Phew. How much news? Like Tim's waistline, we've expanded again!
On with the show:
OCTOBER AT FIBBERS
Sun 22 - QUEEN ADREENA + Little Hell
Ex-Daisy Chainsaw partnership Katie Jane Garside and Crispin Gray now have
a much wider perspective than a one-track take on banshee pop. Serrated
guitar lines, mighty power-loaded grooves and sometimes a barely-there
twist of trip-hop minimalism, Bjork and PJ Harvey come to mind. Kate Bush
fronting Nine Inch Nails?

Mon 23 - ELEMENT + Freak KO
In this excellent Scarborough band's own words, "Dark funk metal Faith No
More meets Placebo at koRn's house". They certainly made an impression
with York audiences in their previous appearances, especially in the
Battle of the Bands, prompting one infamous reviewer to say, "They look
like they mean it and rock with a vengeance. So far they're Ratty's tip
for the top." - The Rat. Praise indeed from one so notorious for slick
sarcasm and damning invective.
Tue 24 - EZIO
Italian-born Ezio and Mark "Booga" Fowell, hailing from Cambridge, were
originally influenced by Van Morrison, Tom Waits and Bob Dylan and have
developed their own sensitive style, a mixture of rock and folk full of
gorgeous acoustic melodies and intelligent lyrics. Often very slow and
moving, they can blasting you away with sheer power and volume that you've
never heard from acoustic guitars before

Wed 25 - WHO'S WHO
As seen on LWT, Channel 5, Sky, Channel 1, L!VE TV and heard on Virgin
Radio, GLR, Talk Radio and Capital Gold. All the energies, passion and
angst of The Who at their peak recreating the classic hits and capturing
the atmosphere of those heady times. Not only is the music spot on but a
closer visual representation would be very hard to find and even The Who
can't manage to resurrect Keith Moon like they have. Drummer, Paul
(Moonie) Kemp resembles Keith so much in his looks and playing style that
Keith's mother invited him home for tea when they met at a fan club
convention! Their exciting live performances with Townshend's leaping and
Daltrey's microphone whirling antics receive incredible reactions and at
one of them Pete Townshend's brother, Paul, danced at the front of the
stage for the whole performance ecstatically declaring later that the band
were "Astounding and brilliant!" The band is a five-piece and incorporates
keyboards in order to authentically reproduce the full orchestration of
the albums 'Who's Next' and 'Quadrophenia'. "Check 'em out - they're the
best" - Roger Daltrey. "Professional attitude … indiscernible from the
real thing … the stage show is accurate to minute detail" - The Stage

Thu 26 - THE LOVELIES + Hedspin + Deluxe
Often likened to The Wedding Present, this mid-nineties formed guitar-pop
act did much to define the genre whilst penning classic material - but
remaining essentially cult.
Fri 27 - MATRIX + Darwin
January 1999 in the pub. "Let's form a band" said Pete to Ben and Gav,
"But we can't play any instruments" was the reply, "So learn then" said
Pete. So they did and MATRIX were born! They have headlined regularly at
Fibbers amongst others and have to date recorded two demo C.D.s, the
second one TIME WAITS FOR NO MAN welcomed a new member to the band, Dave
the keyboards, who was recruited to fill in the gaps. Both the CDs sold
really well locally and received great acclaim from all directions. Have
been described as Spencer Davis meets the Who via the Verve!! Definitely a
very sixties sound with a strong Indie connection. Chuck in a bit of funk
and you've got MATRIX.
Sat 28 - TUNG + The Nosedivers + Tripswitch
Tung are the mightiest thing to hit York in recent years and it's only a
matter of time before the whole country has to endorse the words of
Kerrang - "the best live band in Britain". After supporting The Bloodhound
Gang and playing to nearly 15000 people earlier in the year, they return
here after a three-month break from local gigs. Tung's heavy hip-hop brew
reminds of Beastie Boys/Cypress Hill but draws on so many more influences
from Hendrix to present day. "A melting pot of hip hop and hardcore
grooves, moves and musical abuse" - recommended. THE BAND WILL ALSO BE
PERFORMING A SPECIAL SHOW FOR 16s AND UNDER. DOORS OPEN 6.00PM,
PERFORMANCE 6.30 - 7.10PM, ADMISSION £1. THE BAR WILL BE CLOSED!! The
venue will re-open for the evening show at 8.00pm.
Sun 29 - KATHRYN WILLIAMS + Gina Dootson + Hayley Hutchinson
Little Black Numbers, the follow-up album to the independently minded folk
musician Kathryn Williams' first release, Dog Leap Stairs, has garnered
rave reviews throughout the quality press including Mojo and Q. Harking
back to the introspection of the 70s with instrumental Drake-isms,
off-kilter guitar and the orchestral arrangements had Q reviewer Rob
Beattie raving, "With this memorable and reputation-enhancing set, KW will
struggle to keep her music quiet for much longer" ****

