| Owsley is clearly playing better than Alex right now and it's not even close. If we are to take the coaches and GM's comments about a fair goaltending competition to heart then Owsley should get the majority of starts in the near future. If the team keeps starting Alex more regularly then Drew I think you can draw a pretty good conclusion that likely there were promises made to Alex and his agent or the Pens about starts and playing time. Because this clearly isn't what's best for the team.
We were at the game last night in Spokane. The two goals Alex gave up in the first were horrible (he did make a nice save on the breakaway immediately before the 2nd goal). If Owsley starts that game we likely get two points. Both Ows and Reid were outstanding. You can't spot Spokane a 2 goal lead on the road, I was very proud of the boys for coming back and getting a point (for those who weren't there, it was the best game the team has played as a whole in weeks). But Alex hasn't played well since coming back from the Pens/Canucks game. He wasn't sharp against Chilliwack but was kept in the whole game. If there's an issue with not getting adjusted to his new pads, why is he using his old pads in warm-ups? I thought it was very odd he used is "not allowed" Itech pads in warmups vs. the Bruins only to switch to the pads he has to wear for the game. I'm not a hockey player, I've never strapped the pads on, maybe there's some good reason for it. But it would seem you would want to wear the pads you have to use as much as possible to break them in and get their feel prior to the game.
I'm not saying Alex shouldn't play at all. There was some negative talk about him coming here in the first place and possibly being given the starters job that I thought was a little unfair to him. He should still get some starts, he should certainly come in if Drew isn't playing well (like the Portland game), but I don't see how anyone who is being honest can say that Drew isn't clearly the #1 right now and Alex should be the backup. Right now Drew clearly gives this team the best chance to win, and they need the wins and confidence that Drew gives them. He makes the big saves to keep the team in the games and Alex isn't doing that right now. If Drew struggles a few games in row then by all means go back to Alex for few and reopen the goaltending competition. But this team needs to regain its confidence, the division lead is quickly slipping away. If winning as a team is more important than the individual, Ows should be the #1 guy until his play dictates that Alex should get another shot at it. |

Yeah Beach's first goal was pretty soft but I don't think Johnsons goal was horrible on Pechursky's part at all, just a pretty sick snipe |
