"Grand time"

by Willie

Well, as Joyce Ann has told you, we did get to meet Homer yesterday. Sheila Fleming and Rose Ann couldn't go with us this time and we really missed them! Sheila B., Diane and I left early enough to do a "little" shopping before our lunch date. We met for lunch at 12:30 and then went to Homer's house for dessert and coffee. He tolerated us well, could be all the extra treats he got!

Margaret is the newest grandmother (as she says) "she got a late start"! She brought grandbaby pictures to share with us and we passed them around. He's a cutie!

I didn't get back in time to go to the ballgame but listened to as much as I could stand. It was a real shocker!

Girls, in Morgan's defense, I have to tell you that she was RIGHT! The page we were asking about was BLANK! What we were looking for was in my old book and hadn't been moved to the new one. I should have known that Morgan was smarter than that!!!!

for coming over today. That House on Main is really a neat place...even kind of creepy today with all the Halloween stuff. Thanks for coming to the house and showing Homer such grand attention. As you could see, he goes with the flow with a wag of that curly tail. We hope you all will come back soon. We really should do more visiting more often. Thanks also for my new "Dog Lovers" mug.....fits me perfect!!

Homer

I read the forum before I came to work this morning so I was really anxious to see the paper. Sure enough, there was Homer on the front page. Great story! I will have to admit that I thought our "Floozie Ann" was nuts when she told me that she was going to adopt Homer. We are going to meet him tomorrow.

I hope I have my house cleaned up before you girls get here.....I have been on the phone all day about the article!!

I haven't heard for sure from Carol Anne or Margaret, but hopefully by in the morning I will know. I told them I would meet them at my exit and we could drive to the restaurant together....I'm sure they don't know where it is since it's new.

I hope everyone else is coming!! Remember you're coming to my house for dessert!! I'm looking forward to seeing everyone. We really should do this on a regular basis.

Floozie Ann and the Miracle Dog Homer, Wonderful Article

by Charles Lee

Miracle dog gets sight restored, new lease on life

By DEBRA MCCOWN | Reporter / Bristol Herald Courier
Published: October 29, 2009

ABINGDON, Va. Stuck in a rural Kentucky shelter, Homer was sick, bald and blind. By all accounts, he didnt stand much of a chance.

But two caring women, with the help of the Internet, opened a new world for the good-natured cocker spaniel and a veterinarian at Virginia Tech restored his sight.

Joyce Vanover calls Homer her miracle dog.

The fact that he was found was a miracle, and somebody thought he was worth saving, that was a miracle, said Vanover, a retired elementary school teacher.

It was a miracle that he survived. Its a miracle that his attitude was so wonderful even though he couldnt see a thing, Vanover said. Now that hes got his sight, his world is magical.

Homer didnt have much to say about his dramatic change of fortune during a recent interview at his Abingdon home but he was enjoying the soft, warm blanket he lay on and the toys bought just for him.

I wanted to get a dog nobody else would want, said Vanover, who admits shes a sucker for an underdog human or animal in need of a fighting chance.
I guess Ive always been for the kids and animals who dont have someone to love them, she said. I guess what drew me to Homer was the fact that he could be blind and yet accept life so well and be happy. Hes an inspiration to all of us. Were all going to have disappointments and problems in life, but youve got to keep on going.

Before he found his way to Abingdon, Homer was so sick with mange, eye infection and heartworms, it took half a year to restore his health, said Hannah Harris, the Winchester, Ky., woman who rescued him from the shelter and served as his foster mom.

Seeing a dog that was that sweet and friendly and forgiving, made me really want to give him a chance to have a decent life, Harris said. He had obviously been through a lot.

Her nonprofit group, Brighter Days for Shelters, works with rural animal shelters to get their pets on the Internet and adopted.
It was through a Web page on Petfinder.com that Vanover found Homer and fell in love.

Im the one whos lucky because Ive learned so much from him, Vanover said. There are millions of dogs out there if people would just give them a chance.

She said she loved Homer as a blind dog, but when she heard it might be possible, she wanted to give him a chance at regaining his sight. So she took him to Virginia Tech, where it cost $1,800 for the miracle.

Were doing the same thing that I think we do in human hospitals, said Dan Binder, a resident in the ophthalmology program at the veterinary teaching hospital and the man who performed Homers successful cataract surgery in June.

