It's been a while, but I've marked a mountain of essays and finished a Hurricane and Sptfire for the Airfix group, so I've finally got back to the Fireball. Here's where I'm up to:

Interior parts assembled:

The insert at the back that's supposed to fill in the area behind the pilot's seat is too small, so I've just glued some card to it to bulk it out. it won't be very visible because that part of the canopy is solid. I've also glued the nose wheel well in place underneath, with a bit of plastic card for the right spacing. The block of white plastic will have an etched console attached to it later - much easier than trying to get the tiny contact area of the brass to attach.

The wingroot intakes are see-through, so I scratched some simple grilles with card and stretched sprue:

The wing roots are going to be fun. here's the assembled wing offered up to the fuselage:

Nothing a bit of card won't fix, but it will take a little care around the intakes (and my inserts) to keep the area looking good.

The engine is nothing to write home about, but not a lot can be seen anyway:

Next step is to paint up the interior and fit the etch. Then I can assemble the fuselage and add the wings. Then the fun begins.

Cheers,

Regarding the wing Andrew, not sure if you are looking for advice but i'd get it centered on the fuselage saddle, make sure the wing centre section is perfectly flat ( no anhedral) and guesstimate the amount of gap on either side. I'd laminate a piece of Evergreen .010 or .015 strip to each wing root with thin CA, carve away most of the excess, and then sand down the remainder with a rigid backed sanding stick so its flush with the edge of the upper wing half and you get a nice sharp corner.

Anyway, that's what I'd do. Again, just a suggestion. I'd also consider cutting the engine away from the fuselage and building it up as a separate unit, but thats perhaps more work than you want to deal with.

Thanks David - yes, plastic card for the wing roots.

I won't use CA though. the plastic is a bit soft and I think CA sets too hard for it to be the best solution here. I'll pack the joints with card and then run liquid cement in. It's worked well for me in the past.

HyperScale's Group Build Guidelines

The objective of this Group Build is to encourage as many modellers as possible to build their kits and share their progress via words and photos on this Forum.

You are welcome to post general construction tips or relevant reference information and photos to this Forum too.

This Group Build will feature WWI Aircraft Kits.

  1. This Group Build will run until 31 December, 2011.

  2. Build as many kits as you like.

  3. Conversions, aftermarket and scratchbuilding are all permitted.

  4. Any markings are acceptable.

  5. Document your progress and do a write-up on your build - where did you have trouble, what improvements did you make, what markings did you choose and why? It would be GREAT if everyone would do a writeup and submit it to HyperScale as a Feature Article.
