I bought the "Revolutionary Guide to QBasic" when it first came out in 1996.by Solitaire (Login Solitaire1)S The list price was $34.95, and it came with a 3 1/2" disk. However, the Setup.exe file and other files on the disk don't work, as they were intended for a pure DOS system. That's probably why the newer editions don't include the disk.
Is there really a newer edition? The book may be out of print, and maybe that's why Amazon charges so much for a new copy. They may have found a limited stock of the original books. (???) If anyone here does have a copy of the book, which edition is it? What is the list price? Does it mention a disk on the back page? Does it come with a place for the disk on the inside back page (assuming you bought a used copy with the disk missing)? There may possibly have been a separate original edition without a disk (at a lower price). My book has an icon at the bottom of the front cover that says, "With Disk." There are 12 pages in the table of contents, too much for me to type up. The book is 577 pages long. The information is intended for advanced programmers and you should probably find it very useful. The following is from the back page of my book: -------------------------------------------------------------------------- "We delve into how your programs interact with memory and data. After covering arrays and advanced system functions, we progress into the subject of accessing the power of machine code routines from within QBasic. We finish this topic with a complete example of how to access and control the mouse in QBasic. "We then move on to discuss complex data structures and examine some popular methods of searching them. Following a comparison of all the various sort algorithms, we continue on towards a comprehensive understanding of the file system and file management. This then serves as a gentle introduction to the world of program design, illustrated by methods in the programs. "The next section is devoted to programming multimedia in QBasic. We will show you how to get stunning results from even the simplest of programming. Running through bit-mapped graphics, 3D programming, ray casing, animaiton, quality audio and accessing the SoundBlaster, this is where you can bring your QBasic applications to life. A fine collection of fully explained programs demonstrate some of the fantastic effects QBasic can achieeve, including the first ever Doom-like 3D environment engine for QBasic." ------------------------------------------------------------------------- There is more, but you get the idea. If I can find the time, I'm thinking of digging up my 18-year-old laptop (with PC-DOS 7) and see if it will still turn on. (I would use my 26-year-old XT computer, but it only comes with 5 1/4" disk drives.) Then I can try running the Setup.exe file on the disk to see if it works. It should contain a lot of sample programs from the book. I will then have to copy them to a disk and place it in my current computer in order to zip up the files. IF and WHEN I can get this done, I will put up a new post to let everyone know. However, this is copyrighted material and I can't legally post it anywhere. Only people who actually purchased the book may have a right to the contents.