But, he said, Most people dont let their cataracts go to this stage because they would be bumping up against walls.

One of Homers eyes was too far damaged, but Binder was able to restore sight to the other eye using an artificial lens.

He said he does eye surgery on a dog about once a week. And although many of his canine patients leave without treatment, more and more people are willing to pay for surgery and other health care for beloved animals.

Hes done great with it, Binder said of Homer. Hes really trucked along, and he just has the best attitude.

Vanover said Homer is a wonderful companion who loves long walks and riding in the passenger seat of their convertible to the sound of good gospel music.

I dont care to shop. Travel is not my thing. Hanging out with Homer is what I do, she said, and trying to make people aware that shelters have some wonderful animals.

She said people can learn, from animals like Homer, how to live their own lives: with resiliency, calm perseverance and unconditional love.

As I told you, I guessed who 1 of your visitors had to be. When Bufford Lee posted, I knew it had to be Bill Deel. He was in the library yesterday, and I was asking him all about the trip! He said that you had shown them around on your boat and that he had a really good time! He has not recovered from the trip home. Said it was 36 hours from the time they left the motel until he got home!

Thanks to All

for the prayers, friendship and continued support from all of you. Ron's surgery went much better than surgeons and anyone else anticipated. He will be in hospital another week or so. They did remove entire bladder, prostate, lymph nodes and did bladder diversion. Will be at least 6 mos of recovery at home. He will have to wear a bag the rest of his life and we are learning how to take care of that before we go home. Not as difficult to care for, as I first thought. Will keep all updated and keep us in your prayers. Pat C

Sheila Alice and viruses

by Ginger

Not been on website latley, but yes to the viruses going around on computer. I have the same you had, a popup that would not go away and wanting to sell me some software. Called my repairman and he came to my house and fixed it. Before he came by he told me not to buy anything, they were tryig to get my credit card no., etc.

BUT after he supposedly fixed my desk top, it has not worked right. I keep getting pop ups that want to sell me more software and I can do my emails and read, even send them out, but it won't let me go anywhere else am writing this on my laptop, thank goodness it seems to be okay.

My desktop is 6 years old and everyone tells me it has lasted me longer than the normal 4 years life of a computer. What person can afford to buy a $1000 computer every 4 years????? Maybe I will get this all worked out soon. This man tells me I had a "worm" and a lot of the viruses were going around right now on many peoples comuters. Sometimes I wish I had never heard of a computer!!!!!!!!!

Siam International Bike Week Leaders of the pack

by Charles Lee

EDITOR'S PICK Leaders of the pack
By Kitchana Lersakvanitchakul The Nation on Sunday Published on October 11, 2009

Harley-Davidsons old and new fly the flag at the first Siam International Bike Week

, . ,

Bike events are not new to Thailand - indeed the Phuket and Chiang Mai Bike Shows have been drawing vast numbers of motorbike enthusiasts for years, as have smaller events in other cities all over the country.
Now downtown Bangkok gets to host an event, with Siam International Bike Week 2009 all set to rev its Harley-Davidson engines on November 28 in Siam Square.

"Motorcycle events have been organised for more than 10 years but they tend to be domestic affairs and sponsored by one or more motorcycle brands. This is the first time an entire event is being devoted to Harley-Davidson and its international image," says Chaiyaphat "Aor" Chanvilai, founder and managing director of architectural company Jomsubhan and organiser of the Bike Week.

"If our event were to be included on the annual World Calendar of Motorcycle events, Harley-Davidson bikers from all over the world would automatically come along.

"Last year's Phuket Bike Week drew foreign enthusiasts from Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia, the Philippines and Brunei. We even had bikers from Saudi Arabia who deplaned in Singapore and rode up to Phuket. I'm really hoping they'll come to Bangkok. I'd also like to see bikers from Japan participating in our event."

The Harley Owners Group says its global membership currently stands at 1.3 million. Established by Harley-Davidson in 1983, the group kicked off with a few thousand customers keen to share their passion and show off their precious motorcycles. By 1985, membership had increased to more than 60,000 and in 2006, it passed the one million mark.

Chaiyaphat, who won Bt1 million on Channel 3's reality quiz show "Atchariya Kham Khuen" ("One Night Genius") three years ago, says there are about 10,000 Harley-Davidson owners in the Kingdom alone and that he's expecting more than 3,000 local and international bikers to turn out for this first event.