Mon 30 - BELASCO + Tahoma + Plan B
"If you like your guitar music insightful, tuneful, soulful and
intelligent, Belasco may well become your best new band of 2000", said
Will Storr of NME/Loaded. This is one powerful, passionate trio based
around the song-writing talent of Tim Brownlow who was subject to a great
deal of record company interest in previous band Hookey - industry bible
Music Week’s Tipped Band of ‘99. As soon as the band was formed they were
immediately offered a demo deal, which they used to record three songs
with Charlie Francis (The Crocketts / REM) and ITV used some of these
recordings for this years Euro 2000 football. The band continues to work
with Dave Bedford (Island / This Way Up) and their debut mini-album,
Simplicity, got them signed to ex-Sanctuary Simon Morgan’s new label,
Splendid Music. And the final word to Claire Sturgess of XFM, "Beautiful …
a fantastic new band".
Tue 31 - THE SURF SLUTS - ALBUM LAUNCH
Evolving from occasional party band to full-blown surfs-up Dick Dale meets
The Damned, you may have caught this eclectic, flowered-shirt mob bringing
the house down at our 8th birthday party. Fronted by the gangly, hirsute
Fez they charge through a-mumma-meows-meows with joyous irreverence
defying you to party. For fans everywhere of The Tubes, The Fabulous
Thunderbirds and, yes, The Beach Boys.
NOVEMBER AT FIBBERS
Wed 01 - TENNER + Hedspin
Another bunch of fresh-faced indie boys who can't stand still, won't keep
their mouths shut and are thrilled to entertain ad infinitum. All we can
share with you is they're from Bath, have an average age of 21 and should
be watched. Tenner's first release on Fierce Panda, 'Where Do You Come
From?' is a fidgeting spark of pop which sneers and pogos in all the right
places. The guitars make a fine old noise, the twanging bassline would do
Elastica proud and singer Jake Robertson spits and bellows in disgust as
loudly as possible. If this is the only chance he gets to impress the
world, he's certainly not going at it half-heartedly. Which is a fine
place to start!
Thu 02 - STIPETIC
The brothers Stipetic amaze with their jazz/funk/roots-tinged take on
originals and covers.

Fri 03 - BLUE RYDER + The Awesome Faces
The excellent Blueryder are one of our favourite York bands - just that
little bit different in a Talking Heads kind of way. Founded by guitarists
Steve and Rich, they originally jelled at The Rock Café. Influenced by
Floyd, Deus, Tim Buckley, Nick Drake, Radiohead and Hendrix, you might
have caught 'em bringing the house down here when supporting Hugh
Cornwell. A welcome back also to The Awesome Faces led by the fresh-faced
James on guitar/vox. Their best claim to fame so far may just be having
The Vegastones supporting THEM!
Sat 04 - KINKY FRIEDMAN + Rockabilly
Imagine Raymond Chandler crossed with the anarchic humour of Art Buchwald.
Imagine a wisecracking, cigar chewing, ass-kicking ex-lead singer of the
outrageous country and western band The Texas Jewboys (' They Ain't Making
Jews Like Jesus Anymore') who evolves into a cat loving sleuth. Then you
can roughly conjure up an image of 'The Kinkster' as he is affectionately
known by legions of his fans. He burst into the crime scene in 1986 with
the outrageous Greenwich Killing Time featuring himself as the eponymous
crime busting Gumshoe. The fun of it all is Kinky populates his
irreverently witty books with people he knows, often featuring them as
cheats, cons and murderers much to their glee. With a passion for Havana
cigars and love for life, all we can wish for is for Kinky to live forever
and ever, with a fully stocked up humidor and finely oiled typewriter.
Welcome back to Fibbers, sir. We have two of Kinky's books to give away,
just email the answer to this simple question to fibbers@fibbers.co.uk -
Which band did Kinky used to play for?

Mon 06 - SUGARTOWN + The Asylum Seekers
This just in, more details to follow ...
Tue 07 - THE BRAVE CAPTAIN, MARTIN CARR + Derrero
Childhood friends "Brave Captain" Martin Carr and Sice Rowbottom were the
core of The Boo Radleys growing up on Merseyside listening to My Bloody
Valentine and Dinosaur Jr. After initial releases on Rough Trade, the band
signed to Creation. The 1992 single "Lazarus", remixed by Flood, was a
minor hit and earned them a 1994 Lollapalooza tour and the subsequent
groundbreaking album "Giant Steps" won them an NME Brat Award. But it was
"Wake Up Boo" from 1995 gold album "Wake Up" that was to break them in the
UK, an event sadly not repeated in America deprived of any promotional
push. Martin recorded his first solo album, "The Fingertip Saint Sessions
Vol 1 " after recording "C'Mon Kids" The Radleys' wildest and most
eclectic album. His new record (due out around October 7th) is called 'Go
with Yourself'.

Fri 10 - LIMEHOUSE LIZZY
When the cry of "Are you out there" first went up in 1993, who'd have
thought the Thin Lizzy tribute of frontman and uncannily-accurate Phil
Lynott sound and lookalike Wayne Ellis would go on to be one of the most
popular and well respected tributes worldwide. Featured in Mojo, Vox,
Loaded and most national newspapers (including nearly carrying off News of
the World's Best Tribute Poll) they recently headlined The Phil Lynott
Commemoration in Dublin as well as appearing on MTV and headlining St
Patrick's Day celebrations in New York. Film buffs - check out their
posters in Godzilla! In a blistering show nearing two hours, you'll hear
pretty much everything you ever remember of Lizzy including rare album
tracks for the purists. But be warned - early arrival is essential as
their last show here in January sold out …

Sat 11 - COUSTEAU + The Asylum Seekers
North London five-piece Cousteau, and throaty, baritone vocalist Liam
McKahey (anyone for Scott Walker?) in particular, have been portrayed by
most as miserable, fragile, destitute souls who would snap like a twig
under the slightest emotional pressure. Judging by their live show,
nothing could be further from the truth. The band moves effortlessly from
lazy, trumpet-driven jazz to the dark moments of "Jump In The River",
eerily reminiscent of Nick Cave's "Where The Wild Roses Grow". Beautiful,
timeless songs and all red-wine-and-second-hand-suits, they layer flutes,
horns and violins over acoustic guitars and pianos evoking Tindersticks
covering Portishead. But it's Irishman Liam McKahey, the unsung indie
answer to Barry White, whose moody panache and heart-wrenching songs that
will send shivers down your spine. Highly recommended.

Sun 12 - THE FRAMES + The Lo Beams
With a stripped sound, low-key arrangements and all manner of vocal
effects, they produce a beguiling mix of breathless indie and gentle
country, mixed with off-kilter Americana and Irish roots. Signed to ZTT,
even back in 1996 The Frames were one of the best Irish (Cork) bands
around and there's no doubt that ex-Commitment Glen Hansard is on a par
with Will Oldham when it comes to lo-fi innovations in country folk rock.
A totally original and compelling mix of Pavement and The Pogues, York has
taken this band to it's heart.

