| Are OHL letters sent to every one, or do the serious draft prospects meet with teams over and above a letter? |

If you don't get a letter or phone call ect. does that pretty much mean you arent getting drafted? Or does it mean you might, but real low. |

well obviously if you get a letter what do you think it means as apposed to not getting a letter ?
reality will hit soon enough |

| Re: OHL letters | February 6 2011, 9:18 PM |
well it's hard to know what to think, because letters are pretty generic. They state that they aren't promising anything, but that you have been identified as a prospect. If many are mailed out, then someone is blowing smoke up ones a**. |

| Re: OHL letters | February 6 2011, 9:37 PM |
again, its better to get a letter than not get one at all becuase that means they have more than a passing interest in you. Some teams also follow up with personal phonje calls. |

To all parents. Letters mean nothing; the players will receive calls from the respective teams. A player might receive calls from several teams and end up getting drafted by a team that doesn't even call..It's great to receive a letter and call, but the rankings usually dictate where the player is drafted. |
|
Bookmark
| Re: OHL letters | February 6 2011, 11:20 PM |
There are no rankings just grades, after that it's up to the teams to internally decide who they pick and where. |

Letters don't mean anything because you could get a letter from majority of teams and still not be drafted. But it is a great confidence builder. |

an OHL team drafting a player also doesnt mean anything since the player needs to make the team.
an NHL drafting a player doesnt mean anything as well since the palyer can get injured and never play

Reality check folks. Only a handful of 95's will make their respective OHL clubs next year. Those kids will see little or no ice in the first year. There are no Crosby's in the Ontario-95 age group but there could be a few late bloomers. Be realistic folks. |

That silly comment is getting really old. No one is really getting rattled over it any more, it's lost it's shock value. We all know that it is just to get people rattled. We know the 95's will be drafted like every other year, so maybe come up with some other defecating disturbing type of statement. You have to be boring yourself by now as well. LOL |

Complete BS. Many of the '94's drafted in the first 3 rounds are playing full time in the OHL.

You arent one of the families that mortgaged their homes and got everything they could to try to get drafted and flashed money to coaches, scouts????

We've had 7 or 8 scouts talk to us, a couple have called my son personally, and we've received no letters. Letters aren't that big a deal, and quite frankly neither are talks or phone calls. On draft day the team is going to select the player they think will help them 2 years down the road, simple as that. |

They ohl questionnaire is real. They send it to players who they think have a potential to play and suceed in the ohl. They don't have a limit on how many players they send it to. But they do send it to variety of players on the list according to ohl central scouting which ranks players by grade (AA,A,B,C, LV,EP) which i s not top 100 list. They would normally send it to majority of the AA and A prospects but they do also send it other players who may not be ranked as high. Thescout, scoutingnews and redline are not legit lists. |

That is the email my son received on 2/7, and we received an email on 2/9 directly from an OHL team. We have not sent the OHL Questionnaire back and we do not live in Canada, so I am assuming this team scouted my son on their own and wanted to reach out to talk to us... |

The OHL questionnaire has gone out and several OHL teams have sent e-mails/letters expressing interest in certain players, making the case for why the players should play in the O and for their team and inviting them to visit the team and see a home game. However, nothing is settled - OHL teams will continue to scout 95's right through the OHL Cup and their views on who to draft won't be settled until May 7th. |

These letters don't mean a thing except some interest in the kid. Doesn't mean they will be drafted; often they are not. It means there is some hope. |

my kids got drafted last year and this is how it works. Some teams give letter, some teams dont. Teams interested in the top 200 kids will also receive phone calls, asking them stuff like ;
1. Where would you like to play next year
2. Who in the NHL do you most play like
3. What are your strenghts, weaknesses ect..
you get the point
The kids going in the first round or two will get some interviews, although not all teams interview.
From my experience, there will be a few phone calls right before the draft day, and most likely those teams will make a run for your kid.
Be aware, they lie, most teams that called said that if the kid was still available by such a round that they would take him, and as the rounds went by it became clear that they tell you what you want to hear.
Do yourself a favour, dont watch the draft, or if you do, dont let your kid watch, theres allot more disapointment then anything else. In the 1994 year, i know of at least 10 families that received the letters, phone calls ect.. that werent drafted at all, immagine the kid looking at the screen waiting for his name to pop up over 6 hrs !! |