"I think Siam Square is an ideal venue," he says. "It's accessible by Skytrain and near major shopping centres Siam Paragon, Mah Boonkrong and Central World, so we'll draw the crowds. Most importantly, it's suitable for the bikers.

"I initially intended to block off several sois in Siam Square but in the end, settled for just sois 2 and 3 because of budget limitations,"

Chaiyaphat, who is spending Bt6 million on his dream, says visitors and participants will be able to enjoy a wealth of activities on the day. These include the "Ride for the King", an "Asawin" (Knight of the King) exhibition with speeches by the honorary bikers, several Harley-Davidson booths, a concert, a Miss Siam International Bike Week contest and a Mr Young At Heart competition. There'll also be Harley-Davidson contests for "Best of Classic Bike", "Best of Custom Bike", "Best of Stock Bike" and "Best of Character", plus a Hall of Fame Award.

"The exhibition should feature eight 'Asawin' motorcycles, among them the Shovelhead 1973, and the Electra Glide Police 1200cc, which was named by His Majesty the King. The Hall of Fame award will go to a Harley Davidson rider who has brought honour and fame to his country."

Those who are planning on spending the day at the event might want to snap up one of the 5,000 tickets for the lucky draw. While pricey at Bt883 a pop, the winner does take home a Harley-Davidson Sportster Iron 883cc worth Bt658,000.

"It is the new and smallest Harley-Davidson bike from America," explains Chaiyaphat, who's been riding a Harley-Davidson for 15 years and currently owns a Screamin' Eagle Ultra Classic, priced at Bt1.8 million.

"I used to own a Softtail Sportster but these days a Touring class bike better suits my needs.

"Our country has some of the best motorcycle routes in the world and the roads are good in several provinces. I especially enjoy riding from Chokchai Farm to Lamtakong in Nakhon Ratchasima; the scenery is incredibly picturesque," concludes Chaiyaphat, who's a member of the Immortals Thailand Motorcycle Club.

Homer's visit

by Sheila B.

Hey Joyce Ann--you are welcome to bring Homer by the library any time you are in Clinwood! I can't wait to meet him. I don't get on the forum very often--I don't have a computer at home so I just use the one at work when I have a spare minute. Hope everything goes well Tues. and enjoy your lunch with Carol Ann. Willie and I were just talking about getting together for lunch possibly in Abingdon. We will let you know when we decide on the date. Maybe Linda Kay will be able to meet us there--that won't be so far for her to drive. Give Homer a hug for me.

No posters? Viruses

by Sheila Alice

I have been hit twice in less than a month with some bad viruses. The first was terrible and the last was almost as bad. Both are malware or spyware and I had Avast (AVG) initially with the first infection, then had McAffee with this last one. I could still navigate some and write some emails with the last one, but it was hardly worth it. My computer went crazy. I constantly got notices that I had infections and that I must buy this particular software...AntiVirus Pro 2010. McAffee detected it but couldn't seem to remove it. I clicked on IE and got the control board. I clicked on something else and a bunch of fonts came up. My emails got deleted in midstream and I was so stressed that I could have killed the individual responsible for this if I could have gotten my hands on them.

This last was a fake alert trying to get you to buy their software. No matter where I went or what I did, it kept popping up. I couldn't restore to any date and couldn't make McAffee do anything, so I looked online (on my husband's computer) and found Stopzilla. So far everything is fine, but I'm scared to death to reboot my computer. ONe of the spyware programs is called WinDefender and they want you to download it! Don't! I don't recall that I ever did, but I could have, thinking it was from Windows.

I was wondering if others are getting these viruses. I thought I was well-protected!

Cross your fingers for me and be careful out there. It's a jungle!

Hunting Island

by Sheila Alice

Just returned from a week's camping at Hunting Island. We attended the Shrimp Festival there. Lots of good shrimp, good music and good company. No luck fishing or shrimping, though!

We had a wonderful time and intend to return to the Shrimp Fest again next year. We found dozens of shark teeth, many really large, some nice shells and sand dollars.

The weather was perfect except for one night when it rained a lot!

It sounds as though all is well with all of you. We're heading for John PenneKamp Coral Reef State Park in the spring.

