Response to Impressive ...

My technique is pretty much limited to 1/72 scale; for larger things, a smooth core, skinned in thin plastic, is preferable.

To get the outline shape, I fasten (usually with double-face tape) a guide to a rectangle of sheet, cut a bit over-sized,and then trim down, with knife and file, to match. The guide will usually be a photocopy of a reliable drawing, but in this case, I used the kit parts as a guide.

The airfoil section is filed in with emery sticks (I use very heavy grit 'salon boards' sold in the nails section). A line is marked at the high point of the airfoil, usually about a third of the way back from the leading edge. Hold the stick at an appropriate angle and file away; it will take a good deal of time. The 'salon boards' have a soft core, which acts to lend a bit of curve to what you are doing more or less automatically.

Ribs are put in by a combination of light scraping with the curved edge of a No. 10 blade, and sand-paper, in grits ranging from 220 up to 600. Rather than coil the sand-paper, I fold small swatches over on themselves several time: the fold will have a rounded surface, and there will be a ridge above it that is easy to grip. The point is not to gouge deep valleys, but to leave raised ridges, so you do not want to over-do this: use a light hand.

HyperScale's Group Build Guidelines

The objective of this Group Build is to encourage as many modellers as possible to build their kits and share their progress via words and photos on this Forum.

You are welcome to post general construction tips or relevant reference information and photos to this Forum too.

This Group Build will feature WWI Aircraft Kits.

  1. This Group Build will run until 31 December, 2011.

  2. Build as many kits as you like.

  3. Conversions, aftermarket and scratchbuilding are all permitted.

  4. Any markings are acceptable.

  5. Document your progress and do a write-up on your build - where did you have trouble, what improvements did you make, what markings did you choose and why? It would be GREAT if everyone would do a writeup and submit it to HyperScale as a Feature Article.
