OK, no more prevaricating, time to make a firm date for an informal get-together for those cloud-appreciators who fancy a meeting under Devon skies:

I propose a meeting at The Turf Lock Hotel, on the Exe estuary, on Saturday 12th September at midday

The following links should take you to Turf's own site and a map for getting there:

http://www.turfpub.net/index.php

http://www.turfpub.net/content/Turf_Directions.pdf

The pub is well-known for it's good food and wonderful location (CM, I hope you'll back me up on this!) and is one of the very few pubs in the country that cannot be reached by car (the last mile has to be walked/cycled/canal-boated, except for disabled drivers/passengers).

The Exe estuary is wide and open, attracting twitchers from all over to enjoy it's bird-life and, I hope, cloudspotters to enjoy the skies above it (often fast-changing, owing to the Atlantic weather systems that chase each other in across Cornwall and Devon). Below is a taster:

If we can just gather a few enthusiasts together, who knows, we might even be able to start planning a day conference for later in the autumn.....
Hope you can make it - see you there!

Great news Gini, There is a good chance I can join you too.

Good views to be had and a great little pub for a get together.

Here is an almost cloud free pic I took walking back to the car from the Turfpub last time we met.

Having just moved to Dartmoor I've been amazed by the huge variety of clouds here and especially how quickly they change.

I'd love to meet some fellow local cloudspotters so will hopefully make it along to the get-together.

Will someone have a sign with a cloud on it so I can easily cloudspotter-spot?!

Glad to hear you may be able to get to the Turf Lock on the 12th September, Simon - and I'm glad you're enjoying Devon's wonderful skies (whereabouts on Dartmoor have you settled?).

I will make sure there is some kind of cloudy sign indicating where fellow spotters are to be found (or I'll wear something cloudy) - if it's a fine day, I'll be outside on a bench facing the approach to the pub over the lock bridge, if wet, I'll be in the room to the right of the bar.

Other Westcountry cloudspotters - please note the above!

I'd really love to join in with this but I am based in Newquay so it's a bit too far for me.
Any news about events or fellow cloudspotters in cornwall?

would love to find out. thanks,

Sept 12th - next Saturday - meeting reminder

Hi all,

Just a quick reminder that I'll be at Turf Lock, at the seaward end of the Exeter Canal (link on a previous post), at 12 noon next Saturday to share some clouds with anyone who can/would like to join me there.

I've put in an order for varied cumulus, mixed with enough sunshine for some late summer warmth and a few showers over the distant hills to lend interest (but not travelling towards us) - doubt very much if anyone was listening when I put my order in, but it would be just nice to meet any cloud appreciators who can make it, even if we have to huddle inside watching rain coursing down the windows!!

.......it isn't!
For anyone able to make it to Turf Lock, Exeter, tomorrow at noon, it looks like we will have relentlessly blue skies - just as it was when CM visited earlier in the year! And yet, when I organised a staff 'do' there at the end of July last year, it bucketed down! Oh the vagaries of the English weather.

Looking forward to meeting anyone who can make it - but if no-one turns up, I shall just enjoy a toasted sandwich and the Saturday Guardian in the sunshine.....
