JUNE

Mon 25 - ANUBIA + Lux Perpetua + LaFours + R505
Amnesty International gig to help the York Group fund protests against
recent incidents around the world.

Tue 26 - DEAD MEN WALKING
Mike Peters (The Alarm), Pete Wylie (Mighty Wah), Kirk Brandon (Spear of
Destiny) and Glen Matlock (Sex Pistols) all on the same stage solo and
together – for three hours! FOR THE BENEFIT OF PERFORMERS AND AUDIENCE AT
ACOUSTIC SHOWS, PLEASE NOTE THAT PEOPLE PERSISTENTLY TALKING LOUDLY AND,
IN THE OPINION OF THE VENUE STAFF, DISRUPTING THE ENJOYMENT OF OTHERS,
WILL BE REQUESTED TO LEAVE THE VENUE WITHOUT REFUND. (£10 advance -
tickets available from www.fibbers.co.uk, 01904 466149 or the venue)

Wed 27 - BATTLE OF THE BANDS SEMI-FINAL with 5'4 + Beyond Redemption +
Heroic Trio
Full-on "spazzy punk to disco routine", "post-death metal" and "darkly
sexual penetrative tones". £3.50 on the door, audience voting.

Thu 28 - OSIRIS + Ham
SORRY, JANUS STARK TOUR CANCELLED DUE TO EXPLODING DRUMMER. Tickets valid
for rescheduled show (apologies once again, we don't know when that will
be) or refunds available from point of purchase. The excellent Osiris and
Ham will still be appearing.

Fri 29 - TUNG
Described by Kerrang! as "The Beastie Boys if they’d grown up with a
passion for heavy metal, instead of hardcore punk". Sirens wail, beats are
beefy and the riffs are fat - or should that be PHAT! Regularly featured
in Metal Hammer and leading trade mag Making Music, this samples and
technology-infused rap-metal act has also appeared twice on terrestrial TV
as well as supports to The Bloodhound Gang, Terrorvision, Sona Fariq and
One Minute Silence to name but a few.

Sat 30 - FOUR STAR MARY + Farrah + Breathe
Probably the most-heard unheard-of band ever. You've already heard 'em as
Buffy The Vampire Slayer character Oz's favourite band Dingoes Ate My Baby
(we prefer Godzilla Drank My Tizer or Michael Schumacker Wet My Bed) as
well as Party of Five and MTV's Real World using their material as well.
Hailing from LA and named after a fortune cookie, FSM's power-pop / rock
has already earned them a massive US reputation. (£4.50 advance - tickets
available from www.fibbers.co.uk, 01904 466149 or the venue)

JULY

Mon 02 - THE SOMATICS (EX-ULTRASOUND) + Six Ray Sun + Superfly
An original member of uncompromising Newcastle indie art-rock band Sleepy
People, dandy-in-a-suit Richard Green went on to form Ultrasound with
co-members Tiny (vocals) and drummer Andy Peace. Joined here in The
Somatics with yet more ex-Sleepys Liz Wardby (keyboards) and Kerry
Harrison (drums), life after Ultrasound was always going to be difficult
as they promised everything - a monumental full stop in rock history -
before ego clashes and internal politics destroyed them. The material has
a wonderfully hypnotic yet bloody-minded feel but with a lightweight
sparkle. (£3 advance - tickets available from www.fibbers.co.uk, 01904
466149 or the venue)

Tue 03 - RAT SALAD - A TRIBUTE TO BLACK SABBATH + Pig Iron
Heavy Metal eh? You could argue all day over who invented it, but most
discussions will include that legendary Brummy four-piece Black Sabbath.
They were probably more directly responsible for "Death Metal" but,
nevertheless, Tony Iommi, Geezer Butler, Ozzy Osbourne and Bill Ward had a
talent for complex, enthralling riffs and, yes, original and catchy
melodies. (£4 advance - tickets available from www.fibbers.co.uk 01904
466149 or the venue)

Wed 04 - BATTLE OF THE BANDS with The T&B Specialists + The Frame + Super
8
A "blend of sex kitten funk and psychedelic trash", "epic rock/pop with
hints of The Cranberries and Hole" and "blustery Charlatans crossed with
James Brown - all forced through the Limp Bizkit shredder." (£3.50 on the
door, audience voting)

Thu 05 - THE GROUNDHOGS + The Leon Banks Blues Band
Formed 1964 by Tony McPhee and Pete Cruikshank as "John Lee's Groundhogs"
to back John Lee Hooker on a British tour, they swam with the tide of
heavy progressive rock. Beginning with 1970's "Thank Christ For The Bomb"
they chalked up three Top Ten albums. “Split” sold over 150000 copies and
a single from the album “Cherry Red” was featured on TOTP. A man true to
his blues roots but still with fire in his belly! (£6 advance - tickets
available from www.fibbers.co.uk 01904 466149 or the venue)

Fri 06 - BLUERYDER + Mother Sugar
Laid back and intense with a quirky introverted blend of dEUS, Blur and
Nick Drake; their hypnotic Spiritualised-type bass and heavy driving drums
underpin a mad hybrid of Talking Heads and Radiohead. A recent Leeds
review said, "I like guitar stuff. I wasn't disappointed as their
guitarist uses a plethora of effects, not least of which includes using an
electric drill against the strings...."

