I just turned on CNN this morning and heard this story - grandmother made 9 year old girl run for 3 hours without stopping so she could get a candy bar. The girl died from dehydration. Normally, I don't pay attention to such stories as they stick in my mind and I don't want to think of such negative things. But really - how stupid can people be? The girl wanted a candy bar. Normal thing for a 9 year old. Was the grandmother expecting that she should burn off the calories before consuming it? I just don't get it. Some really crazy people out there.
The child must have already been suffering other abuse/neglect, wouldn't you think? In a couple of reports it says she 'stole' the candy, but does not say from who or where, so maybe from the 46 year old gandmom?
without hydration, she could have definitely had problems just from that, even without other medical issues. The first report I saw indicated that she took the candy bar without permission, so I assume that means from the grandmother. But we know how poorly reporting can be sometimes, so who knows. So, so, unbelievably sad to me.
This story really got to me too. The Grandmother is on trial, right? I need to click on the article. I heard it on the news while driving home last night and just couldn't believe it.
They are seeking the death penalty for the Grandmother and life in prison for the step-mother. The little girl ate a candy bar and did not tell her grandma. Her punishment was to run for hours. She was a healthy girl with no underlying health problems. Grandma and step-mother are trash, I pray they get what they deserve.
I thought they were seeking justice for her and not saying it was underlying health issues. I think they will get what they deserve. Just heart breaking that sweet girl had to die.
Apparently the girl had some medical issue (bladder maybe? I can't remember) that was aggravated by ingesting caffiene, which is why she wasn't supposed to have chocolate. I don't think the medical issue was part of why she died though.
And the dad was over in Afghanistan, which is why the girl was with the grandmother and stepmother. She was hospitalized for a few days before she died, so he was able to make it back in time to see her before she was gone. So awful. Horrible for the girl, her father and her mother. Heartbreaking.
