Yesterday at the match I sensed an emerging new tactical approach to our game ,it may have been because our big lad was absent,or it may have been because things have got to change as per our chairman's instructions. We only seldom played the long high ball and when we did it yielded nothing in terms of goals, although it did help to relieve our overworked defence.Their midfield functioned better than ours in creative ability, bur their forward play was poor in terms of converting their chances. After saying that our midfield played much better than in many previous games with Little and Yeates both catching the eye.But our defence was in the long run better than theirs and that's why we won the game.
Duncan seems to indicate that nothing much needs to change in our style of play other than an improvement in ball retention, but he also seemingly still wants to use our big boy to hopefully latch on to a regular supply of long balls. He goes on to suggest that Newcastle have won the division by the long ball. For my part I have not seen them play this season other than edited highlights on tv and certainly their big boy has figured regularly, but so have many others and my feelings are that they have more to their game than a reliance on long hopeful balls.
So to my mind we will need to do more than just improve ball retention and if thats all we can do in terms of improvement things will not get no better. The two best teams in the league this year have got their by playing much better football than us.The long ball will have played its part in both teams success, but imo to a lesser degree than Duncan suggests in relation to Newcastle.WBA have stuck to their guns and from what I have seen, again only on tv, have played attractive football, which has once again delivered the goods for their Chairman and their supporters. My hope is that we will model our new squad on their style ,if we do success I think awaits. But if we only tinker as Duncan seems to suggest, then little or no improvement will be the deserved reward, although a bit of tinkering will make the managers job that much easier.