Tent camping!

by Sheila Alice

Didn't think I had it in me, did you? Ha! It was a little rough with bugs, but not too bad. We intend to do a lot more in the future. The racoons are unbelievable! They can unzip coolers, tents, take the caps off bottles, toss a case of 24 cokes off your cooler, remove the bungee cords and unlatch the cooler. I figure they helped us get rid of about $25 worth of food. They even opened a Hershey bar with one tear and left me the wrapper. Too bad they didn't find the marshmallows and graham crackers, they could have had s'mores!

The shark tooth hunting was super. We found at least 200 and many of them large. We have a collection of shark teeth that probably weighs a few pounds and numbers in the thousands. Maybe someday we'll count them!

The music at the Shrimp Fest was great. We would have thought we had all died and gone to Heaven. Brown-eyed Girl, Lay Down Sally and Under the Broadwalk were among my favorites. They sounded as good as the originals.

Charles Lee!

by Sheila Alice

You haven't been around campers much lately, have you? We have elevated air beds. It's still a little rough getting up and down off them, but they sleep great, maybe better than our super, ultra nice, high-priced mattresses!

Campers also have water and electricity and most of the conveniences of home. The sand, bugs and raccoons are free, so one can't complain. Actually, one could stay cheaper in a nice motel room on the beach here than they could in a campground.

I started having varied visions of you two wallowing about in a pup tent. I had to ask, many years ago sleeping in a plush truck became camping.

At least you are outside, right? That's the main issue to me being outside the smells and lively dangers.

Re: Tent camping!

Hi Sheila,

If you and your husband ever head back toward the West and want to do some camping in Texas, New Mexico, Colorado, or Wyoming; let me know and you can camp at one of the properties that we have. We have (144ac) property on the Rio Grande near Del Rio for canoeing, 140' repeling cliff, rock climbing, or ATVing, we have a 1/2ac camping place in Timberon, New Mexico right at the National Forest for hiking or just relaxing, 8ac at Fort Garland, Co for a good staging point for lots of different activities, we have a 160ac place near Rawlins, Wyoming for hunting, hiking, and ATVing, we also have a 50ac place on Lake Spence at Robert Lee, Texas for boating, hunting, and ATVing (the lake is down 60' because of drought, so we have to use a boat ramp right now); so if you ever head this way again, and you want to let me know you are welcome to use them. Sorry I missed seeing you all on your last trip.

That sounds like you have every activity I would love except for hunting for shark teeth! Ha!

It will be a year or so before we try another cross country trip and camping would be great but a little hard when you have to keep moving. Maybe I'll still be able to camp when I retire, whenever that might be. Our son lives in Arizona so we have to make plenty of time to see him.

Wow, those properties sound super and a lot of fun. Do you do any camping or staying on any of them? Where do you live?

I was thinking I shouldn't have even asked because there really might be a code you have to go by and it might get you in trouble. I shouldn't have been so pushy. BUT, (as Charles Lee puts it) I think it would be a grand idea, too! It will probably be a while before we can come because we go back for chemo on Tuesday and he is going to feel like staying in the bed for a few days, so we will wait a week or two before we do another trip. Homer checking out a book....what a hoot!! Got any books on cute blonde cockers??? Homer definitely likes the girls! He really loves everyone. THANKS so much for the invitation and I will get back to you for details/lunch,etc.

THANKS again!! BTW, Carol Anne and I are planning to have a long lunch on Tuesday while poor Homer is under the needle. OUCH!!

"More Stuff"

by Willie

Joyce Ann, Morgan is having her best year ever! She has not said "I don't feel good" this first time this year. Of course, I ask her every day "how was your day" and all I ever get is "fine". She got her braces off a couple of weeks ago. She had been counting the days and wanted a T-bone, beef jerky and Grannie Smith apples. Needless to say, she has had all 3 with a caramel apple thrown in for good measure!

I finally got in touch with "Rotten Johnny" this morning. He is building a new house at the lake (bless his heart) and has been staying there. He says he is fine!

Charles Lee, you are having a "Senior moment". It has been a long time since Mr. Cummins was coach. Bobby Meade was coach for a while. It is now Rick Mullins. Remember the Mullins boys; Earl, Donnie, James Ott to name a few? Donnie married Patsy Buchanan and Rick is their son.

