Binary files are a good thing to learn, because it is the way data is actually stored on the harddisk or on the RAM. If you've learned to manipulate the binary data of files, you can make and change every format if you know how to handle the file format. For example, uncompressed data is usually easy to import and export, as the binary file contains just some header data (id tag, ie "GIF" or "WAV", some file properties like sample rate for sounds, or image width and height and bits per pixel for images).
Also, if you use long integers as a pointer, you can use very large files that don't fit into the RAM memory.