(Elton John Band and Paul McCartney Band) plus Jeff Ross (Badfinger/Mick
Taylor Band) and Alan Thomson (Rick Wakeman/John Martyn). A blinding
concert spanning over three decades highlighting John Jorgensen's amazing
career to date including classic Byrds, Elton John, Desert Rose Band,
Bonnie Rait, Hellecasters, and solo projects.

Tue 14 - THE MUFFIN MEN WITH JIMMY CARL BLACK
When eight friends and acquaintances began working out how to play
'Peaches En Regalia' back in 1990 for a one-off gig to celebrate Frank
Zappa's 50th birthday no-one thought it would come to this. Humour was
always an important part of the Frank Zappa experience - the biting
satirical humour of his lyrics, the crazy twists and turns in the music,
the onstage clowning around. Many cover bands attempt to copy their
originals as exactly as possible - dressing like them, sounding like them,
playing their music as you might hear it on record but, by contrast, The
Muffin Men have always attempted to perform Zappa's music in their own
way, playing in their own style and clowning around as their personalities
dictate but keeping the music alive whilst imposing the highest musical
standards. Once again touring with original member JIMMY CARL BLACK, you
can expect to hear a considerable number of tunes from Frank's enormous
back catalogue including 'Zoot Allures', 'Yellow Snow', 'Rubber Shirt'
'King Kong' 'Joe's Garage' 'Take Your Clothes Off When You Dance' and
'Cletus Awreetus-Awrightus'..

Wed 15 - BLUES 'N' TROUBLE
Formed in the early 1980's by Tim Elliot, they released their first album
in 1985 and have toured and guested with BB KING and ROBERT CRAY as well
as recording with LAZY LESTER & THE SIXTH STONE and IAN STEWART. Indie
chart success followed with "No Minor Keys", and a British Blues Society
Award for "Down To The Shuffle" has helped to keep the band in high demand
for many years, often playing 250 shows per year in Britain and Europe as
well as The Memphis Blues Festival. The band's live sound is a no nonsense
mix of hard-hitting, rocking blues and boogie, reminding the listener of
The Hamsters and Nine Below Zero!

Fri 17 - HALF MAN HALF BISCUIT + The Surf Sluts
As savage as they are whimsical, Half Man Half Biscuit and Nigel
Blackwell's inimitable songwriting on the minutiae of life, football and
TV celebs quickly garnered cult status from their inception in 1984. Their
first album, Back In The DHSS, was picked up by John Peel, who delighted
in the savage mockery of minor British celebrities; all wrapped up in
tales of the everyday tedium that is life on the dole. That release became
the biggest-selling independent record of 1986 and the follow-up single,
Trumpton Riots (B-side "All I Want For Xmas Is A Dukla Prague Away Kit"),
continued this success. Other titles from that classic first album
included "F**ing Hell It's Fred Titmus", "99% Of Gargoyles Look Like Bob
Todd" and "I Hate Nerys Hughes". "Dickie Davies Eyes", "The Bastard Son Of
Dean Friedman" and "I Left My Heart In Papworth General" followed in 7"
and 12" formats. All the while and to this day, Tranmere Rovers remain
their first love and they twice turned down The Tube (refusing a
helicopter to the studio after the game) because of fixtures. After
splitting in 1986 and reforming 4 years later, they reappeared at Reading
Festival and the quirky madness continued with LPs "Some Call It Godcore",
"Voyage To The Bottom Of The Road" and "This Leaden Pall" with the Spinal
Tap-ish band spoofs "Running Order Squabble Fest" and "Bad Review". If
bitingly accurate, sarcastic and hilarious lo-fi observations on the
humdrum of life are your thing - HMHB are for you. And they're still
getting bigger.

Sat 18 - THE ROLLING CLONES
The Rollin' Clones were formed in April 1997 to celebrate the music of one
of the most successful rock bands in history and, like their idols, have a
dynamic stage show, packed full of classic Stones songs, performed with
vitality and energy, together with colourful costumes and imaginative
stage presentation. Already the subjects of an ITV mini-documentary (er …
"Rockumentary?), the band's players also have some find playing credits
including session work with Ray Davies, Francis Rossi and Mike D'Abo. NME
said, "A storming set", The Daily Mail said "The Clones stole the show ...
outstanding" and the final compliment comes from the RSSA - "This band
managed to re-create the Stones at their most prolific and do it with all
the passion and raw energy of the real thing. Great fun, fine musicians
and an excellent choice of songs ... not to be missed". Check out their

Mon 20 - THE MUTTON BIRDS + Four Day Hombre
Formed in 1991 in New Zealand, their first, self-titled album went
platinum, as did second release "Salty", mixed with American Tchad Blake
(American Music Club, Elvis Costello, Tom Waits, Crowded House). They
began visiting England in 1995 and released "Nature"(Virgin), a 12 song
compilation of "The Mutton Birds" and "Salty", with additional production
courtesy of Neil Finn, prompting Q to say, ".....Robust, sad melodies,
folk harmonies and beautifully weighted arrangements" **** The vibe
continued to build and they played Glastonbury, T in the Park and Womad
until, mid 1996, their third studio album was produced by Hugh Jones (The
Bluetones, Dodgy, Echo and the Bunnymen). Rave reviews followed,
".....unpretentious ingenuity, freshly-baked-this-morning melodies and
dark pensive lyrics" The Times, "In the first five songs on this record,
there's more melody and harmonic reverberation than on the last album by
more or less anyone you'd care to name" David Hepworth, Mojo. Deciding
that performing live and building an audience around the UK was the way
forward, in January/February of 1998 all the UK shows were well attended,
many sold out, including a rapt and rowdy 1,600 punters at The Shepherds
Bush Empire. Join us for their first UK dates in 20 months and you'll go
home singing their songs - there can be no greater praise. And the last
word, from a very relevant act, "The Mutton Birds are a very important
band!!" Colin Greenwood, Radiohead. And if going to the gig isn't enough,
by purchasing an advance ticket you could also WIN A RETURN FLIGHT TO NEW
ZEALAND! Just post a photocopy of your advance purchase ticket to Aragorn