So glad for Morgan

by joyce ann

I'm sure I should remember, but what grade is she in? I know you were worried about her..... sounds like she has gained confidence in herself and enjoying taking part in new things and people. Josh loved school and I feel so lucky.....I don't know what I would have done if he hadn't. I was teaching in Damascus when he started school at Abingdon Elementary and he would have to get up and catch an early bus and he was always excited about it. He loved riding the bus, which I couldn't understand. He came home one day when he was in kindergarten and his shirt was torn. I asked him what happened and he said a high schooler jumped on a third grader and he had to help him out. My family just laughs when I say I can't figure out where he got that from?!?!?!?

by joyce ann

Homer is special and his resiliency is amazing. With all chemo, blood count is expected to go down and today I find out his is normal! I really don't think he knows he's sick. So far, the treatments haven't made him sick, but we don't know if it's doing any good for about 5 weeks. We'll see. Thanks for caring.

Josh is doing great, hasn't been sick for several months...knock on wood! He loves his job and doing really well, but works too much. Since holidays are very busy for Enterprise, we will probably be celebrating Thanksgiving and Christmas probably some time in October or January!! Wild, but I don't care, I'm going to put my tree up before too long so I'll be ready when he gets here. I have completely remodeled the house and Josh hasn't seen it yet, so I want it to especially warm and cozy when he comes home. I want Homer to see the lights, too....not sure he has ever seen the lights before. It is so neat to watch him stop and stare at things for the first time.

Yes, I love retirement, but I do miss the children and the relationship we had. I really get close to them. I miss my co-horts, but not all the paper work and silly stuff teachers have to do to satisfy the public. But I'm glad I taught all those years, I had a great time.

More than enough about me, how are you?????????

I'm not going anywhere,

by joyce ann

I just meant that I wasn't in Clintwood, but in Abingdon, which is an 1 1/2 hours away. It doesn't seem far compared to Bangkok.

Homer had his first chemo treatment last Tuesday at UT. He is also taking a powerful melanoma vaccine at the same time. I'm giving him immune shots every other day. I am thankful that he hasn't gotten sick from the chemo. On the second and third day he was very tired, and just wanted to sleep. He started playing with his toys Friday and today we took our usual long walk..... the temperature today was perfect for anything outside. Homer has kept his hearty appetite and I am so thankful. I had made up my mind that if the chemo made him really sick, I wasn't going to put him through it. But so far, he's doing better than I expected. The vets say the dogs have less side effects from chemo than humans.

I enjoy meeting other families and hear their pets stories. A cute curly-haired blonde cocker spaniel came in and a few weeks ago, she had a pace maker put in! She was there to have it adjusted. That was done at the UT Medical Center for humans! I saw lots of beautiful pets.

My cousin, Pres, insisted she go with me for support. (Homer's appointment was 9:30 and he wasn't through until 5:00). Her children went to school there and since she knew the campus so well, it gave us something to do. We ended up the cafeteria watching the college kids of today.
They really haven't changed that much.

Carol Anne and I have a plan to have a picnic on another appointment day and spend the day together. I don't know how many more treatments Homer will have.

Thanks for asking, Shelia B and please keep Homer in your prayers.

Happy Valley Tenness is a neighboring town

Just about 25 minutes up the road from Johnson City toward the N. C. border. I did not know Clintwood was playing them until I read the front page of our Sat. paper! Was glad to hear Clintwood won.

You bet,

we were there! It was played at home. You should see Sheila Fleming beam with pride. Her grandson, Trey, is the quarterback and the younger one, Gavin is getting a lot of playing time and he is only in the 9th grade.

Another surprise on the schedule is Shelby Valley, Ky. I don't know where in the world that is but it is away. Homecoming is Oct. 23 and we play Wise.

Homer and my virus

by Sheila Alice

Sorry to hear about Homer but I know you love him, JAnn, and will know what to do when and if the time comes.

My virus is gone along with over $300. It took that much and the poor guy spent about 4 days trying to get it off and finally had to purchase a super virus program. Glad I could help him pay for it! He couldn't give me a name for it, but called it monster spyware. I now have McAfee Antivirus on my computer after several years of using AVG or Avast free antivirus, which the computer guy called spyware, too. I didn't lose any of my files.

Now, you ask why didn't she just put that $300 toward a new computer. I thought about it, but I love my laptop and it does everything I need for a computer to do and has a 17 inch screen and it doesn't have Vista. I hate Vista. I also hate the newest version of Internet Explorer. I couldn't get anywhere with it and deleted it from my computer the same day I downloaded it.

