After much hand wringing and soul searching I decided to go ahead and try the French four-color camouflage. That's the nice thing about cheap old Heller kits--it's not like I'm trashing the family jewels if I mess up.
So, first I primed the whole thing with Mr Surfacer 1000, painted the struts Gunze gloss black, then masked and did some pre-shading:
I then used various Gunze Mr Hobby aqueous paints, sorta picking and choosing and mixing until I got colors that said to me "French", held my breath, closed my eyes, and sprayed away. Les results:
There's still some touch-ups to do, and I have no clue how authentic a job I may have done, but at least there are no drips, runs or other boo-boos, and that's half the battle for me.
The engine cowl and wheel spats will be natural metal. This is counter to the instructions, but since I never get hate mail from museum curators I feel safe.
Thanks for looking!
