The crown and hands are the parts that suffer most from wear and corrosion. These watches are 70 years old and at some point of time they may had to get service that involved replacement of the crown. Remember that these watches were worn by divers in WW2, so they were used quite extensively.
IMO both crowns are 'correct', which means they are both Rolex, perhaps the bigger onion type was the one originally delivered with the watch.

Cheers and best from the holyland,

~Asi~

I was already across from asking you, I thought if someone could give the answer on this it would be you. happy.gifwink.gifwink.gif

After seeing it, I was very curious what was written on the caseback.

Tried to make some closeup pics, but it was very difficult.

Thanks for the answer happy.gif

Again thanks for sharing these Vintage Gems Asi ,

What interested me in watches first many years ago were Vintage Divers and though I like some Modern watches there is something about the Soul of a Vintage Piece that just does it for me .

Lovely ,

All the best,

Vic happy.gif

In my view...

It simply can't get better than this. Depicting those two watches together is just downright amazing.

Asi,

August 12 2012, 4:49 PM

Is the leather NATO a strap that was often used in that period?

I don't believe it was ever a Panerai factory used strap, but possibly a quick go-to by the military users??

What do you know?

Don't think it's suitable

August 12 2012, 8:00 PM

for a tool, too fragile (at least as thin leather). The one on my watch is a vintage model from 2012. wink.gif