I'm happy now. I was so upset that I would lose my recent roadtrip pictures that I hadn't backed up. You can bet I'll be backing up my pictures now.

We're planning a trip to Hunting Island next month. Any of you have roadtrips or plans for weekend jaunts? Best not to post the dates since you don't know who's watching and waiting to break into your house.

Hope HOmer does well and all of you are enjoying cooler weather. I hear there's a big storm off the coast of Virginia, went right by us.

Signing off as Happy Sheila in Surfland!

Just returned from Virginia Beach where Joyce, Anna, Cole and I competed in a half marathon. The old boy here was slow but still finished 14,758 among over 22,000 runners. Not bad for a 61 year old boy I am thinking!!!

Hope everyone has had a great summer.

Homer

by joyce ann

I wish I had better news, but drs. think the melanoma has spread to his lungs by studying his exrays. So far, other organs are not affected, so they feel hopeful, but very cautious. He had a melanoma shot today that has been very effective in alot of other dogs. He gets one a month for 4 months and then probably start chemo after that. That scared me because I don't want to put him through misery and see how long we can keep him alive.....to me quality is worth more than quanity. But his doctor said that in 95% of dogs having chemo has had NO side effects, in fact I saw a couple today and they had no trouble at all. I felt encouraged by that, but really no one knows how this will end or when. Homer doesn't know he is sick and I've got to be the same with him that I have always been. If I get upset, he will too, and that's the worst thing could happen.
My heart aches, but all this is about Homer and I am going to do everything I can to make him happy and secure.

My BIG thanks to Carol Anne who found my car and came looking for me. We sat and talked for quite awhile and reassured me that Homer was in the best place. She said that people come from California to UT for treatment for their dogs. It was great talking with her and I hope we can get together when I go back to UT. She knows so much about UT and the people there. THANKS, CAROL ANNE!

Thanks everyone, I appreciate all your kind words and please keep Homer in your prayers. I will keep you updated.

Margaret, thanks for your message, I miss you on the forum and so glad that grandbaby is doing so well. It's time to retire and play with that baby!! She won't be little for long.

Carol Anne, it was good to see your post. Haven't heard from you in a long time. Glad to hear that you did retire and are enjoying it. Bad virus

by Sheila Alice

I got a bad, mean, ugly virus last Friday. I may have lost a few hundred pictures, a lot of information. I did have a flash drive backup that I did a few months ago, but I should have backed it up recently.

On Friday evening I went to three sites...this board, the Clintwood Connection and recipeczar. I wanted to make tortilla crusted talapia. I guess that'll teach me. Anyway, at that point, I got a virus notice and took the recommended action of moving it to chest. My computer would do nothing. I could get into nothing, couldn't even start it up in safe mode. On Saturday morning, I could it to the experts who said they'd clean it up and have it back to me in a few hours. They called a couple of hours later and told me it had a lot of viruses, said they'd be about one more hour. Now about the only places I go are to shockwave, boxerjam games, the forums, google, recipe and sewing sites and network news sites. I got a call a few hours later and the guy told me I had a whopper of a virus and they had tried for 3 hours to get it off and it would be Tuesday before I got my computer back. I really think it's beyond fixing because the virus is so bad, but we'll wait and see. I lost any pictures you sent recently. I'm posting on Cecil's computer. I'll let you know when and if I get my computer back up.

This may seem silly to some but several of you seem to have an interest in my dog, Homer and his story, well we have a new chapter. He has just had his 2nd melanoma surgery in 7 months and it appears drs. didn't get it all. I am taking him to a specialist at UT on Tuesday to see if anything can be done. This doctor is famous in this field and I'm hoping he can give us some good news. Homer is a mightly special dog and my best buddy.....I was hoping that he and I could grow older together. He doesn't know anything is wrong with him and contiues to have his same personality. Hopefully with all the new procedures, Homer can overcome this. Would you please keep him in your thoughts and prayers. I wish you could meet him, you would love him, too. THanks, my friends.... and Homer says hey...

Which Doc are you seeing there? Your dog could not be in a better place. Folks come from all over the US to seek treatment. My dogs go there if needed and most Knoxville vets use the vet school for lab work that cannot be performed in the office.

