Y$ denotes the string value to PRINT to the screen. You can call it anything you want, but the $ defines it as a string.
When you use PRINT without a semicolon at the end of the statement it prints the next value one row down automatically.
Each loop adds one more "X" to the string.
People here normally don't give answers to homework type problems so consider yourself lucky. Homework answers cheat your classmates. I hope that is not the case, because you came back to learn more.
