My buddy has a 217 and brags and brags about how its better than any 127 .His argument , 217 has a newer movement, Only 1000x made, the
"Destro" difference and how he has the "Marina Militare"
markings and the fiddy does not. Also the thing about not getting permission from the Italy's Navy , bla bla bla.
I love the Fiddy to death but I'm getting bullied big time .
Any really good Fiddy comebacks other than "perfect simplicity" " Its a Fiddy " " fiddy came first " ?
Ironically, destros usually carry a bit of a premium in the secondary markets, except in this case and perhaps that of the 55 vs. 56. But look at the 219 or the 22...they just sell higher generally. I think the 127 will always be highly sought after as it was the first of it's kind and still is. But deep down, I can't help but feel that 10 years from now the 217 will command a higher price. It's one of only 3 modern day Panerai with the "Marina Militare" designation, making it a somewhat special piece. There won't be any more with that designation. If OP ever releases a similar version, it would likely steal value from the 127 before it steals from the 217. Of course, this is pure speculation. Hard to argue that one is better than the other. It's more a matter of personal taste. You'll probably find just as many 127 advocates as you will 217 advocates.
You think if panerai issues a 47 mm historic piece that the 127 prices will plumit ?
I think theirs only so many fiddys. You can make another 1950 of watch XYZ but "a fiddy is fiddy" !!!
I have carefully thought this through as quite dear to my heart:

This topic is dear to me because the 127 and 217 are 2 of my all time favourite Panerai pieces.
Only 2 of your friend's points are valid, in my view.
Its very true indeed that only 3 pieces in Panerai's modern history has the MM words and they ARE prized. Reason is permission has to be sought from the Italian Navy to use the words, while Panerai had a very good relationship with them and ARE allowed to use, its done sparingly.
I can't argue about the scarcity value of the destro either.
The movement is really no big deal. CDG finish, better than the "Panerai Panerai" finish of the 127, really no a reason why you buy either piece in my view.
That said, EMOTIONALLY, the 127 sings FAR more to me than the 217.
And if it does to you, I think the logical arguments should not make much difference.
I, too, have both, but I favor the 217 for the simple reason that it wears much more comfortably on my left wrist. The case guard on the 127 digs too much on the bend of my wrist, so my 217 is in fact my daily wearer.
Oh, and by the way, I refer to senor 217 as "Fidestro".