Sat 07 - SACK TRICK + Anubia
Formed around Bruce Dickinson bassist Chris Dale, the constantly
refreshing line-up features various members of bands such as Rachel Stamp,
Kill ll This, Robbie Williams Band, The Wildhearts, Ritchie Blackmore's
Rainbow, AntiProduct and The Almighty, to name but a few. They are a
mayhem version of heavy metal, rock and theatrical comedy, irreverent and
get-yer-rocks-off as only experienced musicians can be. (£4 advance -
tickets available from www.fibbers.co.uk, 01904 466149 or the venue)

Sun 08 - 5' 4 + Herrod + Lux Perpetua
Based in Leeds/York, this is one hard-gigging, full-on "spazzy punk to
disco routine" act blasting catchy tunes and "choruses that drill right
into your head and take root". Recent supports with Doves, Goldblade and
Les Carter's Abdoujaparov revealed their passion and energy for punk-pop.

Mon 09 - THE BUSINESS + Wa$ter
Growing from London, the early 80's Oi! explosion was a rebellion against
the steady sell-out of punk. Mostly dealing with the highly political
topics of working class exploitation ("Employer's Black List"), unity
("The Real Enemy") and racism ("Spirit of the Streets"), this prolific and
seminal South London act have spent time on Taang! Records, a label based
in Boston which also has Slapshot, Stiff Little Fingers and Anti- Heroes.
New album "No Mercy", on Swedish hardcore label Burning Heart sees a
return to their original sound. Two tracks ("Take Us And Use Us" and "The
Whole Truth") are featured on an up-and-coming British gangster film due
to premiere at Cannes. Along with the likes of Exploited, Cockney Rejects,
Angelic Upstarts, Blitz and GBH, The Business were there at the beginning.
(£6 advance - tickets available from www.fibbers.co.uk, 01904 466149 or
the venue)

Tue 10 - THE FRAMES + Four Day Hombre + The Lo Beams
Enter the noisy sounds of stripped-down Americana (Pavement and The
Pixies) with just a touch of folk (The Waterboys and Nick Drake). Enter a
world of intense imagery and performance driven alternately by a wheezing
squeezebox and grating guitars. Stopping along the way to feature as
Outspan in Alan Parker's The Commitments, Glenn Hansard fronts a band that
effortlessly stops stone dead in a mid-feedback squall to draw out
delicious falsetto harmonies leaving the listener breathless. This is
musicianship and invention of the highest quality; cross contamination of
a style and substance attempted but never conquered quite like this. Come
to this gig. PLEASE come to this gig and witness self-effacing masters at
work. Recommended! (£5 advance - tickets available from
www.fibbers.co.uk, 01904 466149 or the venue)

Wed 11 - BATTLE OF THE BANDS with Planet Lounge + Parisman + 5 Leaves Left
"A combination of cheesy TV theme tunes and …Cud", "Prodigy, Beta Band,
Mansun and New Order or just The Doors meeting Moby - Parisman are one
super-tight and powerful act" and "an interesting mix of indie, early 90s
guitar-baggy and rock". £3.50 on the door, audience voting.

Thu 12 - EDDIE & THE HOT RODS
One of the leading bands in the "Pub Rock" boom prior to Punk. They even
outsold The Stones at The Paris Olympia, appeared on Top Of The Pops and
broke the house record at The Marquee Club in London, playing five nights
in a row. At a memorable gig at The Marquee The Sex Pistols played their
first "proper" gig as the support to The Hot Rods and proceeded to trash
the stage and were promptly thrown off the tour. In 1977, "Do Anything You
Wanna Do" secured their biggest hit (No 9) along with TV (The Old Grey
Whistle Test), a sell-out UK tour with Squeeze and a European tour with
The Ramones and Talking Heads as support. (£6 advance - tickets available
from www.fibbers.co.uk, 01904 466149 or the venue)

Fri 13 - AN INTIMATE EVENING WITH FRANCIS DUNNERY
Founder member of It Bites, now a solo singer-songwriter with a gruff,
honest approach to song craft occasionally recalling Neil Young. His 1994
Atlantic debut (Fearless) was a critical success and he toured with Robert
Plant as his guitarist, releasing a live album One Night In Sauchiehall
Street the following year. Always a lyrical genius and crafter of
exquisitely lush songs with more panoramic vision than a view from the
average Alpine peak, the cruel bitter-sweet songs driven by Dunnery's
genius-like power-play guitar such as Underneath Your Pillow, Still Too
Young To Remember and Kiss Like Judas will live forever. Recommended. (£10
advance - tickets available from www.fibbers.co.uk, 01904 466149 or the
venue)

Sat 14 - THE COUCH POTATOES CD LAUNCH
marking the release of debut CD "Coming Soon" on July 9, Their game is
melodic pop that hints at Crowded House and Prefab Sprout - great songs
with good melodies and words you can actually hear.

