I think that the idea of the new series is a good idea, but i can tell already that they messed it up bad. First of all I think that taking Star Trek out of the title was a big mistake. It shows that they're doing their own thing instead of continuing with Gene Roddenberry's vision. Second, the ship and technology is way too 24th century-ish for the time considering the technology that they had in TOS. If you look at the timeline created, the reason was earth's World War III which destroyed a lot of the civilizations. Some technologies obviosly developed, such as warp drive, but they did so independantly not by large companys like Sony or microsoft, which would have bankrupt, which is why the basic technologies work well, but aren't necessarily built to look pretty and appeal to a customer. Look at all the ships built in Kirk's time. The nacelles were huge compared to the ship. The first time we begin to see smaller nacelles relative to the ship's size is in the 23rd century. Also, the Klingons are going to be keeping the forehead ridges. Are we ever going to find out what happened to the klingons that made them change? In DS9's "Trials and Tribble-ations" Worf was asked about it and he said that it was not shared with non-klingons, so obviously something happened. The good thing is that maybe we'll get to see some of the other races that will later belong to the Federation. Stay open-minded, but I think that this is the end of trek on TV. Hopefully the movies will stay alive and excellent!
Until Trials and Tribulations, the explaination was "because they couldn't afford the makeup". Therefore they DID have ridges, we just have to imagine them. But after T&T where they acknowledged the difference, we just have to then go with the underground explaination, that they were altered to 'blend in' better with the humans. Perhaps at the end of the new series, they will conviene a Klingon councel where they decide to alter all Klingons that may have contact with Humans in the future (considering the rumored 'bad' first contact) and end this once and for all.
In "Trials and Tribble-ations," Jadzia did ask why Klingons didn't have ridges in TOS. Worf refused to comment, only confirming that the aliens in question were Klingons.
