Here's a portion of another email from the guy who's email I posted below about doing the Mighty Mouse skit in school:
"Now, since last year, around the holidays I get right excited and saddened at the same time, I went to see Man on the Moon on Dec.24th at the matinee showing with
a guy I'm no longer friends with. I just knew Carrey was in it and I loved the guy so I went.
We were the only people in the theatre and then the lights went down early, I could see the projectionist liked the movie as much as the movie critics. It started out and the movie projector was screwing up and doing the exact thing Kaufman arranged to do on his special, only it was happening on Carrey's monolouge in the opening minutes.
Well we came out and we both had loved it, he said he never saw Carrey act so good and I had forgotten it was Carrey at all. We walked home in the thick snow
discussing the film and how much I liked it and the next night I went with another friend and skipped Christmas Mass. The theatre was empty again <go
figure> and I sopped up every word that all the actor's said about Kaufman. I was quite confused when the screen didn't screw up at the first this time around though."
His letter made me laugh, but it made me sad at the same time. Remember how much excitement, electricity, and 'Kaufman magic' there was in the air last year at this time? I miss that. A lot.
I wish we could figure out how to revive that "feeling."
But until we do, we'll just have to keep that magic alive in our hearts.
The very best of holiday cheer to all. Especially Holly who has done so much to keep that magic alive, and to Mary Anne who keeps me laughing, and to all of the others here who check in here to pay tribute to Andy Kaufman.
And Andy, wherever you are, thanks for being Andy. The world is a better place because of you. Happy Hanukah.