Sun 15 - HAYLEY HUTCHINSON + Bill Mallonee (Vigilantes of Love) + Stuart
Jones
One of York’s most talented emerging singer-songwriters, earning rave
reviews after releasing the beautiful and disarming EP ‘Halo’, which has
been played on The Bob Harris Show. Her recent London debut at The
Kashmir Club attracted considerable industry interest including a summons
to one company the very next day. Ably supporting the likes of Kathryn
Williams her unique and original voice, sometimes vulnerable, personal and
intimate; at other times powerful and soaring; has been likened to Harriet
Wheeler of The Sundays, Tori Amos and Alison Krauss. And here's a bonus -
Vigilantes of Love main man Bill Mallonee is in town and has asked if,
once more, he can do a set at Fibbers! The poetry and intelligence of
Bill's material rivals Dylan, Bob Harris raves about the enormous effect
that appearances have on his programme and Rolling Stone and Billboard are
huge fans. 1999 album Audible Sigh was an alt-country landmark and topped
many "Best of" lists - can you really afford to miss this gig, now? FOR
THE BENEFIT OF PERFORMERS AND AUDIENCE AT ACOUSTIC SHOWS, PLEASE NOTE THAT
PEOPLE PERSISTENTLY TALKING LOUDLY AND, IN THE OPINION OF THE VENUE STAFF,
DISRUPTING THE ENJOYMENT OF OTHERS, WILL BE REQUESTED TO LEAVE THE VENUE
WITHOUT REFUND.

Mon 16 - TERRIS
"The brightest hopes we've witnessed in years"- NME "ON". Sounding like a
21st century Joy Division fronted by a young and totally wired Tom Waits,
the first time you hear these Newport estate brats you'll wonder what the
awful racket is. The second time, the songs seep in. An electroid pulse,
crashing drums, charred guitars, and the tenderest, tuffest vocal snarl
from slight, blond, rag doll of a singer. Their slab of noise is Tom
Waits, Chilli Peppers and Leonard Cohen. And that's just for starters.
This date rescheduled from postponed gig with Clearlake. (£4 on the door)

Tue 17 - KANGAROO MOON
Weaving world, rock, folk and dance with acoustic and electronic
influences into a funky, psychedelic wall of sound; since their inception
in 1988 Kangaroo Moon have played and danced their way in to the hearts of
festival goers and music loves everywhere. (£4 advance - tickets
available from www.fibbers.co.uk, 01904 466149 or the venue)

Thu 19 - OCCUPATIONAL HAZARD + fAKE
Voted by Kerrang! readers as one of the Top 3 Hottest Unsigned Bands,
their live shows combine mind-blowing interactive computer visuals and
lighting with high-energy performance. Influenced by Pitchshifter,
Clawfinger, Rammstein to Fear Factory and Nailbomb and all INCREDIBLY
YOUNG (around the 16yrs mark!), this Midlands cyber-metal crew combines
the electronic breakbeats of industrial with hardcore ready-to-go mosh.
They've already toured with Pist.on, Kill 2 This, Rachel Stamp, Lost
Prophets, Earthtone 9, Queen Adreena and Misery Loves Company. Stand well
back. (£4 advance - tickets available from www.fibbers.co.uk, 01904 466149
or the venue)

Fri 20 - INERTIA CRISIS + Ham + Flint
Vocal acrobatics with brash guitars against a backdrop of sledgehammer
rhythms, Inertia Crisis are putting a bit of drama back in, pal. Muse and
Nirvana spring to mind. This explosive trio of a traditional punk, a mod
in to emo and a death metal Megadeth freak bring power and melody to their
defiantly mind-boggling melodic racket.

Sat 21 - COGNAC + Heavy Air
Undoubtedly one of the best bands York has ever produced and certainly
capable of going the whole way until their untimely implosion. You wanna
label? "New York Dolls meets Super Furry Animals/Daft Punk/Primal Scream
- make of that what you will…"

Sun 22 - DIAMOND HEAD UNPLUGGED
Formed '78 and soon opening for the likes of AC/DC and Iron Maiden,
Diamond Head typified the 80s new wave of Brit heavy metal along with
Saxon and Judas Priest. Classic tracks Sucking My Love, In The Heat Of
The Night brought huge success as favourites of Tommy Vance. Touring
large venues like Manchester Apollo and Hammersmith Odeon cemented their
status as the band Metallica would name-check as a major influence,
eventually jamming "Helpless" and "Am I Evil" on stage with Lars & Co at
Birmingham NEC. Brian, Sean & Floyd take you through those glorious years
with material old and new. (£4 advance - tickets available from
www.fibbers.co.uk , 01904 466149 or the venue)