Hello, Carol Anne

by joyce ann

My vets here highly recomended UT for cancer in dogs and UNC at Chapel Hill....they say they are the best on the east coast. Since UT is closer, I think the vets here know them better. I don't know the doctor's name, but I have done some research on the vet school and found the Oncology Dept. I know I will love the place. My vets here have already talked with UT and told me about the all the options that might work for Homer. I am anxious for them to see him.

Homer had a lens put in his left eye at VT about 2 months ago and I couldn't get over the wonderful place it is and the wonderful people there.

Thanks so much, Carol, for your interest....don't you work at UT?? What department are you in?

To Ms Bea

by Ginger

Glad your parents are liking to live at the Laurels in Norton. I took my mother there last year to look around in case she ever has to move, instead of going into a nursing home. We were very impressed! Beautiful there, and the staff were very nice. Hope your dad does ok about his driving. I know what that is like. My stepdad, Vic Molinary, before he passed away, he got to where he would stop in the middle of the road down near the hospital and just stand in the middle of the road and look around, holding up traffic, hit a lady, (really only tapped her, but scared us to death) over at Food Ciry driving in the parking lot, drove on home, not even knowing or remembering that he had been out! Then mother (who was a stoke victim at the time and was on a walker) had been trying to hide the keys from him, and he would find them, and go out to the car parked on front street and take off, had a couple wrecks there in front of the big 2 story house. My mother even went down those concrete steps one day trying to get to the car to jerk out the keys to keep him from driving. We finally got him into a driving class and then they told him there he should not be driving. He was just shy 2 months of 90 when he passed away many years ago.

I remember having to feed him and help him to the bathroom and trying to help mother out, and he was a stubborn old man, but we all loved him. He loved and treated my mother very well. She is still living by herself in a nice double wide there in power house hollow. Still on her own but can tell she is slowing down a lot. Thank God, she had brains enough when she was about 85 to decide not to have her drivers liscence renewed and not drive anymore. We sure had a time out of Vic though.

Good luck with your dad. It sure is hard to take the keys away from someone who thinks they can still drive and drive good!

Agree with you Sheila Alice, No. 1, that 4th grade class we had stays as the most memorable year, what a beautiful lady and wonderful ability to teach without the pain. Remember the flutes??

John Short is perhaps No. 2, fantastic guy.

Ella Jean was impressive with her passion for math, and the ability to keep your attention, with her you knew better than to start crossing the line of indifference. Better to march to her beat.

We got a Christmas card from her every year I guess because Mother taught with her. It was always some kind of needlework on the front and it was always the first card of the season we received. I still have some of them.
Her attitude was just different from most teachers. I was lucky to have her in 4th and 5th grade. I remember she had the most unusual red pens.....I never saw another teacher use one like hers.

Well, it's after 1:30 in the morning and I've just finished tearing wall paper off of my bedroom walls. Goodness I've worked all day....that stuff will drive you crazy!

Tearing down wallpaper

by Ginger

JA. have done the wallpaper tearing it down, It is a BIG headache. I need three of my bathroons done right now. Wallpaper is so out of the interior design right now(at least the old kind I have that is at least 12 years old) I helped my daughter-in-law take down three bedrooms of wallpaper when they bought their first (older) home in Bristol. It took us 3 days to get the one in the master b/r down. It had a brown paper backing to it. Had never seen any like that. We had to steam it, scrape it, cuss it. It was terrible. Really made me hate wallpaper at the time.

I would rather hire someone to take mine down this time. It may be wishful thinking. If too expensive, I may look at it a while longer or just paint over it. That is what Millie did in her baths. Looks pretty good.

I don't envy you but feel sorry for you to have to do it. Are you going to put more wallcoving up or paint?

I know what you mean

by joyce ann

I had taken the wallpaper off my kitchen and bathroom downstairs and it wasn't bad, but it was terrible in my bedroom because it covered the 4 walls completely. In some places it wasn't a problem and then other places I didn't think I would ever get it off. I painted my total downstairs myself, but I gave out by the time I tackled the upstairs bedroom and bath. My painter did an outstanding job getting the glue off with a sander.... I didn't have to wash it after the paper came off.

My remodeling started last Nov. and I'm heading upstairs this morning to try and get my furniture back where it belongs. I have lived here 26 years and have done very little. I couldn't afford it while Josh was in school, but I have done way more than I planned. The man that built my house...he and his wife are wonderful friends of mine. (They threw Charles Lee a party once.) She is also a decorator and SO amazing about finding things really cheap and making them new again. I've used her husband's work crew while building has been slowed, and those carpenters are the best I have ever seen. I could go on and on the things they done for me and much cheaper than I could have ever done it.

