CHECK ENGINE WARNING LAMP

Have an 88 acura integra LS 5-speed that was hitting 500 RPM on idle. Went to adjust distributer rotor to up the RPMs, but now the "CHECK ENGINE" Warning lamp came on. Tried to readjust it back, but it still stays on. Any advice out there?