Mon 23 - BUDDY MONDLOCK
Best known as a writer - his songs have shown up on albums by Garth
Brooks, Joan Baez, Nanci Griffith, Janis Ian and Peter Paul & Mary - he's
becoming increasingly well known as a performer and even Bob Harris
featured him live from Nashville as well as on Richard Allinson and BBC
London Live. Nanci Griffith fans will know, of course, that she recorded
Mondlock's song 'Comin' Down In The Rain' on her Grammy award-winning
album, 'Other Voices, Other Rooms'. Already working on a new project with
Art Garfunkel, Buddy is excited about his latest album "Poetic Justice"
already Radio 2 playlisted, which he says, "… has much more of a live
feel, and I also got to work with a string-quartet which has always been
one of my dreams." and includes guest artists such as early co-conspirator
Guy Clark, Nanci Griffith, Ellis Paul, Darrell Scott and Susan Ashton.
(£4.50 advance - tickets available from www.fibbers.co.uk, 01904 466149 or
the venue)

Tue 24 - HAM + Sevenball
Local 5-piece with a mixture of styles ranging from the aggressive/heavy
to the melodic/catchy. Their influences include Sunk Loto, Powderfinger,
Muse, Bush but mainly Silverchair whose songs they often covered before
progressing to originals performed with energy and enthusiasm.

Fri 27 - WHOLE LOTTA LED
Formed in 1993, Whole Lotta Led are quick to say that they are not a
look-a-like band, but they are definitely a sound-a-like band. You'll get
the whole range of Led Zeppelin music in a two hour show including such
classics as Over the Hills And Far Away, Black Dog and Whole Lotta Love;
moody 12-bars and the kind of rockers that had the head bangers in full
hair-flying mode back in the Seventies. This band is up there with the
great tribute acts of the UK. (£5.50 advance - tickets available from
www.fibbers.co.uk, 01904 466149 or the venue)

Sun 29 - MEDULLA NOCTE + Underrule + Act of Violence
Paul Catten, the leader of the ultra-heavy, howling Hereford maulers
Medulla Nocte, has a reputation as a truly deranged frontman. What else
from an ex-psychiatric inmate who threatens suicide if the band splits?
Formed '92 and raised on Slayer, Faith No More, hardcore and underground
metal; touted as successors to Black Flag, MD have now realised their
ambition to be "the most brutally intense band on the planet and if we
scare someone, that's a bonus". (£5 advance - tickets available from
www.fibbers.co.uk, 01904 466149 or the venue)

AUGUST

Thu 02 - MOISE AND ALIDA VIATOR'S "EH - LA BAS!"
Sensational teenage Cajun tearaways Moise (19) and Alida (16) Viato bring
their 8-piece New Orleans Creole Jazz band to Fibbs straight after a
Montreal Jazz Festival show. With a full brass section featuring Dr
John's trombonist, Scotty "T Bone" Hill (Jazz Hall of Fame / Ella
Fitzgerald / Louis Jordan / Danny Barker / James Booker / Dr. John …..
phew!) and a veritable who's who of Louisiana musicians, expect anything
from down-homey duets from Moise (19) on guitar and Alida (16) on fiddle
through to generous helpings of Creole Jazz and Caribbean Calypso, with an
impressive repertoire of traditional Cajun and contemporary Zydeco in
between. Also amongst this incredible band are Joseph Torregano
(clarinet/sax), Michael Burtchaell (trumpet/keys), Robert Snow (bass) and
Kevin Estoque (drums) who, between them, have played with Harry Connick
Jnr, Buddy Rich, Lionel Hampton, Pearl Bailey, Tony Bennett, Al Hirt and
lots more. (£7 advance - tickets available from www.fibbers.co.uk, 01904
466149 or the venue)

Wed 08 - THE PEACOCKS + Lightyear
Punk, psychobilly, ska, surf, sixties, pop and western; never too hard,
always really quick, incredibly powerful and explosive. Think of the
infamous King Kurt joining forces with The Meteors with a Stray Cats
(remember them?!. (£4 advance - tickets available from www.fibbers.co.uk,
01904 466149 or the venue)

Fri 10 - THE BEAUTIFUL SOUTHMARTINS
As the name suggests, a tribute to the music of The Beautiful South and
The Housemartins. And what a good band, too - we've heard the stuff.
Complete with excellent female singer, all the arrangements and the feel
are intact with an enormous repertoire including Old Red Eyes is Back, A
Little Time, Perfect 10, Don't Marry Her, Rotterdam, Let Love Speak Up
Itself, You Keep It All In and I'll Sail This Ship Alone from The
Beautiful South. Old Housemartin faves Caravan Of Love, Happy Hour and
People Get Ready are there as well. (£5.50 advance - tickets available
from www.fibbers.co.uk, 01904 466149 or the venue)

Sun 19 - I CAN'T BELIEVE IT'S NOT PUNK + History Will Call Us + Flint
OK, you won't believe this Manchester-based band. Imagine "Now That's
What I Call Punk" and then do it live with all the attitude and all the
musicianship and ... well, everything. It's so rare that we get really
excited about a "tribute" act but this one is just excellent. Pistols /
Damned / The Only Ones / / Boomtown Rats / Buzzcocks / etc etc.... (£4 on
the door).

