Of course it was a horrible experiance! Regardless of how a parent 'hears' of their child's sexual abuse/s it is a very difficult moment. I'm wondering Angie...what was your daughter's response to your reading of her private journal? not that it matters of course, I was just curious! I believe most every parent at some time or another reads something they are not supposed to read. If your reading her journal has brought about actions of keeping her safe from the perpetrator as well as starting her therapy sessions then of course it was a 'good' thing!!
Personally speaking, I don't believe a parent must read their child's journals/diaries to know what going on with them. Not to say that those who do read such are wrong...just saying it really isn't required to remain 'informed' with regards to your child/ren.
