How do you create a gif. with a transparant background.

When I create one using 'transparant' background, the background just turns out white.

File --> Export --> Tranparent Gif --> Transparency Tab --> Select "Areas that match this color" and set a decent tolerance of at least 1. You'll need to sweep your little ol' cursor over to the image in question at this point and identify the color you want made transparent (notice how the cursor becomes an eyedropper once over the image). Then click "OK" and save the image. Works for me.