Fri 24 - ACAYSHA
Bound together by bluegrass, old-time and Irish folk music featuring the
Carlos sisters Mexeena (vocals, fiddle, mandolin) and Janette (banjo,
bodhran, rhythm guitar). With Cambridge, Glastonbury, Edale and Beverley
festivals already under their belts this ambitious all female, 4-piece
outfit provides audiences worldwide with a deliciously, unique sound. And
the last word to their producer, the legendary pedal-steel player BJ Cole,
"Some of the most interesting and original music I've heard in a long
time". (£5.50 advance - tickets available from www.fibbers.co.uk, 01904
466149 or the venue)

Sun 26 - BLYTH POWER + Mad Dogs and Englishmen
Variously described as 'a cross between Steeleye Span, The Rubettes and
The Clash', BP defy categorization. Folk, punk, jazz and heavy metal -
not even country and western can be discounted. Or as another learned
organ was so indiscreet as to say 'Blyth Power in full cry make The
Levellers (who famously quote BP as a founding influence) sound like Peter
Paul and Mary.' Support act MD&E includes members of ranting lads The
Whiskey Priests. (£4 advance - tickets available from www.fibbers.co.uk,
01904 466149 or the venue)

Fri 31 - THE GREEN + DJ
Long-time devotees of Fibbers will recall familiar faces Al Murphy and Ed
Shipley when, as The Clangers, they supported both The Lightning Seeds and
The Rye here. A 6-piece comprising viola, harmonica, bass and percussion
with four vocals this is a precision and very modern folk-roots-rock act
playing with funk and flair - but without the wispy beards and corduroy
jackets …

SEPTEMBER

Mon 03 - CAPDOWN + Flint + fAKE
Their fresh skacore punk got them gigs with Link 80, Goober Patrol, and
King Prawn and Caffeine as well as being taken under the wing of ex-Judas
Priest manager Dave Holland. The name changed (CAPitalist DOWNfall) and
with the release of "Excellent" and even more gigs with the likes of The
Damned, MU330, Lunachicks and Consumed, the stage is now set for world
domination by this defiantly British hardcore politico-skapunk act. (£4
advance - tickets available from www.fibbers.co.uk, 01904 466149 or the
venue)

Sat 08 - MATRIX + Bronze + Weeve + Afference
Have been described as The Spencer Davis Group meets The Who via The Verve
and their new stuff has a Levellers feel to it! Very definitely a sixties
sound with a strong indie connection. Chuck in a bit of funk and you've
got Matrix.

Mon 24 - ELECTRIC FRANKENSTEIN + Starkitten
Seamlessly welded garage, rockabilly and metal; sewed in grunge; malignant
brain of hardcore and bolted on glam-punk. Tormenting Egor with their
hook laden, memorable heavy rock and roll song writing since 1992, New
Jersey’s EF have been shaking their fists at the angry villagers' torch
processions with 60s-style Famous Monsters / Rat Fink type artwork and
vocalist Steve Miller’s gravel-gargle. Here is one loud Noo Yawk
rock’n’roll band - thundering bass and drums, pulsing backbeat, memorable
hooks and riffs. Featuring ex-members of Cathedral, Christian Death,
Holeshot, Fur and Crawlpappy they even coaxed R.I.P. punk legends Rik L
Rik and Joey Ramone out of the woodwork, the latter who was soon to be
guesting with them. (£5 advance - tickets available from
www.fibbers.co.uk, 01904 466149 or the venue)

Wed 26 - LUKE DANIELS "HISTORIES RHYME"
Fronted by Celtic button accordeon virtuoso Luke Daniels, here are six UK
performers reading like a who's who of contemporary, yet classically
trained, musicians from the field of jazz, folk and contemporary classical
music coming together in an explosive fusion of modern music. A truly
awesome line-up. The music draws on folk as well as classical and jazz
forms. Luke is joined by Alec Dankworth (double bass), Ben Castle
(clarinet/alto sax), Brian Abrahams (drums/percussion), Clive Carroll
(steel strung guitar) and John Paul Gandy (piano/keyboards). (£7.50
advance - tickets available from www.fibbers.co.uk, 01904 466149 or the
venue)

Sun 30 - HELLRIDE + The X-Rays
Scandinavian "rock gods" and pure rock'n'roll party monsters Hellride
(signed to White Jazz) are over here for just a few select dates. The
band recorded last year with Thomas Skogsberg (Entombed / Hellacopters /
Backyard Babies) producing a more melodic mid-tempo sound despite more
line-up changes than a Spinal Tap re-make. Final word to the band, "It's
about time that every rock 'n roller in every single damn country around
the whole damn planet get to know Hellride." Come on, this has GOT to be
worth a look! Swedish rock'n'roll punk!! (£4 advance - tickets available
from www.fibbers.co.uk, 01904 466149 or the venue)

