NEED ADVICE

Im a newbie to astronomy.I need help in getting the best telescope for about $500 and under.I was thinking about a 90mm orion refractor on an equatorial or the meade 90mm ds refractor on the electronic altazimuth with autostar.I guess im choosing between refractors since it comes to my understanding that they perform better than reflectors in light polluted areas.I live in Carson,CA. about 15 south of Los Angeles,which is heavily light polluted.I don't know maybe it would be better to get a reflector due to greater aperture?Portability is an issue.Can someone help me with my decision?
