When I look at my videos I can see where I can improve and one area is with my shoulders. Joe used to tell me a lot to get my left shoulder down and as I look at my own swing - I still have that tendency to keep level shoulders.
I've started working on pushing down the left should by forcing up the right shoulder at the top of the backswing and at the start of the downswing I'm focusing my feel to piston the right shoulder down while at the same time forcing my lower body down (the sitz) and at the very moment of impact adding in the cross lateral move.
I play graphite shafts and I almost broke one today. I could literally feel the bend in the shaft at impact. I have metal shafted wedges and could feel the bend in them also. The divot went at least 1.5 inches deep into the ground add to this a .25 + inch in grass and we're talking a 2 inch deep divot.
The depth of this swing when adding all three, the right shoulder - left shoulder piston, the sitz (downward move of the lower body towards the ground ) and the cross lateral move is amazing.
When you try this you're going to find that you will hit behind the ball many times until the timing sets in so don't be discouraged about hitting a fat shot. Always better to hit behind the ball than to miss it on top - Joe said. You need to train yourself to hit deep into the ground. Yes, this is impossible to achieve on a range mat so try to go to a grass range as often as you can.
You can only work on this move once you have mastered holding the lower body anchored and have sealed wrists.
