I added:

IF errnum = 0 THEN PRINT "COM exists!

Right after the open of the com port. And it does print.
Maybe my logic is wrong. I'm testing:
IF wsFileNum = 0

To mean the com port is closed. Maybe that is not a good test. When would the
file number be removed?