OCTOBER

Sat 06 - ROSIE WILBY + Rebecca Hollweg
A Lancashire lass whose heroines included Tracy Chapman and Kate Bush,
Rosie was an early rebel against middle class ideals and made her way to
London to discover Tom Waits, Al Green, Portishead - and vocal harmonies
every Saturday at the Drill Hall …. Her music is expressive, romantic and
lyrical, honed over heavy gigging. The mainstream press is astonishing,
"Her mellifluous, melancholic music reminds you of Aimee Mann, Beth Orton
and Janis Ian … swoony tunes, honeyed vocals and a melancholy flavour of
lost love … acoustic pop with its soul based somewhere between Memphis and
Detroit … edges into Sarah Cracknell territory" and even the cynical music
hacks love her too, "Look out for Rosie Wilby " - Mojo, "Possessed of a
voice that is at once effective and memorable" - Rock'n'Reel, "A nice
gentle acoustic shimmer" - NME. FOR THE BENEFIT OF PERFORMERS AND
AUDIENCE AT ACOUSTIC SHOWS, PLEASE NOTE THAT PEOPLE PERSISTENTLY TALKING
LOUDLY AND, IN THE OPINION OF THE VENUE STAFF, DISRUPTING THE ENJOYMENT OF
OTHERS, WILL BE REQUESTED TO LEAVE THE VENUE WITHOUT REFUND. (£5.50
advance - tickets available from www.fibbers.co.uk, 01904 466149 or the
venue)

Thu 11 - TOM RUSSELL + Jim Almand
California-raised in the early 1950s, Tom listened to the West Coast
hillbilly sounds of Merle Travis, Joe Maphis, Tex Williams, The Collins
Kids and The Maddox Brothers and Rose. Having stolen his brother's Tijuana
gut-string guitar he set about Buck Owens, Wynn Stewart and Merle Haggard.
Between 1988 and 1995 he co-produced critically acclaimed records for Ian
and Sylvia Tyson, Katy Moffatt and soul singer Barrence Whitfield before
"Outbound Plane" won him an ASCAP Country Award as one of the most
performed radio songs of 1993 when the Suzy Bogguss' recording became a
top-ten hit. Tom's songs have also been recorded by Johnny Cash, Joe Ely,
Jerry Jeff Walker, Nanci Griffith, Dave Alvin, Janie Fricke, Peter Case
and the late Doug Sahm amongst others. A chance to catch a genuine USA
legend. FOR THE BENEFIT OF PERFORMERS AND AUDIENCE AT ACOUSTIC SHOWS,
PLEASE NOTE THAT PEOPLE PERSISTENTLY TALKING LOUDLY AND, IN THE OPINION OF
THE VENUE STAFF, DISRUPTING THE ENJOYMENT OF OTHERS, WILL BE REQUESTED TO
LEAVE THE VENUE WITHOUT REFUND. (£7 advance - tickets available from
www.fibbers.co.uk, 01904 466149 or the venue)

Fri 12 - POWERAGE - TRIBUTE TO ACDC, THE BON SCOTT ERA
"Hotter than the rolling dice, cooler than a body on ice, you're gonna
burn tonight." Hardly does one classic rock track finish when another one
takes its place. Riff Raff, Bad Boy Boogie, Problem Child, Hell Ain't A
Bad Place To Be, Whole Lotta Rosie, Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap, She's Got
The Jack - the list goes on. Founder member and singer, Sean, says, "We
just do the Bon Scott era. We are the AC/DC of 20 years ago 'cos
unfortunately AC/DC now just ain't AC/DC." We've heard so many good
reports about this act - recommended gig! (£5 advance - tickets available
from www.fibbers.co.uk, 01904 466149 or the venue)

Mon 15 - BEN & JASON
Alias, of course, Ben Parker and Jason Hazeley, two sensitive London souls
who first stuck their heads above the parapet with a support slot on
Elliott Smith's UK tour. Coming on like Thom Yorke fronting Wilco, they
are the latest melodic, slightly angsty country-tinged troubadours and
writers of fine, graceful, stick-in-the-head melodies. Ambitious Jeff
Buckley atmospherics (Nick Drake's arranger/manager, Robert Kirby, was
allegedly lured specially out of retirement) mix with summery 12-string
guitars and Hammonds holding notes that go on forever. Dramatic, swooping
string arrangements and syncopated percussion belie the dark intelligence
behind Ben & Jason's jolly tunefulness. "What Ben and I have in common,"
says Jason, "is a real passion for the starker, more acoustic songwriters
- people like Stina Nordenstant or Joni Mitchell". For an instant slice of
Ben & Jason, listen carefully to the Kronenbourg ad for 'Slip into
something' - a song they wrote with Kinobe. (£5.50 advance - tickets
available from www.fibbers.co.uk, 01904 466149 or the venue)

Wed 17 - CHAS 'N' DAVE
After Gertcha was snaffled by Courage for a beer campaign, it wasn't until
'81 that Top 10 success arrived with Rabbit which was followed by the
first of several gifts to their beloved Tottenham Hotspur, the Cup
Final-inspired Ossie's Dream. The following year it was only Bucks Fizz
that kept Ain't No Pleasing You off the Number 1 slot boosting the album
Mustn't Grumble with it’s shrink-wrapped addition Stars Over 45. The hits
just poured out - Margate, London Girls, My Melancholy Baby and, of
course, Snooker Loopy. Their success? 'We're like pie and mash", smiles
Dave, "Simple and very London, but if it's good stuff it travels". Leave
your street cred at the door, we won’t hold it against you 'cos quite
simply this is ENTERTAINMENT and that's what this entire lark is really
all about it - ain't it guv? (£10 advance - tickets available from
www.fibbers.co.uk, 01904 466149 or the venue)

