I originally posted in Plastic Pix, but I think it is more appropriate for this group build. Sorry for the double post.

Here is the start of the XF4U-3 project using parts from the 1/48th scale Tamiya F4U-1D and Special Hobby F2G SUPER CORSAIR.

A while back I wanted to model the Special Hobby (SH) F2G with the flaps down, so I combined the wings and rear center section of the Tamiya kit with the forward wing center section with the F2G intakes of the SH kit. (Another article in the near future.) I had the parts left over for the 2 kits, fuselage and forward center wing section of the Tamiya kit and the wings of the SH kit, and I didn't want to waste them. So I combined these parts to make the XF4U-3B. The botttom wing/fuselage center sections didn't line up as well as the F2G, but it doesn't matter since it will be covered by the large turbo supercharger fairing.

Top - wing for the F2G and bottom - wing for the XF4U-3B. (Note the different colors of gray plastic.) I had to detail the wheel wells with Evergreen styrene strip since the SH kit has no detail.

After getting information from fellow HSers, thanks again guys, I started the XF4U-3B. I have enough information to do the front intake scoop now. The rear of the fairing and exhaust area still needs more information to do accurately. (If anyone has any info about the exhaust of the XF4U-3, I'd really appreciate it.) The scoop is made of 3 pieces of 1/8" black acrylic sheet that I laser cut and glued together.

I cut the lower cowl flaps off before I realized that the XF4U-3B did not have the top flaps permanently fixed in the down position. I could have rotated the cowl ring 180 degrees. Oh well.

HyperScale's Group Build Guidelines

The objective of this Group Build is to encourage as many modellers as possible to build their kits and share their progress via words and photos on this Forum.

You are welcome to post general construction tips or relevant reference information and photos to this Forum too.

This Group Build will feature US Navy and Marines aircraft models depicted during the period 1940-1960.

  1. This Group Build will run until 31 December, 2009.

  2. Build as many kits as you like.

  3. Conversions, aftermarket and scratchbuilding are all permitted.

  4. Any markings are acceptable, as long as the model is finished in any US Navy / Marines blue scheme (e.g. Blue Gray / Light Gray, three-colour or Gloss Sea Blue).

  5. Document your progress and do a write-up on your build - where did you have trouble, what improvements did you make, what markings did you choose and why? It would be GREAT if everyone would do a writeup and submit it to HyperScale as a Feature Article.
