The newer models are better

Indeed the older models had lots of troubles, but I have heard the new models are a bit better and have fewer issues. Still there's not a whole lot you can do to fix them other than change the modules.

My best advice is to keep it out of the water as much as possible - I know what it's rated for, but they seem to not like the water very much!