Sat 20 - WILKO JOHNSON
The godfather of punk and co-founder of Dr Feelgood whose stripped-down
r'n'b and high-energy stage shows earned them critical acclaim with the
rock cognoscenti and the record buying public. Before his departure in
'77, the Feelgoods had released four classic albums including the No 1
"Stupidity". Briefly forming The Solid Senders, Wilks joined Ian Dury and
The Blockheads contributing to the "Laughter" album and a couple of
singles. Here is a British rock'n'roll and rhythm'n'blues guitar legend
up there with Peter Green and Mick Green (no relation) for all to see,
still doing the business live. Recommended at all cost! (£7 advance -
tickets available from www.fibbers.co.uk, 01904 466149 or the venue)

NOVEMBER

Thu 01 - KIKI DEE
In a three decade career including eight UK Top Forty hits, Kiki's
impeccable vocal abilities have covered all bases - from classic
interpretations of soul hits to masterful performances in major West End
musicals. As Bradford born Pauline Matthews (the name is a spin on Grease
character Sandra Dee) her early cover of Mitch Murray's "Early Night" led
her to become the first European artist to be signed to Tamla Motown but
it wasn't until joining Elton John's Rocket Records that success appeared.
'Amoureuse', 'I Got The Music In Me' and 'You Don’t Know How Glad I Am'
all had extended Top 20 chart stays but in '76 her duet with Elton, 'Don't
Go Breaking My Heart', topped the UK and US charts for what seemed all of
a long, hot summer. Other hits followed including 'Star' from 1981 before
the West End beckoned and she was nominated for a Laurence Olivier
Awardfor her role in Willy Rushton's Blood Brothers, as well as working
with Dave Stewart and, once more, duetting with Elton John on 'True Love'.
Still a stunner with a big Cheshire cat grin, recent collaborations with
Carmelo Luggeri, her former session guitarist, and a host of Indian
instrumentalists, have produced extraordinary and magical results,
lyrically akin to Joni Mitchell and k.d. lang. (£7 advance - tickets
available from www.fibbers.co.uk , 01904 466149 or the venue)

Sat 03 - DENNIS ROLLINS' BAD BONE & CO + The T&B Specialists
Trombone Player. Composer. Arranger. Producer. And … Britain's most
promising trombonist in the contemporary jazz/funk/fusion scene with
"wicked tunes bursting to be heard" (Jazz Express). Often compared to
James Brown's trombonist Fred Wesley, Dennis has played with and for just
about everybody including The Jazz Warriors, Courtney Pine, Jamiroquai,
George Clinton, Cypress Hill, Brand New Heavies (even Dionne Warwick and
Tom Jones) as well as TV appearances on Top of the Pops, Jools Holland and
TFI Friday. High energy, groove-based funky dance music with jazz
overtones and a genuine virtuoso player. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED! (£6.50
advance - tickets available from www.fibbers.co.uk , 01904 466149 or the
venue)

Thu 08 - SUE WILKINSON
The unforgettable sounds of Sue Wilkinson's earth-shaking vocals and
piano-pummelling riffs are Americana music at its finest. Pounding out
rocking, throbbing R&B, accompanied by vocals you feel from your feet up
she says, "It's unpretentious, devil-may-care, soul-rousing music. When
I'm singing and pounding the keys, ripping out the music I'm having a
total body experience. I love the physical and the emotional sensations.
I'm in the music and the music's in me." Think Macy Gray meets Ben Folds
Five with Aretha Franklin in the choir. No wonder then that she's already
opened for Pearl Jam, Red Hot Chilli Peppers, Ministry, The Indigo Girls,
Bob Weir from Grateful Dead, Michelle Shocked and Kansas. (£4 advance -
tickets available from www.fibbers.co.uk, 01904 466149 or the venue)

Sat 10 - THE ROLLIN STONED
"They are amazing, I thought it was my dad on stage" said Keith Richards'
daughter, Angela. Formed in 1998 by Counterfeit Stones co-founder Byron
Jones, Rollin Stoned, with their dedicated recreation of the heady days of
the Stones in the 60's and 70's, have rapidly become the number one Stones
band. Witness a storming non-stop 2-hour show, featuring spectacular
costume changes, recalling the raw and basic early Stones. Tackling the
difficult live songs other Stones tributes dare not has become a trademark
and their attention to detail (sitar on Paint It Black and recorder on
Ruby Tuesday!) has even stunned close family members of the originals …
"Phenomenal. I can't wait to tell Keith and Mick. They could easily stand
in for The Stones" - Keith Richards' mother, Doris. " Sent shivers down my
back - it was just like seeing Brian again" - Pat Andrews, mother of Brian
Jones' son Mark. It's Only Rock 'N' Roll But You'll Like It, Like It -
YES YOU WILL. (£6 advance - tickets available from www.fibbers.co.uk,
01904 466149 or the venue)