Wed 22 - THE JAMM
As Bruce Foxton said after seeing them at Guildford in '97, "They are true
to the original sound of The Jam", praise later backed up by Rick Buckler
who gave them 9/10 when they played at the launch of the official Jam web
site. Using the same instruments, sound gear, dark suits and ties, they
recreate the punk era feel but play material through the years including
Strange Town / Tube Station at Midnight / A Town Called Malice / That's
Entertainment / Going Underground and Eton Rifles plus album material as
well. Also included is The Bitterest Pill - a song that The Jam never
played live. In April, frontman John Southorn appeared on Stars In Their
Eyes as Paul Weller performing Wild Wood shortly after which they embarked
on their first Japanese tour which took in Tokyo and Osaka. Check out

Fri 24 - MUNDY
Mundy is that rarity in post-modern pop music, "A clear, honest voice,
free of angst and ego," wrote The Irish Times, "a refreshing stream of
cosmic consciousness." His debut LP on Epic, Jelly Legs, is an album as
fresh and compelling as any you're likely to hear this year but the
sympathetic arrangements and production of Youth (ex-Killing Joke) have
brought the forceful kick of great rock 'n' roll. As he explained to Music
Week: "The songs are all folk-based, but when the band get a hold of them,
they become much more rocky. People have mentioned Nevermind, but I
ignored that album at the time and am only getting into it now. I suppose
my real influences are Bob Dylan, Velvet Underground, and lots of Dublin
bands such as the The Frames". On only his sixth live gig, Mundy found
himself opening the first of several dates on Alanis Morrisette's first UK
tour, Neil Young and festival duties at Phoenix and T In The Park. The
rich musical traditions of Ireland have yielded the likes Van Morrison and
U2 to Sinead O'Connor and Christy Moore. Now an articulate new
singer-songwriter steps forward to take his place in that lineage.

Sat 25 - NINE BELOW ZERO
Headed up by guitarist/singer Dennis Greaves with the mighty rhythm
section of Gerry McAvoy and Brendan O'Neill (a combined twenty-five years
with Rory Gallagher) and the blistering harmonica of Billy Boy they have a
live combination of lethal, hammering r'n'b that's already been nailed to
the floor of many a famous stage. Formed in South London in 1977, people
like Canned Heat, Dr Feelgood and The Blues Band quickly wanted them and
they soon headlined the Hammersmith Odeon with special guest the late
Alexis Korner, one of the founding fathers of the British blues and r'n'b
scene. Pete Townsend promptly gave them the Who tour support slot as did
Ray Davies with The Kinks. Appearances on The Old Grey Whistle Test, The
South Bank Show and a legendary appearance on the very first Young Ones
followed as well as a European tour with Sting. What a pedigree! There's
more - Eric Clapton loved what he heard and invited the band to join him
at the Royal Albert Hall for twelve successive nights. You know the score
already, this is the hardest-working, tightest, funkiest blues/rock band
around.

Wed 29 - THE ASYLUM SEEKERS + Lapdog + Planet Lounge
IT'S THEIR CD LAUNCH! Dirk "Diggler" Macrae (Dad), Andy "Springhead" Bowen
(Hair), Jeff "I Ain`t No Gypsy" Smith (Fancy Attire), "Silky" Stu Russell
(Mechanics) and Splash (Clown Shoes and Fire Breathing) came together by a
chance meeting in an Istanbul and were drawn by a love of fine wines,
cheap women, fast cars, freshly made beds and that first bite of a Granny
Smiths apple. Despite all this and Mulligan & Hare, they make "nice,
tuneful pop music" described as "acoustic-based Crowded House to Harry
Chapin". Joined here by the "angst-ridden, guitar-driven cathartic pop"
and "fragile romanticism smothered with metallic guitars" of Lapdog
(pictured).
Thu 30 - FOUR DAY HOMBRE + Farrah + Bruise
This is the music we'll all be listening to in two years time and,
honestly, you just can't pigeonhole it. Variously described as alternative
country to REM, from Massive Attack to "too aggressive for me and I used
to like thrash metal!", their two guitars, two lead vocals, bass, drums,
keyboards and decks combine in a glorious noise of melody, sweat and
emotion. Not content with a hundred gigs last year, Radio 1 Evening
Session airplay and being described by one London promoter as "one of the
few Northern bands that is easily recognisable on the London circuit",
they also achieved the Independent's "Hot 5 Tickets" recommendation for
their London debut. Supports with JJ72, Seafood, The Frames, Chuck Prophet
and Baby Bird as well as constant gigging have earned them a huge
following and brilliant reviews as well as offers of a London residency
and the main support on a One Little Indian national tour. With two CDs on
sale, talk of a single release later in the year and continual touring it
seems the only thing holding fdH back is lack of hours in a day. We've
begged you to see bands here before (Coldplay, Travis, Reef, Stereophonics
etc etc) and now we're on our knees again - highly recommended,
life-affirming, essential

Fri 01 - THE VIBRATORS + Splodganessabounds
Twenty-one years ago The Vibrators (now still with original members Ian
"Knox" Carnochan and drummer Eddie) supported The Stranglers, and with The
Sex Pistols and Chris Spedding they were part of the first, famous 100
Club Punk Festival. Their first single "We Vibrate" (one of the first ever
punk releases) was followed by charting album "Pure Mania" which was
promoted on tour with Ian Hunter. A Top Of The Pops appearance followed
with "Automatic Lover" and 2nd album "V2" reached number 35 and is still
regarded today as one of New Waves finest moments. Punk/Oi favourites
Splodge have released their first new album in ten years and it`s
hilarious! Produced by Sex Pistols knob twiddler Dave Goodman and
featuring a host of Punk celebrities, it's funny and powerful and probably
Max`s best work since the early 80`s and "Two Little Boys". Two pints of
lager and a packet of crisps - PLEASE!

