Another alternative is to join your local Astro club or society.
There are always proud owners of a range of different 'scopes willing to show them to anyone wishing to have a look.
You can then compare the different models and types in your price bracket to make a more informed choice based on actual viewing conditions and how the telescope feels to use.
I would also suggest buying a second hand 'scope, saving you some money. With the dollars saved you can purchase better eyepieces. I made this mistake and it is only now after 18 months that I can afford to get good EP's. EP's last a lifetime, telescopes come and go! Use the Astro clubs to find good used telescopes.