we had fun with it. Height 8 ft, weight 265lbs, shoots both left and right, have 2 advisors. Dads occupation, ex NHL player, moms occupation, puck bunny.
Coach, Pat Quinn, Manager Don Meehan. Do you want to play in the ohl, no right to the show. LOL |

Agree with 512 it was tough last year as all players appeared on the Draft List, approx 1500, that gave them all the illusion that there was something coming.
With my 89 and 90 the draft list contained only 400 names so if you were not on it ... you knew not to bother to watch the computer screen.
My 89 had no or little chance draft day was nothing special
My 90 had received some interest so when he didnt go it was a crappy day!
My 94 had interest and went so great day but horrible for the ones thinking there was a chance.
But the parents have to take some of the blame sometimes placing expectations etc on them...but it is hard not to when a scout for an OHL team actually calls your house and speaks to your son. Alot of anger after the draft and the parents and kids go a little bonkers...that is one of the reasons that Major Midget is, at times, so messed up, |

^^ above statement puts it out there. what about those kids that do get all the calls, letters, hype from agents, calls from ohl teams and then nothing the day of draft. that would be very sad forsure. just thinking about it and if i was the kid, would be very tough. |

i know from experience that its tough on all the kids, my guy was picked in the middle rounds, but for whatever reason he thought he was going earlier. I know of kids that were down in the dumps for weeks after the draft, and the fathers still bitter at all the broken promises ect...
Look at the bright side, if your kid isnt selected, then he's free to persue other avenues. I think its much better to be undrafted and get invites when you're 17 to several teams, then to be drafted in the higher rounds and have little to no chance of making it.
The only advantage of being drafted is that you get to go to an ohl camp the first year, where undrafted players cant. |

Is it unusual to get a letter a year before you're eligible for the draft or is this a mistake? |

| Re: OHL letters | February 16 2011, 5:13 PM |
Well if some teams don't send out letters or contact there prospects, then there could be an instance where a boy has not been talked to by a team or hasn't recieved a letter and gets picked up by one of those teams that dont make contact to players. And while another player could have been contacted by the serval of the teams that talk to players, but wont get picked up. Just have to wait for drafted day I guess |

We received the generic letter and questionaire today as well... After reading these blogs, it seems it means very little and it probably was sent to all 95's this year... even my son...who plays in the Alliance the bottom of the barrel... so it means nothing |

1:16, by all means never give up the dream. but at the same time don't unduly raise false expectations.
the reality is that there are many teams that don't have any free agents on them, ie most of the better teams, while some bottom feeders like Barrie may have a couple signed. so in a twenty team league you'll be pressed to find 20 free agents/undrafted kids.
these kids, in addition to the better AA kids, who perform reasonably well in T2 become the D3 and lower level D1 "partial schollie" kids. that's reality and not a bad one at that. |

43 is double I what I thought and I love to see a list of these players. the point is how many were regulars ie, played 40 games or more.
those stats don't look unreasonable but I'd like to see a dump of the names by round, undrafted/free agent and the imports. again at 37, it appears almost every team maximizes it's 2 player quota which seems awefully high. bringing in imports is tres expensive. |

Each team has 2 euro picks every year.
They may not sure them, as they are allotted only 2 euro's on the roster. |

If you're a viable draft prospect you already know.
It might surprise you how much scouts from different teams will know about who's going where. If you're close enough you'll hear scout talk to each other and you hear 'your guy', 'John's guy' in the conversation, those are marked and picked players. In the weeks before the draft, players in the first round know where they are going, most of the second round players know they are going second round.
After that it's a crapshoot, teams make up their mind in the days before the draft.