Thu 07 - TONY'S COMEDY CLUB PRESENTS - NOEL FIELDING + compere and
supporting acts tbc
Born in 1973 in Westminster hospital, Noel Fielding spent most of his
childhood being chased by butterflies and moths who viewed him as a king.
At university he regularly dressed as Jesus to entertain the masses
(performing the CanCan on the cross). On stage he is a blur of boney-arsed
looseness immersed in gaily coloured hipsters, skimming the stage like a
shaved bush baby, spurting inexplicable tales of back to front rams legs,
underwater gunfights and Spanish fullstops on mopeds. His delivery is that
of an excited small child trying to impress an adult. In 96, Noel toured
with THE NEWCASTLE BROWN ALE COMEDY NETWORK, Britain’s biggest chain of
comedy clubs, and was a finalist in THE DAILY TELEGRAPH OPEN MIC AWARD,
Britain’s biggest comedy talent search. 1997 saw him starring alongside
Stewart Lee and Jenny Eclair on C5’s new stand up show THE COMEDY NETWORK,
starring in the first series of C4’s new stand up comedy show GAS and
headlining Edinburgh Festival's THE COMEDY ZONE (previously showcasing
Harry Hill and Mark Lamarr). The next year, Noel teamed with Julian
Barratt to write and star in their own show THE MIGHTY BOOSH at The
Edinburgh Festival which was a sell out success. Described as “the biggest
comic buzz at this years fringe” (Sunday Times), they won The Perrier
Award for Best Newcomer AND Noel was invited to perform at the world
famous MONTREAL ‘JUST FOR LAUGHS’ COMEDY FESTIVAL. Performing a three week
run at the prestigious SYDNEY COMEDY FESTIVAL gained Best Comedy Of The
Year and The Independent On Sunday Critic’s Choice Award for Best Comedy,
as well as a Perrier Award Nomination in 1999. In addition, Noel Fielding
appeared alongside Robert Carlisle and Johnny Lee Miller in PLUNKETT &
MACLEANE. And so to 2000, and Noel has just returned from the 2000
Edinburgh Festival where he performed AUTOBOOSH with Julian Barratt with
whom he has been commissioned to write and star in their own series for
BBC Radio. Following their success at THE SYDNEY COMEDY FESTIVAL, Noel and
Julian were invited to return to Australia to perform at the prestigious
MELBOURNE COMEDY FESTIVAL in April. Their show was a sell out success and
went on to win them The Barry Humphries Award, Melbourne’s equivalent to
The Perrier Award, being the first international artists to ever do so.
Tickets will be available soon.

Fri 08 - DISPOSABLE HEROES - METALLICA TRIBUTE + Divided By Zero
Formed in 1980, Metallica were greatly influenced by DiamondHead, Iron
Maiden, Angel Witch, Samson and Saxon all of whom were part of The New
Wave of British Heavy Metal - at it's peak between 1979 and 1982. Their
third album, Master Of Puppets with it's inexorable, intense and melodic
sound, forever changed the face of "thrash metal" and an 8-minute track
gave tonight's band their name. Featuring anything up to TWO HOURS of
Metallica Music covering material from 1983's debut Kill 'Em All right
through Master of Puppets, …And Justice For All, Metallica, Load and
Reload. Metallica are the biggest rock band in the world and this
North-East act, which has appeared here twice already, more than does them
justice - recommended!

What a line-up. Ex-Steeleye Span and Albion Country Band member Martin
Carthy MBE and his family have bestrode the folk scene for decades. He
appears here with equally-revered wife Norma Waterson and daughter Eliza
Carthy who you may recall played here with her band last year shortly
after narrowly failing to scoop a Mercury Prize with her album "Red Rice".
The band is joined by Tim Van Eyken.

Mon 11 - THE JAMES TAYLOR QUARTET
Jimmy Smith meets Georgie Fame meets Corduroy meets Mother Earth! Ten
years before anyone imagined what Propellerhead or Jamiroquai might sound
like, JTQ were producing sleazy cop-show tunes with a smart mixture of
Doorsy B3 Hammond organ, some big old trumpets and a sizeable smirk. You
don't even need to close your eyes to imagine the smell of burning rubber
on tarmac, the wail of sirens and the screech of getaway cars taking
corners on two wheels. These jazz-friendly Mod-squad groovers whose music
coined the term "acid jazz", collaborated with Tom Jones on "Looking Out
My Window" as well as appearing on the Austen Powers soundtracks. James
Taylor's soul-jazz and stinging instrumental brassy funk style started
with mod-revival band The Prisoners and continues to this day with Spring
2000 release The Penthouse Suite. WE HAVE SIX JTQ ALBUMS TO GIVE AWAY.

