Thought I’d post a thought on great films, for no particular reason, except that Andy’s life was about the development and performance of characters. So I thought I’d expand that concept to the cinema.
What makes a great film GREAT? In my opinion, it’s (in a phrase) character development. Great films give you a “view” into the soul and mind of a highly aberrant or interesting character (be he a sociopath, a psychopath, a psychotic, a Mafia don, or a pure genius) that you could get in no other way. Here are my favorite films of all time (and the character each allow us to view, in depth):
Apocalypse Now (Colonel Walter A. Kurtz-genius/monster)
Reservoir Dogs (view into the soul of each of the “dogs,” especially Mr. Blond-Michael Madsen)
True Romance (especially the Christopher Walken character AND the James Golfini character)
Godfather Trilogy (Don Corleone, Michael Corleone)
Scarface (Tony Montana-soulless megalomaniac)
Silence of the Lambs (Hannibal Lector-genius/monster)
Being There (Chancy Gardner-Kaufmanlike man/child)

Sorry, Andy, "Heartbeeps" just missed making the list, I'm afraid.
