I shall run my fingers over his face...

by Holly

Word has it that Andy's face cast, his "lifecast" is going up for auction on Ebay, and it isn't going to be just one of them, either. The guy who has it knows how to make more...I don't have andything in writing, just word of mouth, but it's still exciting!!

Record of the Year

by Don

Well deserved! Congrats U2, Bono.

It's a Beautiful Day

The heart is a bloom, shoots up through the stony ground
But there’s no room no space to rent in this town
You’re out of luck, and the reason that you had to care,
The traffic is stuck, and you’re not moving anywhere.
You thought you’d found a friend to take you out of this place
Someone you could lend a hand in return for grace

It’s a beautiful day, the sky falls
And you feel like it’s a beautiful day
It’s a beautiful day
Don’t let it get away

You’re on the road and you’ve got no destination
You’re in the mud, in the maze of her imagination
You love this town even if it doesn’t ring true
You’ve been all over and it’s been all over you

It’s a beautiful day
Don’t let it get away
It’s a beautiful day
Don’t let it get away

Touch me, take me to that other place
Teach me, I know I’m not a helpless case

See the world in green and blue
See China right in front of you
See the canyons broken by cloud
See the tuna fleets clearing the sea out
See the Bedouin fires at night
See the oil fields at first light
See the bird with a leaf in her mouth
After the flood all the colours came out

It was a beautiful day
Beautiful day
Don’t let it get away

Touch me, take me to that other place
Teach me, I know I’m not a helpless case

What you don’t have you don’t need it now
What you don’t know you can feel it somehow
What you don’t have you don’t need it now
You don’t need it now, you don’t need it now

Beautiful day

Oh Good!

by Mary Anne

I'm glad to hear that someone cool like U2 won. I don't have the patience for the Grammys. You have to sit through so much garbage before the good stuff comes on.

I saw U2 years ago when they first came out, and their only hit was "I Will Follow". I always danced to that song at the clubs, as well as "Sunday Bloody Sunday".

Thanks for posting the song Don. I have to catch up with my U2 ... I said it before, and I'll say it again, so many bands, so little time!

Are you familiar with the Residents, the avante-garde band from SF? I saw them last week, and wow, what a performance!

Hi Mary Anne! Long time... No I 'm not, but if you like 'em, I'll have to check them out.

I was glad to see U2 come through, also. I've been a long time major fan, but had thought they had peaked with "Joshua Tree" clear back in the 80's. But after hearing "All That You Can't Leave Behind," I'm reconsidering. 'Listen' to these lyrics from cut 4 (Walk On):

And love is not the easy thing
The only baggage you can bring...
And love is not the easy thing....
The only baggage you can bring
Is all that you can't leave behind

And if the darkness is to keep us apart
And if the daylight feels like it's a long way off
And if your glass heart should crack
And for a second you turn back
Oh no, be strong

Walk on, walk on
What you got they can’t steal it
No they can’t even feel it
Walk on, walk on...
Stay safe tonight

You're packing a suitcase for a place none of us has been
A place that has to be believed to be seen
You could have flown away
A singing bird in an open cage
Who will only fly, only fly for freedom

Walk on, walk on
What you've got they can't deny it
Can’t sell it, can’t buy it
Walk on, walk on
Stay safe tonight

And I know it aches
And your heart it breaks
And you can only take so much
Walk on, walk on

Home… hard to know what it is if you’ve never had one
Home… I can’t say where it is but I know I'm going home
That's where the hurt is

I know it aches
How your heart it breaks
And you can only take so much
Walk on, walk on

Leave it behind
You've got to leave it behind
All that you fashion
All that you make
All that you build
All that you break
All that you measure
All that you steal
All this you can leave behind
All that you reason
All that you sense
All that you speak
All you dress up
All that you scheme…

Wild Horses

I thought I was the only one who loved that song! I would put it on "repeat play" for an hour at a time when I was on the lifecycle and stairstepper at the health club. Great song.

Sorry I forgot to sign my name on the last one.

I'm not so sure Bono's voice is holding up like when he was 25, but his lyrics are getting a lot nore reflective. Mid-life whatever. I really like the new CD.

If you have a recommendation of a CD by the Residents, I'll give it a listen.

Aloha, M.A.

I generally make it a point to miss that whole spectacle...

The Residents are awesome...they have a little CD-ROM called "The Resident's Freakshow" which is delightful, and veddy worth checking out.

Review: "The Real Andy Kaufman" Video

by

Spent tonight/this morning watching and re-watching that, instead of doing what I should have been doing, namely sleeping.