Wed 13 - THE JOHN ELLIS BIG BANG
An explosive 12-piece maverick jazz/soul/r'n'b ensemble with music ranging
from Ellington to Zappa. John Ellis is a multi-instrumentalist, Fender
Rhodester, analogue keyboard player, bass player, guitarist and English
teacher, and has played keys for over 24 years - with influences from
Stevie Wonder and Sly Stone to Frank Zappa. He plays everything from jazz
to contemporary, funk to classical, and has played with Hamish Stuart
(Average White band), Snake Davies, and Andy Ross (The Herbaliser), whilst
remaining a member of the The Big Bang. This band was sensational on their

Sat 16 - THE CHAMELEONS + Kings of Hong Kong
Back in the early 80s, this band troubled the brickwork in venues across
the country with their emotionally fraught pre-stadium rock that was years
before its time. Guitarists Dave Fielding and Reg Smithies manufactured
expansive choral riffs, while drummer John Lever hammered the tom-tom and
snare as if trying to knock his drum-kit into a more interesting shape.
With singer-bassist Mark Burgess adding resonant vocal pleas and strong
basslines, the Chameleons made a defiant noise but, in the dandified 80s,
some blamed the band's eventual demise on a lack of image. They were just
four ordinary-looking blokes in drain-pipe jeans and tatty denim jackets.
Judging by a recent week-long comeback residency at the Manchester
Witchwood run by innovative promoter "Pod", their awesome live display of
power and delicacy hasn't been tempered by a 14-year absence. Mark Burgess
still delivers every word as if his life still depended on it and their
irreproachable two-hour sets were all about this nerve and bone. Yes, they
were one of the best bands to come out of Manchester long before
'Madchester' and the Stone Roses / Happy Mondays roadshow. Sometimes
nostalgia can be well worth the wait - their music mattered, their gigs
mattered, and - best of all - they meant what they said.

Sat 06 - THE GROWLERS
What a seamless groove this blues band has, they have a great toe-tapping
feel to their music and definitely no pretentious stuff going on -
thoroughly recommended. You'll have already caught them at Fibbs
supporting Wilko Johnson and Aynsley Lister.
Sat 13 - KIM DOLPHIN
Formed at the close of ' 98 by Anton Witter (vocals/keyboards/programming,
ex-Groovetwins) and Roger Griffiths (guitar, ex-FMB) the seed came to
fruition in mid ' 99 with the line up being completed by Rich Deardon
(bass) and James Hunt (keyboards). Influenced by the likes of Gary
Numan/Depeche Mode/Mansun/NIN, Kim Dolphins music is "full" and awash with
dark synths, heavy loops, industrial noise and choppy guitars - best
described as "dark pop".

Sat 20 - FOUR DAY HOMBRE
FEBRUARY AT FIBBERS
Sat 10 - THE BEAUTIFUL SOUTHMARTINS
As the name suggests, a tribute to the music of The Beautiful South and
The Housemartins, both of Hull's finest. And what a good band, too - we've
heard the stuff. Complete with excellent female singer, all the
arrangements and the feel are intact. Here's what Times journo Mike
Pattenden had to say, "You're nobody in the '90s music scene unless you
have your own tribute band, and tonight the Beautiful South have come down
to Putney's Half Moon to meet the group that pays homage to them. They
play versions of both Hull bands' songs, something The Beautiful South
flatly refused to do with The Housemartins' material. The harmonies are
tight, the voices blend together nicely and the crowd applaud. Paul
Heaton, stood at the bar, applauds loudest of all. The Beautiful
Southmartins are good value, and their counterparts find it hilarious (and
flattering) that anyone else should bother performing their songs." The
band has an enormous repertoire from both acts including Old Red Eyes is
Back, A Little Time, Perfect 10, Don't Marry Her, Rotterdam, Let Love
Speak Up Itself, You Keep It All In and I'll Sail This Ship Alone from The
Beautiful South. Old Housemartin faves Caravan Of Love, Happy Hour and
People Get Ready are there as well as lots of other material. In fact, as
this is being written we're reminded again just how much quality material
Paul Heaton is responsible for.
MARCH AT FIBBERS

Thu 22 - DAVE SWARBRICK AND MARTIN CARTHY
Londoner Dave Swarbrick has had a lifelong passion for folk music and was
working and recording with legends such as EWAN MacCOLL, PEGGY SEEGER and
CHARLES PARKER even from his early printing apprenticeship days. He joined
the IAN CAMPBELL FOLK GROUP in the early 60's and, in 1966, teamed up with
MARTIN CARTHY and this remarkable pairing played an important part in the
tremendous shake- up of British folk at that time. When they parted in
1969 Dave joined FAIRPORT CONVENTION and his contribution to folk and
folk/rock music is legendary and well documented. In 1984 Dave left
Fairport and, along with KEVIN DEMPSEY, CHRIS LESLIE and MARTIN JENKINS,
formed WHIPPERSNAPPER, a group renowned for its drive and acoustic
prowess, but left in 1989 to concentrate on solo work and revive his
partnership with Martin Carthy. In the early 90s Dave and Martin were
members of the folk "supergroup" BAND OF HOPE along with such luminaries
as ROY BAILEY, STEAFAN HANNIGAN, JOHN KIRKPATRICK and CHRIS PARKINSON. In
1993 Dave moved to the Australian Blue Mountains and began working with
ALISTAIR HULETT, producing the highly acclaimed "SATURDAY JOHNNY and JIMMY
THE RAT" and "THE COLD GREY LIGHT OF DAWN".
THE BLUES BAR
We're always open all day and night for the best laid-back atmosphere in
town and this is the area's original and longest established non-formula
Amsterdam-style (without the "other" menu!) cafe bar. If you're taking a
trip to The Blues for the first time, head down the main road in to the
town centre (with The Stray on your left) and turn left opposite The
Cenotaph but BEFORE the pedestrian crossing! "Bettys" is on this corner,
as well. The funkiest, coolest little bar around. Look out for the return
of "GOTCHA", the "BLUES BAR OLYMPICS" and the infamous "CRICKET CLUB
ANNUAL DINNER AND DANCE" … Simon, you have a lot to answer for ….
Blues Bar residencies include:
LIVE MUSIC EVERY SUNDAY AFTERNOON
A variety of performers, electric or acoustic, starting about 1pm.
JAZZITUDE EVERY MONDAY NIGHT
Now a weekly residency, you can expect a subtle blend of delicious jazz
flavours old and new mixed with a dash of hip-hop, drum'n'bass and dub.
"Jazzitude" is a creature endeavour of musicians with free-style rapper
DJs and horn players and a relaxed, chilled night that will leave you
fulfilled with vibes". Charm magazine has this to say, "One of the most
aurally pleasing things I have ever heard".
THE PAUL MIDDLETON BAND EVERY THURSDAY NIGHT
Rootsy, down-to-earth blues from some of the best players in the area.
This every-Thursday residency started as an informal jam and has grown in
to one of the best examples of local practitioners of the blues and r'n'b
showing how it's really done - from the soul. Fibbers-goers might have
caught 'em with Gwyn Ashton and Wilko Johnson - excellent.

