As I saw it, Gerrard lost his balance and stumbled rather than dived. The referee made a wrong call. A genuine error. A little different than deliberately breaking the rules by fielding a world class player (initially two world class players) that they weren't entitled to field.
If a referee deliberately made incorrect decisions to try and gain advantage for a particular side, I think you'll find that he/she would be banned from refereeing altogether, let alone being relegated to lower league games. What's the difference? West Ham deliberately broke the rules as a club by putting Tevez in their team because they thought he would assist them in getting better results than if they didn't put him in their team.
But I think we had all moved on from this.........until Paul chose to bring it up again on this forum.
