyes. Little "Locomotion"
Eva was discovered by Carole King and Gerry Goffin when they hired her as
a babysitter and Freddy "Boom-Boom" Cannon's discography includes
Palisades Park, Way Down Yonder In New Orleans and Tallahassee Lassie.
Brian Hyland recorded many hits, the most popularly-played of which are
Itsy Bitsy Teenie Weenie Yellow Polka Dot Bikini, Gypsy Woman, and, of
course, Sealed With A Kiss. Johnny Tillotson first love was country but
had a dozen Top 40 hits including Poetry In Motion, It Keeps Right On

Sun 26 - DAVID ESSEX
David started singing and playing drums semi-professionally with The
Everons in East End pubs, but it wasn't until 1971 when he played Jesus in
"Godspell" that his career began taking shape. After his portrayal of Jim
Maclaine in Top Ten box office success "That'll Be The Day" which won him
the Variety Club "Most Promising Newcomer of the Year' award, David
collaborated with Jeff Wayne to record "Rock On" a UK and USA No 1. "Gonna
Make You A Star" and "Hold Me Close" quickly followed. West Ham and
cricket fanatic David next starred in "Stardust" in 1974, returning to the
West End in 1978 to play Che Guevara in "Evita". He wrote the music for an
starred in "Silver Dream Racer" and hosted his own BBC TV series, "The
David Essex Showcase". Not just a pretty face (!), David's next project,
the musical "Mutiny!" with Frank Finlay ran for 16 months and was
nominated for "Best Musical' in the Ivor Novello awards. Meanwhile, Tim
Rice and Mike Batt wrote "A Winter's Tale" especially for him and it shot
up to No 2. Since the early nineties, David has staged his own Christmas
musical version of "Robinson Crusoe" around the country to great success
and was invited by Sir Peter Hall to work with Donald Sinden in the
classic "She Stoops To Conquer", worked on ballet scores and continued
working abroad in volunteer music and drama projects. So much more than a