I recommend it. Highly.

There's a certain amount of what I consider to be "staple material" or "just good clean fun" - the wrestling, Elvis...but almost everything is a performance you've never seen before. There are also interviews with some of Andy's friends, which are good but not great.

However, most of it is great.

I got about six of my questions about Andy answered simply by watching this video, and getting a look at a different performance of a bit that I had only seen done one way. For instance, I now know for SURE what is going on with "Oklahoma."

The vid contains a wonderfully candid interview with Andy, taken by a friend of his after a show. Andy is kind of tired, and not putting up a front for most of the interview. Veddy interesting stuff. He talks about what he hopes a performance will be like, and his dissatisfaction with the audience's response that night.

Also not to be missed - some of the best conga playing I have ever seen andywhere is on this tape. Andy is an incredbly musical guy. His hands are just a blur. (The box incorrectly bills the type of drum as a "bongo." What do they know?)

It's interesting to see him do some of the familiar things, but not as well as you're used to seeing them...for instance, he sings "Friendly World," but his voice isn't in top form. He is off pitch in some parts, and sings on the consonants instead of the vowels - he knows better, but it's at the end of a gruelling hour and forty five minute show, so I guess we can forgive him, eh?

AND, this video contains that oft-talked about but rarely seen footage of the time when Andy invites his whole family up onstage to recreate the little anecdotes they tell around the dinner table! Totally worth it - and the audience, of course, hates it!

There has got to be something veddy wrong with me, that I watch something totally wonderful like this, and still wind up feeling some sadness. I don't know why I can't just be happy that Andy is such a genius.

Hope I didn't give away too much in this review. If andybody wants to talk about this video in detail, give me an email. Lots of special thanks to gilda, for setting me on the path that led to my getting this amazing video.

A quick post upon my return

by Holly

Hi!

Just got back last night from interactive "Evita" in LA - and shall return there on Friday morning, for more "Evita-ing!"

I went for three nights, and won two first prizes and a second prize! (I got the DVD of "Evita" and some tickets to a Madonna convention...and after that, I told them that I'd be happy to enter the nightly contest, because I worked hard on my costume and wanted for people to see it - but I really couldn't accept any more prizes. So the second time I got first prize, I gave the DVD to the second place winner - and it was her anniversary, too, so it made it even more special for her!

--------------------

Here's the bad news:

Mom was sick in LA on Friday with the stomach flu (which she thought was food poisoning.) As soon as I got back into San Diego last night, I started throwing up, as well.

Throwing up is my biggest irrational phobia in the whole world. It really frightens me.

------------------

So now, although I'm emotionally happy, I'm physically sick and body-achy, and rather than answering all the emails that came in, I thought I'd just post here and let everyone know.

PLEASE send me your good thoughts and vibes!! I hate being sick. AND I have to get well in time for Friday...

Lots of love to you all!

MOTM - Special Birthday Edition!

by

Hello, Friends In Andy!

And HAPPY ANDY'S BIRTHDAY!!!

This MOTM (Message Of The Moment) is brought to you in honor of our friend Andy Kaufman's 52nd birthday! I hope you all have a wonderful and magical
seventeenth of January!

---------------------------------------

In honor of this auspicious occasion, I'm reprinting an essay from Kahlil Gibran's "The Prophet" on Freedom. Andy is one of the freest people I have yet seen -
and I, personally, give much of the credit to the discipline with which he practiced his meditation. It is my belief that he found the deeper understanding of
Freedom that is described by Gibran in the passage below.

"At the city gate and by your firesides I have seen you prostrate yourself and worship your own freedom,
Even as slaves humble themselves before a tyrant and praise him though he slays them.

Ay, in the grove of the temple and in the shadow of the citadel I have seen the freest among you wear their freedom as a yoke and a handcuff.
And my heart bled within me; for you can only be free when even the desire of seeking freedom becomes a harness to you, and when you cease to speak of
freedom as a goal and a fulfillment.

You shall be free indeed when your days are not without a care nor your nights without a want and a grief,
But rather when these things girdle your life and yet you rise above them naked and unbound.

And how shall you rise beyond your days and nights unless you break the chains which you at the dawn of your understanding have fastened around your noon
hour?
In truth, that which you call freedom is the strongest of these chains, though its links glitter in the sun and dazzle your eyes.
And what is it but fragments of your own self you would discard that you may become free?
If it is an unjust law you would abolish, that law was written with your own hand upon your own forehead
You cannot erase it by burning your law books nor by washing the foreheads of your judges, though you pour the sea upon them.
And if it is a despot you would dethrone, see first that his throne erected within you is destroyed.

