Response to What's on your wrist today?...
It has the 'standard' movement with the useless auto winder mounted on it. No problem as it hand winds so nicely.
The movement and the inside of the watch are spotless.
The case is chrome plated mystery metal and the bracelet is not too bad for the $14 I paid for the whole watch; including shipping!
The case back has a decent gasket on it and the crown screws down about 5 turns. The crown doesn't feel wobbly when it's out.
The date is quickset and the bezel is uni directional; just barely...it's pretty stiff :-O
The dial is well printed with crisp, sharp ink; the markers are all applied chrome and well aligned. The hands are standard 'Mercedes' chromed with paint(no lume glow at all).
The bracelet is not great but not unwearable. The clasp is the cheapest part of it but it works.
Comparing this watch to the Alpha sub shows up a few differences in quality.
The Alpha has an SS case but it doesn't look as well finished as this chromed base metal job.
The Soki dial is definitely better finished than the Alpha.
Both hand wind but the Alpha automatic system works like a dream where the Soki is incapable of winding itself.
The Soki is definitely a better manual winding experience and as mentioned the crown is pretty solid compared to the wobbly Alpha.
Overall, the Alpha has a slight edge but mostly due to the case and bracelet. While the ST16 movement is no slouch; I can't get over the real world quality of the 'standard' in this and my 'Dragon' watch.
For a watch under $15CDN, this Soki is quite a bit better than I was expecting
