Airborne Jeeps

Hi guys,

I just realised time is ticking by so thought I better make a start on the jeeps. I hope to do two, one towing a 74mm pack and the second as a damaged vehicle with a few holes in the bonnet and some flat/burnt out tyres. The Tamiya kit provides the main part of the vehicle and I have left over bits from the previous Resicast conversions that I hope will give me enough bits and what I don't have I should be able to scratch build. (famous last words)

The bits:

Progress:

Just getting started, cut of the RHS step and started cleaning up the rear bumpers. Also cut down the front bumpers which need small handles fixed to them. I had already scratched one extra bonnet and alter a dash board. As you can see the bits are well organised speard over several boxes lol, lol.

I haven't seen a pic of the 75mm pack towing version but will use the set up for the RA 6pdr version as a guide. If you get interested in this vehicle then I can recommend Rob van Meel's British Ariborne Jeeps 1942 - 1945 Modifications & Markings as a reference. What is nice about the conversions is that although the Mods were standardised, they were carried out by REME Wksp and therefor there is a great deal of variety in what and how things got done, or part done!!

Hi Randy and Erik,

Thanks for the encouragement. I added the engines to the chassis last night. I want to see if I can add some more detail to at least one of the engines so that I have the option of leaving the damaged vehicle with the hood up.

More later in the week.

Some engine work

October 28 2009, 12:29 PM

Hi Guys,

Started to add a little more detail to the engine on one of the vehicles, if the overall result is OK I will have the option of leaving the bonnet up on the damaged version. Parts are made from scrap and left over fittings. I had already convered an extra bonnet (the one in green) and altered a dash board from the kit one (the pink one). Other than that I've just drill out the horn.

Great work Al

These look very interesting. Having just built one of these Jeeps I know how small that engine is! Looking forward to more of these

Battery Leads Question?

October 30 2009, 12:59 PM

Hi Chris and Randy,

Thanks for looking in folks. Engine detail is progressing, does anyone by change know where the battery leads ended up? I haven't found a picture showning where the attachment points of the lead are once they leave the battery?

Thanks

Al

Hi Al, I don't have anything on the jeep but normal would be to run the positive lead to the starter and ground the other lead to the frame. Randy

Re: Airborne Jeeps

November 1 2009, 7:40 AM

Hi Guys,

not too much done this week I'm afraid. I have added some small fittings to the front of the engine grills, on the damaged vehicle the fixing for the front tyre and on the other the 2 small bars that the support straps run through.

I did discover a set of Eduard PE for the Tamiya jeep I bought some time ago in a Hannants Sale and had forgotten about which will be handy. Other than that I've just added some wiring to the engine bits and started to clean up the axels. Hopefully today and next week will see some decent progress.

You also need to remove the small side lights on the engine radiator. I'll keep these and use then for the side lights on the front fenders later.

Hi guys,

Not sterling progress but a bit.

I have added the engine detail, pedals, scratched dashboard, rear rack and front tyre support plus some empyt rifle fittings, can holders and detail to the bonnet. Still a ways to go yet.

On the 755mm towing version just added the positionable steering axel so way behind there.