Sun 26 - DAVID ESSEX
David started singing and playing drums semi-professionally with The
Everons in East End pubs, but it wasn't until 1971 when he played Jesus in
"Godspell" that his career began taking shape. After his portrayal of Jim
Maclaine in Top Ten box office success "That'll Be The Day" which won him
the Variety Club "Most Promising Newcomer of the Year' award, David
collaborated with Jeff Wayne to record "Rock On" a UK and USA No 1. "Gonna
Make You A Star" and "Hold Me Close" quickly followed. West Ham and
cricket fanatic David next starred in "Stardust" in 1974, returning to the
West End in 1978 to play Che Guevara in "Evita". He wrote the music for an
starred in "Silver Dream Racer" and hosted his own BBC TV series, "The
David Essex Showcase". Not just a pretty face (!), David's next project,
the musical "Mutiny!" with Frank Finlay ran for 16 months and was
nominated for "Best Musical' in the Ivor Novello awards. Meanwhile, Tim
Rice and Mike Batt wrote "A Winter's Tale" especially for him and it shot
up to No 2. Since the early nineties, David has staged his own Christmas
musical version of "Robinson Crusoe" around the country to great success
and was invited by Sir Peter Hall to work with Donald Sinden in the
classic "She Stoops To Conquer", worked on ballet scores and continued
working abroad in volunteer music and drama projects. So much more than a
teen idol ….

Sat 28 - CAPERCAILLIE
Capercaillie is the leading torchbearer for an innovative Celtic music
hybrid that integrates Scottish traditional styles with sleek contemporary
ambient, dance, and pop elements--bringing the music well beyond its
customary folkie boundaries. Beautiful Wasteland is constructed largely
from Gaelic "mouth music" tunes sung gorgeously by Karen Matheson and
arranged with submarine musical depths by Manus Lunny. There are showers
of synthesisers to colour the fiddle and bouzouki textures, but the synths
never take precedence simply because so much is going on. Capercaillie
rivets their tunes with solid beats and then populates the sound field
with ambient vibrations and a catalogue of acoustic instruments. In
addition, North African vocal duo Sibeba collaborates on two tracks,
adding a vocal dimension that further extends Beautiful Wasteland's
unassuming, profound international multiculturalism. --Andrew Bartlett

Thu 02 - PAUL BRADY
With ten highly-acclaimed albums under his belt and his songs sung by Tina
Turner, Phil Collins, Bonnie Raitt, Mary Black, Paul Young, Art Garfunkel
and Cher, Paul Brady currently ranks as one of the most influential and
successful Irish artists. Born and raised in Strabane, Northern Ireland,
Brady's early influences were a heady mixture of the swing music and jazz
of his parents' generation and the rock, pop, R&B and country and western
of his own era, all of which was set against a backdrop of Irish folk
music and song. Songs like "Helpless Heart", "Paradise Is Here" and "Steel
Claw" (the latter two both covered by Tina Turner) cemented Brady's
reputation as a major songwriter. Recently Paul has been writing,
co-writing, performing and preparing material for his debut album for
Rykodisc.

Fri 03 - MAXIMUM RHYTHM 'N' BLUES 2000
With The Manfreds - Paul Jones, Mike D'Abo, Tom McGuinness, Mike Vickers
and Mike Hugg with Rob Townsend and Marcus Cliffe. Also special guests
Chris Farlowe, Alan Price and Cliff Bennett! Following the critically
acclaimed 1999 tour and due to public demand, Maximum Rhythm 'n' Blues is
back, once again boasting some of the finest blues and r'n'b talent ever
assembled on the same stage. These artists learned their craft by playing
the exciting London club circuit in such famous clubs of the time as "The
Flamingo", "Klooks Kleeks", "Ricky Ticks", "Eel Pie Island", "Ronnie
Scotts" and "The 101 Club" creating the birth of British Rhythm & Blues.
The tour reunites the original Manfred Mann members. It is over three
decades since Manfred Mann stopped playing but, after a successful reunion
in 1991, the band injects all of the enthusiasm back into their classics
"Do Wah Diddy Diddy", "5-4-3-2-1" and "Mighty Quinn". Chris Farlowe
fronted legendary 60s R&B band The Thunderbirds but is best known for his
chart topper "Out of Time". Alan Price, initially a member of The Animals,
had huge solo hits in the 60s with "I Put A Spell On You" and "The House
That Jack Built". Cliff Bennett, originally of Cliff Bennett and the Rebel
Rousers had top ten hits with "One Way Love" and "Got To Get You Into My
Life". These pioneers of the ground-breaking Rhythm N Blues scene perform
a show that features The Manfreds on stage throughout the show introducing
all their classic hits and those of their special guests. An evening of
quality musicianship, innovation and all the hits to match!
Sat 04 - JOHANN STRAUSS CAPELLE
The first "Original Wiener Strauss Capelle" was founded in 1824 by father
Johann Strauss. In 1977 the Wiener Strauss Capelle was founded again to
bring new life to the tradition of the Viennese waltzes. Selected
musicians from the best known Vienna orchestras enabled the concert agency
IMaGE to create unique performances of the works of father Strauss and his
sons - in authentic orchestra and historical costumes, using
reconstructions of the destroyed original scores. The orchestra has
already been acclaimed all around the world - from USA to Japan, from
Canada to Spain and the concert offers a selection of the most famous
waltzes and polkas of the Strauss dynasty to the heartily applauded "Blue
Danube". These beautiful Viennese melodies are impressively interpreted by
dancers of the Association "Ballett der Wiener Volksoper" and one soprano.

