Here’s a great Golf-O-Metric to measure the depth of your swing. I’m going to keep this short and just work with the right arm. Do the same exercise with the left arm and you will have achieved Mr. Hogan’s famous left arm. <?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />
- Put both hands together – palms, fingers and thumbs touching (see my previous beginners lesson). There is no grip here all you are doing is just clasping the hands together.
- Point both hands down at an imaginary ball with both arms straightened.
- Without moving any other part of your body push the right hand towards the ball. The right arm will pull the right shoulder. If your head is moving then you are not doing this correctly – just let the hand push down – sliding along the left palm pulling the arm and shoulder.Do this very slowly.
- How far down did the right hand go? My right wrist joint can go three inches below the tip of my middle left finger.
- Do this exercise very slowly as you will soon learn that as you extend down your right shoulder will be pulling the muscles of the spine and back.
- As I said earlier this golf-O-metric can and should be done with both sides. Ben Hogan was able to keep a straight left arm while swing deep inside because he extended his left arm 2-4 inches with his shoulder muscles. My grandfather called these estensor muscles.
- It is imperative that you do not move your head to the side you are extending. This will inhibit the piston action of the shoulders moving North and South of the Spine of the Back.
Please do this slowly.
