Cause for Concern or Overreacting?

We have a male Himalayan named Crash(I'm not exactly sure of his age; my fiance got him before we met, so I know he's over 2 years) who, in my opinion, has been acting weirdly this week. This year was full of changes--a new baby and a new house. A few months ago, our other cat, Chip, died suddenly. Since then, Crash has acted skittish, running from me and my daughter and spending most of his time hiding in a spare room. The best way I can describe it is that he seems lost since Chip's death. Before, he would often come to us to be held or petted, but just doesn't do that often. About the most social he usually gets is hopping up on the back of the couch in the living room.

Then suddenly this week he started crying all the time. This is actually not the first time it has happened; he is not neutered and he used to cry when a neighbor's female would go into heat. This would last a few days, getting worse at night, then go away for a month or two. He has now been crying almost nonstop for a week. Today the crying has been a little less, but when he does cry it's softer and (to me) almost sounds pained. Today I also noticed that he was out and about with us more, laying in the middle of the kitchen floor and rolling around in the living room. I watched him several times tonight take a few steps and lie down right in front of me, where he usually runs away quickly and hides in a corner. Just a moment I looked at him and his pupils seemed very red. I expressed this concern to my fiance, but I think he's just overwhelmed with the bad stuff that has happened in our life lately (his dad passed away a week before Christmas) and doesn't want to think about. I'm worried that something is wrong and we'll be facing the loss of another cat.

Am I overreacting or should I insist we take him to the vet, just in case?