For how can a tyrant rule the free and the proud, but for a tyrrany in their own freedom and a shame in their own pride?
And if it is a care you would cast off, that care has been chosen by you rather than imposed upon you.
And if it is a fear you would dispel, the seat of that fear is in your heart and not in the hand of the feared.

Verily all things move within your being in constant half embrace, the desired and the dreaded, the repugnant and the cherished, the pursued and that which you
would escape.
Tese things move within you as lights and shadows in pairs that cling.
And when the shadow fades and is no more, the light that lingers becomes a shadow to another light.
And thus your freedom when it loses its fetters becomes itself the fetter of a greater freedom."

-------------------------------

Nota Bene: Just because I'm reprinting this essay here, does NOT mean that I have mastered the concept myself! *_*

I hope you all remain well until next we speak!

Take Care!

Tourette Syndrome

by Don

Tourette Syndrome (TS) is a neurological condition characterized by involuntary movements and vocalizations known as tics. You may be familiar with TS from television characters who suddenly shout obscenities or other inappropriate remarks. This unusual behavior, called coprolalia, actually occurs only in rare cases, probably in less than 10 percent of people with TS. The mix, frequency and severity of tics fall along a wide spectrum. Depending on their intensity and number, they can be emotionally upsetting and socially stigmatizing. In most cases, however, TS symptoms are mild and require little or no treatment.

TS affects at least 100,000 Americans, though many cases go undiagnosed, so the actual number may be much higher. The syndrome emerges in childhood, usually between ages 6 and 10. It is three to four times more common in boys than girls and affects people from all racial and ethnic groups. Often TS coexists with other conditions, such as attention deficit disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder, impulse-control problems and learning disabilities. In some cases, these associated conditions can create more problems for those affected than their tics alone. Early diagnosis (and treatment, when needed) are important in all suspected TS cases, but particularly in cases accompanied by other conditions. TS patients have normal intelligence and can expect to live a full lifespan. For many, symptoms subside in late adolescence, and in some cases disappear entirely.

Simple motor and vocal tics:

Eye blinking
Head jerking
Shoulder shrugging
Grimacing
Throat clearing
Yelping
Sniffing
Tongue clicking
Complex motor and vocal tics:

Jumping
Inappropriate touching of other people or objects
Smelling
Twirling about
Uttering words or phrases out of context
Repeating short phrases, such as “oh boy” or “all right”
Constantly repeating words of other people (called echolalia)
Vocalizing socially unacceptable words (coprolalia)
Hitting or biting oneself (rare)

You may consider seeking help from:

Tourette Syndrome Association, Inc.
The Web site of this national organization includes basic information about TS, including answers to frequently asked questions and common myths and facts, as well as contact info for local organization chapters, full text of several TSA publications and info about ordering publications and videos from the association's catalog.

Hope this helps.

I’d be tic’d, too!

by Don

We feel his pain, but I can’t help getting a mental image of…....

....this poor sap, bent over his cartoon board, drawing strange characters. All the while he is plagued by eye blinking, head jerking, shoulder shrugging, grimacing, throat clearing, and yelping. Not to mention sniffing and tongue clicking. But somehow, he “maintains.”

With great effort he manages to bring these symptoms under control, just as a couple of potential new clients (a middle age gentleman and his beautiful young wife) arrive at his studio. They’ve been reading Salamanderbits, and are interested in the possibility of “the artist” doing some contract work for them.

Hubby: We’re stating a newsletter for our mail order business, and thought, maybe we could contract you to do the artwork for the cover page. Are you interested?

“Artist”: (Jumps up from chair, grabs the man’s umbrella, fondles it, smells it, then twirls around) Sure! (Clears throat. Shruggs. Lets out a couple of muted yelps) What do you have in mind?

Wifey: (Glancing nervously at the entrance/exit door to be sure that it’s open) Well, we’ve been thinking of starting off with one of your characters-you know the guy with the wide mouth and big teeth, opening his mailbox to find a package from us. Then, at the bottom of the page….

“Artist”: Oh boy, oh boy, oh boy, oh boy, oh boy. Are you interested? Are you interested? Oh Boy, oh boy, oh boy. Oh, sorry, I was…..(clears throat, shruggs, yelps a little louder this time)…. Just getting the image focused in my mind. (Leans over, takes womans arm, begins sniffing and smelling.)