Wed 14 - THE HANDSOME FAMILY
Chicago-based husband and wife Brett and Rennie Sparks have collaborated
as songwriters for over five years and, live, the band still consists of
only the two of them: Rennie with her Autoharp, bass and melodica and
Brett with guitar and the remote control for the Minidisc that provides
backing tracks (including a few odd frog calls). Variously described as
darkly gothic alt-country, it wasn't until 3rd album "Through The Trees"
that much deserved worldwide and more mainstream attention arrived. Best
New Country Album of the Year, Mojo Americana CD of the Year and inclusion
in numerous Top Ten lists trail this oddball duo and their weird real-life
deadpan tales of suicides, giants, dying swans and lovers' pacts.
Thoroughly recommended. (£5.50 advance - tickets available from
www.fibbers.co.uk, 01904 466149 or the venue)

Thu 15 - ALL THE PRETTY HORSES + Lux Perpetua + The Surf Sluts
Hailing from Minneapolis and fronted by the 6'+ (in heels) transgender
performance artist Venus on guitar decked with feathers, leather, and
sequins, ATPH may be one of the most visually arresting bands you may ever
see. Combine their haunting, hard-edged music touching both on Ziggy
Stardust and Black Sabbath simultaneously with the stage act, and you've
got performance art at the highest level. Vocal drama and sparse guitars
add a Joy Division / Cure feel. Their signature version of Marlene
Dietrich torch song "Falling In Love Again" rubs shoulders with dark-glam
goth and poetry Velvet Underground-style. (£5 advance - tickets available
from www.fibbers.co.uk, 01904 466149 or the venue)

Sat 17 - BIG SKA THING! with MR SHIRAZ + more acts to be added
The first in a regular series of dedicated ska nights starting with
barefaced punk/ska from a skankadelic 7-piece band of hoodlums from
Huddersfield. If you've already caught this Slipknot meets The Specials
bunch of loonies supporting King Prawn (at Fibbs), Voodoo Glow Skulls or
Reel Big Fish, you'll know this is a raw energy show. Even Metal Hammer
were sufficiently moved to say, "Take seven young upstarts, stick em on a
stage, fill the audience up with every conceivable type from within the
metal genre, Mansonites, Slipnotters, skate-punks, etc., shake loudly and
watch the place go apeshit." - 8/10 ! (£3 advance - tickets available
from www.fibbers.co.uk, 01904 466149 or the venue)

Sun 18 - TARRAS
Along with Eliza Carthy and Kate Rusby, Tarras can be credited with
helping to rejuvenate and re-invent the English folk canon. Guided by a
passion for authentic English and traditional Celtic music, they have
successfully applied a contemporary pop-tinged sensibility to their song
writing and performances. Debut release ‘Rising’ was hailed ‘absurdly
fine’ and recent additions include classically trained violinist Louise
Peacock. Second album ‘Walking Down Mainstreet’ was produced by Richard
Evans (Peter Gabriel) and featured on Radio 2. (£6 advance - tickets
available from www.fibbers.co.uk, 01904 466149 or the venue)

Mon 26 - KATE CAMPBELL + Jack Williams
A late-bloomer, singer/songwriter Kate Campbell didn't begin her
professional career until the age of 30, but in short order, she managed
to include the likes of Guy Clark, Emmylou Harris, Buddy Miller and the
heart of the Muscle Shoals classic soul and R&B hit-making machine as both
admirers and collaborators. A clear-water vocal delivery and easy command
of a full-range of American music styles combined to earn Campbell a
Nashville Music Awards "Folk Album Of The Year" nomination whilst wowing
the Cambridge and Philadelphia Folk Festivals. A Mississippi Baptist
preacher's daughter whose formative years were spent in the very core of
the 60's civil rights movement her musical tastes were forged in the
dampered, smoky fires of soul, R&B, Southern rock and folk music, she
counts among long-time friends the legendary Spooner Oldham and Ava
Aldridge. We really have brought two of America's folk treasures to York.
FOR THE BENEFIT OF PERFORMERS AND AUDIENCE AT ACOUSTIC SHOWS, PLEASE NOTE
THAT PEOPLE PERSISTENTLY TALKING LOUDLY AND, IN THE OPINION OF THE VENUE
STAFF, DISRUPTING THE ENJOYMENT OF OTHERS, WILL BE REQUESTED TO LEAVE THE
VENUE WITHOUT REFUND. (£5 advance - tickets available from
www.fibbers.co.uk, 01904 466149 or the venue)

DECEMBER

Sun 02 - NINE BELOW ZERO
Headed up by guitarist/singer Dennis Greaves with the mighty rhythm
section of Gerry McAvoy and Brendan O'Neill (a combined twenty-five years
with Rory Gallagher) and the blistering harmonica of Billy Boy they have a
live combination of lethal, hammering r'n'b that's already been nailed to
the floor of many a famous stage. You know the score already; this is the
hardest-working, tightest, funkiest blues/rock band around.
