Bad move Ben!!

Yo Ben, if you want our, at least MY, fics on your page, you had better ask permission from me and the other writers. Those fics are OUR property and taking them from other web page owners without the writer's permission is called, well... stealing, copyright infringement, plagiarism and robbery. Suggestion: apologize first, and ask permission (a little too late, huh?) and I'm sure we'll let you post up our fics on your page.

That's the only way I could make a site.

Hey, if you went to my site you would see that I thank the pages and the authors from which I am collecting the fiction. I have to have a site to convince anyone to send anything to me. I wouldn't think it would be stealing. Unless you authors give one site an exclusive right to host the fan fiction. And about the stealing, copyright infringement, plagiarism etc... I never said that I made the stories myself. I have email links to all of the authors that I could find email for and I have yet to see a Mulan fan fiction that has a notice that says that it couldn't be moved from the site it's on. Come on, I am only trying to host them, not take credit for them! I had to take the fics at first because, no fics, no site. I don't think the authors would email me their work when I say that I am going to make a site and I don't have a site. In conclusion, I am sorry that the authors get all worked up about this, but I give them just as much credit as any other site dose. From now one I am going to email the authors and ask them to send me their fan fiction. Besides, I think that for fan fiction, once you post it, any site can host as long as they give full credit to the author and just take the text of the fiction and not the whole website.

Your heart's in the right place, anyway

I'll offer you a "Get out of jail free" card on that explanation. I must agree with Phoenix that it would have been much better to ask the authors first. But there are not a lot of places posting fanfic, so there is a need, and it sounds as if you have definitely worked hard to amend your error.

Good luck with your site. I'll come visit it soon and see how you're doing!

DON'T PANIC!!

August 18 1998, 3:43 PM

Hey, all! I just visited Ben's page, and I honestly think he did a really nice job setting up nothing "worse" than a LINK to everyone's fanfic pages. And I don't think what he did was in any way infringing on copyright or author's privileges, since all these are LINKS--not transcriptions of original work (which would have been a no-no). Traditionally, it's *polite* to ask whether you can link to someone's page, but it's certainly not required. Most people are *honored* to be linked to someone else's page, since it increases traffic to their site. :) Remember: Ben has not transcribed anyone's work. He merely has linked to *existing pages.* Since The Gehr is a work in progress, and I like to edit and revise regularly, I DO NOT want anyone posting my stuff on their own server where I can't get to it and make modifications. But I DO like as many links as possible, so's I can share and get feedback. I suppose many of you authors out there feel the same way, no? Ben's page seems fine to me. And I thank him for the link! Okay, I'll stop rambling now. Tian Ning (getting ready to post some more of Shan Yu's story...)

OOPS. I lied. DO panic!

August 18 1998, 4:02 PM

Sorry about that!!!

I just took another look at Ben's page and he *did* transcribe and put many other people's original pieces on his own server. This is a definite no-no.

As Kat says, your heart is in the right place, Ben. However, I suggest you take steps to re-do the page as a simple *LINK* page, and not carry the actual fiction on your server, unless you have written permission from the authors.

Crawling back into The Gehr. (Hopefully to find Shan Yu there...)

I agree!

i agree, you need to link to the originals! i gotta give props to the webmasters for putting them up, seems to me you taking credit if you're transcribing them onto your own site and without permission! a big NO NO!

Look, I will link to other sites pages if they are put up by the author and not a Mulan fan fic page like I am trying to get mine to be. I am only trying to host everyone's fanfic and you guys seem to think that fanfic can't be moved from one site to another. Now, I don't agree with that but I am going to email all of the authors and see if it is okay with them if I host their fan fiction. I am going to take down their fanfic if an author wants me too. So, hopefully that will clear up everything.

fanfic for all

you got a good point ben, fanfics shouldn't have to stay on any one website, and as long as the you have permission and the authors are fine with it, so am i =) i think you have a great site with the biggest collection of fanfics.