I must tell you the wildest thing I have done to my house...... I painted my kitchen cabinets RED! They are a barn red with beige tile countertops and I love it! Thank goodness it's all about finished. My wonderful painting crew let yesterday for the last time. (Not only did they paint, but they fixed my computer, got rid of some bees, fixed a broken bed, cut out some dead limbs of one of my trees, hung my curtain rods, and I could go on and on. All of my friends just aren't able to climb and do all this and it was wonderful to have some help!! Seems like getting my furniture back, cleaning the windows, etc. is going to be easy. It's been a long haul with some really funny stories, but I can't wait to finally relax like retired people are suppose to do!

I just jumped on the web when I heard about Jimmy Vanover. Linda, I am so sorry to hear this. Please give the family my best. He was alway a good friend to dad and mom.

Ella Jean is at The Laurels, 5635 Big Stone Gap Drive, Norton, VA 24273. This is an assisted living located right behind KMART in what I would have thought was Wise.

Anyway, mom and dad have been up there since May and they love it. Also Jettie Crabtree (Mackie and Danny's mom), Elvie Moore (Jane's mom), and Minnie Dotson (James, Doug, Delmar, and Connie's mom).

Just wanted to pass the address along. Hope everyone is well and happy birthday and best wishes to all that I have missed for the last 2 to 3 years.

Mr. Dotson

by Sheila B.

Hey Bea,
Good to hear from you again on the forum. I had heard your Mom and Dad had moved to the Laurels and that they were very satisfied. I am so happy for them. I was afraid your Dad would not lik. I miss seeing him--I would sometimes see him at the postoffice--he always gave me a piece of candy. Your Mom and Dad are such nice people.

That was nice

by Bea

of you to say. Mom and Dad are doing the best and making the best of a bad situation. Dad would be right back in Clintwood at home if he could turn back time. Mom cannot wait on him and they won't keep anyone with them. We have tried and tried to hire enough nursing and sitters but mom and dad will tell them behind our backs that they won't need them etc. In other words, they cut their hours back so much that we couldn't keep anyone. Being at the Laurels, they still have their privacy and someone to look out for their safety and medicine.

Plus, we know daddy don't need to be driving. We just don't have the courage to take the car away from him yet. Trying to take care of one I think would be easier than two. They play off of each other and believe me, we all have to gang up on them sometimes. It's not easy for any of us right now.

Thanks for thinking of us.

Edna Coe and Ella Jean

by Sheila Alice

Again, I had a long message and lost it when my battery died. I wanted to say that Edna Coe was such a vibrant teacher. She gave us a lot of homework and she treated us with respect. She was a good teacher.

I also mentioned several other teachers that taught me a lot. Among them were John Short and Goldie Crabtree. I remember Fern Short with love even though I only had her a few days. At the top of the list is Jessie Sutherland. She was superb!

As for Ella Jean, I know she was a favorite for many of you and I wanted to update you on her. She and my brother were divorced many years before he died. Ella is in a facility in Big Stone Gap. It's either assited living or independent living. She was diagnosed with dementia(probably Alzheimer's Disease) and can no longer live at home by herself. She seems to be doing well. I try to send her a card every few weeks. I'm sure she would love to get cards from any of you. I'll try to find the address and post it. She was previously in Heritage Hall at Big Stone Gap so I don't know the name and address of the new facility. She is now Ella Jean Crabtree and no longer goes by the name Davis. She may not remember you but it would be nice to remember her with a card.

by Willie

I missed one because I was too quick to answer cause I thought I was doing so well!

SAD, looks like our forum has been discovered by a bunch of people wanting to sell us stuff. Do they know me? How did they know I need to lose weight?

The picture is beautiful. I have never heard of this island, is it near you?

I don't know how they knew I needed to lose weight, either. I certainly wouldn't tell them if I was face to face with them! Ha!

Hunting Island is in Beaufort, SC. We spent a few days there last fall and we're going back next month for a week of camping. It's a beautiful place. It's not too far from Pixon's place. We went crabbing and had a feast on crabs, but I doubt we'll cook any this year...too much work for so little meat.
