That is an entirely different situation; what is missing in ellipsis is easily understood as it is usually a descriptive verb.

It doesn't really apply in this case as you intended the phrase 'my wife's gift' to mean 'the gift that my wife gave to me'.
I don't know what this type of unspoken intent would be called since the phrase is completely ambiguous.
The words could just as easily mean 'the gift I gave to my wife' wink.gif
