............... >>> Its true: it didn`t bother me till about not long ago that I wasn`t sure if my Timex WS4 is showing the right measurements (altimeter and/or barometer). I can`t speak for all the other ABC watches but Timex says that by adjusting the altimeter, the barometer reading will "self-set".

OK, fair enough so I "Googled" my location and I found out that I`m at 183 meters above sea level. Cool! But hold on... 183m to what point in my town? Downtown? Damn... it should be easier than this. Ok, let see a reliable reference point. Lake Ontario! Perfect! Basicaly, anywhwere you are around the lake on the beach, you can take that as a reference point. All I have to know, how high is Lake Ontario from the Sea Level. A quick search showed 76 meters above sea level.

So, if you wanna make sure your altimeter is working right, find a lake near you, and find out its elevation from Sea Level. Go stand on its beach, input the elevation data into your "Altimeter settings" and you are ready to go.

Port au Prince...even the New Orleans disaster. Here there are small articles about the fear of the food chain contamination, people still evacuating the area....the stories are still horrific but the media coverage is now gone.

Because the altimeter and barometer function both use the same sensor (an air pressure sensor). The watch's software extrapolates your altitude relative to approximately 1bar at sea level (roughly 29.5 inches of mercury). It assumes that as your altitude increases, relative air pressure will drop, thus being able to accurately determine your altitude. The problem is that this system assumes a static atmosphere in order to work correctly and does not take into account variances in pressure such as drops caused by storms, temperature or microclimates at elevation. the result is that in order to have a relatively reliable reading, you have to have a local reference point to calibrate our watch to when you want to use it.

Hiking apps on a smartphone with GPS enabled are probably far more accurate for this kind of use than on any ABC watch.

.............. >>> I prefer the altimeter function. It seems to have a much more reliable setting. Even if the accuracy is +/- 5 Meters (that`s what I red somewhere) but the fact that you can pick a solid reference point, makes the altimeter a good feature to have.

A lot a GPS devices are having an altimeter feature. I may just get one of those at some point and use it as a refernce.