The Hollies - as you’ve never heard them before. Carl Wayne (ex lead
singer of “The Move”) joins the familiar line-up of Tony Hicks, Bobby
Elliott, Alan Coates, Ray Stiles and Ian Parker in their dazzling new
show, adding a dynamic new dimension to that trademark Hollies’ sound.
Allan Clarke retired from the band at the end of last year for personal
reasons but the Hollies assure their fans they will continue to entertain
for many years to come. The year 2000 marks a fresh beginning for the band
with brand new songs and of course the classics (He Ain’t Heavy He’s My
Brother; I’m Alive; Just One Look). Two hours of musical genius on stage
(no fillers and no special guests) - just Hollies plugged and unplugged;
raw power and wistful harmonies; ballads and hard-edged rock - however the
mood takes them. Plus their own self-deprecating wit and anecdotes from
their four decades of life in music.

Fri 24 - THE ALL AMERICAN SOLID GOLD ROCK 'N' ROLL SHOW
Featuring Bobby Vee, Johnny Tillotson, Brian Hyland, Little Eva and, for
the first time in the UK in 30 years, Freddy Cannon - all accompanied by
The Vees, together in concert. A 15-yr-old Bobby Vee and hastily-formed
band famously stood in for Buddy Holly, The Big Bopper and Ritchie Valens,
missing that snowy February evening in 1959 and went on to record Devil or
Angel, Rubber Ball and The Night Has A Thousand Eyes. Little "Locomotion"
Eva was discovered by Carole King and Gerry Goffin when they hired her as
a babysitter and Freddy "Boom-Boom" Cannon's discography includes
Palisades Park, Way Down Yonder In New Orleans and Tallahassee Lassie.
Brian Hyland recorded many hits, the most popularly-played of which are
Itsy Bitsy Teenie Weenie Yellow Polka Dot Bikini, Gypsy Woman, and, of
course, Sealed With A Kiss. Johnny Tillotson first love was country but
had a dozen Top 40 hits including Poetry In Motion, It Keeps Right On
A-Hurtin' and Heartaches By The Number. A sensational 50/60s Gold Show!

Thu 30 - RUSSELL WATSON
Russell Watson is about to become a household name. Billed as the greatest
thing since sliced bread (Hovis, mind – he is a proper Northern Boy),
“Salford’s answer to Pavarotti” has everything necessary to become one of
the biggest classical superstars ever - handsome, personable, charming,
and the owner of one of the biggest English tenor voices ever. Debut
album, The Voice, is certain to top the classical charts and must surely
leave Andrea Bocelli quaking in his boots. His singing career started in
the pubs and working men’s club of the industrial North-West of England,
but a love of classical music drove him to break away from the Michael
Bolton and Meatloaf covers and set his sights on a singing career with an
operatic twist. In 1999 he sang to 92,000 spectators at the Nou Camp
stadium in Barcelona before the European Cup Final, and he also sang
before every England game in the recent Rugby Union World Cup finals. It
is a meteoric rise for the man who admits that if somebody had told him a
few years ago he’d be singing opera he’d have replied “No way, get out of
it!” but the fame is by no means undeserved. His voice is remarkably
full-bodied for a singer of his age and his innate musicianship is
abundantly clear. The repertoire on the new disc constitutes a pleasantly
eclectic mix: ‘Barcelona’, with Shaun Ryder (originally a hit for Freddy
Mercury and Montserrat Caballe), sits quite comfortably next to ‘La Donna
e Mobile’ from Verdi’s ‘Rigoletto’ and of course the tour de force ‘Nessun
Dorma’ from Puccini’s ‘Turandot’. The arrangements and production,
courtesy of Nick Patrick, are slick, but nonetheless tasteful. Whatever
‘it’ is, Russell Watson has 'it', and one thing’s for sure: it’s going to
sell by t’bucketload!

DECEMBER AT YORK BARBICAN CENTRE
Fri 01 - IAN MOOR
New singing sensation Ian Moor first hit the spotlight when he won the
1999 "Stars In Their Eyes" Final and a record 500,000 people cast their
telephone votes in his favour after watching his brilliant performance as
Chris De Burgh. The song he sang that night was "Lady in Red" and such was
his popularity that he was invited back to perform that same song again at
the final this year, alongside his hero Chris De Burgh. Since then, Ian
has moved on to even bigger things and is set to become a star in his own
right, signing with a major international record label and releasing his
first album this autumn to coincide with a national UK tour. Ian is also
the subject of a TV documentary, which is charting his progress on the
road to stardom. In a full two-hour show and supported by first class
backing band and singers, Ian will be singing songs from his fantastic new
album, as well as other classic hits, including that timeless Chris De
Burgh song which shot him to fame.
Wed 06 - JOOLS HOLLAND RHYTHM AND BLUES ORCHESTRA + Cosmic Harmony with
Chris Holland
Born 1958, Julian Miles Holland joined Squeeze at the tender age of
fifteen and went on to TV presenting (The Tube/Juke Box Jury/The
Happening/Later...with Jools Holland/Name That Tune) and starring (Walking
to New Orleans/Mister Roadrunner/The Groovey Fellers/Rebellious Jukebox)
where he has deservedly gained a "man of the people" reputation. The list
of his guest appearances reads like a musical Who's Who from George
Harrison to Fun Lovin' Criminals, Garth Brooks to Stereophonics and
keyboard-based legends like Dr John, Leon Russell and Rico Rodriguez. On
Desert Island Discs, he revealed a passion for Architecture and a diverse
musical base which included a choral piece by Elgar a
