After much hand wringing and soul searching I decided to go ahead and try the French four-color camouflage. That's the nice thing about cheap old Heller kits--it's not like I'm trashing the family jewels if I mess up.

So, first I primed the whole thing with Mr Surfacer 1000, painted the struts Gunze gloss black, then masked and did some pre-shading:

I then used various Gunze Mr Hobby aqueous paints, sorta picking and choosing and mixing until I got colors that said to me "French", held my breath, closed my eyes, and sprayed away. Les results:

There's still some touch-ups to do, and I have no clue how authentic a job I may have done, but at least there are no drips, runs or other boo-boos, and that's half the battle for me.

The engine cowl and wheel spats will be natural metal. This is counter to the instructions, but since I never get hate mail from museum curators I feel safe.

Thanks for looking!

Stuart

The paint colors and pattern are dead, solid, perfect(a golf term).

I wanna see this one done. It will look gorgeous with those red, white, and blu French Roundels on it. Attaboy! Adios, Lary.

Field Artillery brings dignity to what otherwise might be merely a vulgar brawl.

Thanks, Larry! The decals...

look kind of iffy. There was a piece of "protective" tissue paper on them that was stuck to them. I probably should have dampened it to remove it, but did I? Nooooo. I pulled it off and may have damaged the decals. We'll see. I'm still debating even at this stage about whether to paint at least the roundels on. Always some little drama around here!
