I have a cat that I have had for 8 years now. She has done quite well with going in the litter box, but until recently she hasn't been using her litter box. She has been potting in the floor (in various spots) or next to it. Sometimes we will clean the litter box and not even a few seconds later she will potty next to it! She also meows quite loud when she is peeing or pooping and sometimes running real fast. I thought that it could be not enough water in her diet, but i am not sure. I have taken her to the emergency vet once and they gave her some meds. I just dont know what to do. Got any suggestions?

Thanks!

I will likely have many suggestions but I need a little more information. Does she urinate outside the box or defecate or both? When did this start? How many boxes do you have? Where are they located? Have you changed brands of litter lately?

I will undoubtedly have more questions, but let's start with that for now.

Best,

Ok.... she does urinate and defecate outside her litter box. This has been going on for a over a year now. At one point in time I had 2 litter boxes (an automated one and regular box) She has used the same litter for a long time. Her litter box is located in the kitchen near the living room. We havent changed litter at all. She uses tidy cats with the small grains.

Do you know what kind of medication she was given? When was this? Did you give the full course or is she still on it? What did they tell you about her symptoms?

I am not totally for sure what kind of medicine that she was given. I know that it was in liquid form. One was a white liquid and the other was pink. She only had to have it for only a few weeks after her visit to the vet. Her symptoms... was that she acted like she was cold. She was shivering, so they wrapped her up in a blanket. They said everything else was fine. They were a little concerned about her being constepated and her not being in pain. The medicine seemed to help some but it made it runny.