Hubby: I beg your pardon! What are you doing!?

“Artist”: (Releases woman, bites his own hand, yelps even louder this time) Oh boy, Oh boy….I was just…oh boy…trying to get a better idea of how this character will look. What do you want the package to look like?

Hubby: (Now thinking he may have made a mistake coming here, but trying desperately to allow for “artistic eccentricities”) Honey?

Wifey: Well…(shaken, but also trying to allow for “poetic license”)…It needs to look kind of like a Christmas present, with a bow, and our company name should be big and prominent.

“Artist”: like a Christmas present, with a bow, like a Christmas present, with a bow, like a Christmas present, with a bow, like a Christmas present, with a bow, like a Christmas present, with a bow, oh boy! OK, I’ve got an idea. (Twirls around, sniffs the air, picks up his pen and smells it. Then looks at woman) TAKE OFF YOUR BLOUSE AND SHOW ME YOUR TITS!

Hubby: (Stunned) I beg your pardon! Have you lost your mind!? What did you say to my wife?

“Artist”: (more eye blinking, head jerking, shoulder shrugging grimacing, throat clearing) Oh sorry….what I meant was…take a piece of paper and show me your company logos. (Sniffs the air, picks up a piece of paper, smells it, sets it down in front of woman. Hands her a pen) What do they look like? Oh boy, oh boy, oh boy, oh boy. (Tic, tic)

Wifey: (begins to draw)

“Artist”: (Jumps up and down several times, twirls around, begins yelping uncontrollably) I WANT TO FUCK YOU! SUCK MY COCK! YOU PEOPLE ARE SICK! BLOW ME NOW!……….

(Husband and wife, shocked and confused, make a hasty run for the exit. The don’t look back.)

“Artist”: <I guess the stress is getting to me lately. I need to calm down> Goes to computer. Logs onto Internet, finds Perdue Board, starts typing….FUCK YOU YOU SICK BITCH!! by T. hE tRuTH

We are a non-denominational, non-profit group of fans of Andy Kaufman. Loosely-based upon the examples of Andy's
life and career, as well as T.M., Taoism & Zen Buddhism, B/S.T.A.K. is an inclusive community of supportive Andy
Kaufman fans and followers.
We believe in the healing properties of laughter and the saving properties of Andy's life example.

I have investigated BSTAK a little, and found it well worth my time...

I would encourage all Andylovers and/or deep thinkers to do the same...

Other things you are not:

1. Funny
2. Essential
3. Well-liked
4. Stirring up an "interesting" disagreement for the sake of performance art.
5. Engaged in a conversation with me. Ever. So shut up.

For the record:

The ONLY (I repeat ONLY)people that have EVER been "outed" have been 'fake posters' who have appeared here for the clear and unmistakable purpose of personally attacking, harassing, or ridiculing for personal motive, those here who have tried to carry on discussion. There has NEVER been even one instance of any sincere poster here being rejected for ANY reason, nor would there need to be.

If you have examples to prove me wrong, I'd love to read them!

To "NOT" T. wEieR

by Don

OK. We get the joke, T, or J. or whatever you want to be called. And you are free to promote yourself any way you choose, within the law. But WHY the anamosity? Why the personal attacks? Why the vandalism? Why the destruction? Why the clear intent to hurt others?

Don't you think tht's just a bit beneath you? (Just curious)

MOTM

by

Dear Andy's Friends:

This is just a veddy short message to let all the BSTAK members know about the "MotM."

The "Man On The Moon?" I hear you asking...

No, the "Message Of The Moment!"

Since writing to you all and stating my intention of not publishing the TOWs andymore, I've gotten many emails requesting that I reconsider, along with offers for help, etc.

The compromise that has finally been worked out is a "Message Of The Moment." Not necessarily, weekly, bi-weekly, monthly, or even annually, I'll just publish the MOTM when something interesting comes up to discuss or think upon. I also welcome all and any ideas and will publish YOUR thoughts in MOTMs as well!

Ideas that are mere "seedlings" but might grow into interesting thoughts are:

1. Was it Tony Clifton's predestination to be eemetated by Andy Kaufmam, or was it Andy Kaufman's free will that led him to eemetate Tony Clifton?

2. If just ~one~ small detail in the past were changed, say, for instance, if Universal turned down the script for MOTM - most of us wouldn't even know each other right now. Mindblowing!

Special Thanks to Brother Don and Sister Sandra for the support and ideas!!

Viva BSTAK (once again!)
