Happy Thanksgiving to you too! I don't care that much about the food, but its fun to watch my husband and cats dig in. I'll be in the corner with the wine.
I shan't be there, today we're driving up to Denver to visit friends and Russet's bro. I expect lots of gaming to ensue as one couple that we'll be spending two nights with are hard-core gamers and don't have anyone else to play with. I've got two new games that I'm testing: one where you're a new ghost learning how to scare people, and one where you're trying to make someone smarter without causing his brain to explode. I'm looking forward to it!

We're in Longmont right now with gamer friends from Phoenix and I think Russet's brother is in Boulder, where we're going tomorrow for T-Day, then back to Dave & Kris's Saturday and heading home Sunday afternoon/evening.

is where we stayed when we came back from BlingFest all those years ago. We stopped in Omaha for a couple of days, at that time my friends and Russet's brother and family didn't live here.
Wednesday we're off to her brother's place outside of Boulder. We played games until midnight tonight, I think I started playing games with Dave's wife Kris at around 3:00, my wife joined us shortly before Dave got home around 4:00. We don't have anyone to play games with in Cloudcroft, though there's now a decent game store in Alamogordo that we frequent.
We used to play games a lot when the kids were younger. Now they aren't and we rarely do anymore. OCCASIONALLY on Christmas, but that's about it. I kinda miss it. Joey's always on the computer so I have no one to play with.

I make card games because they have inexpensive production, but we're playing all sorts: Settlers of Cataan, Alhembra, Knights (a dice game), Streetcar, Thurn and Taxis, Pandemic, Amazeing Labyrinth, all sorts of stuff.
We tested my new game Tuesday and it worked pretty well for the very first run. I'm going to get one or more test runs in and will have a new set printed for the game store next week.
when I was at my brothers house we played Farkle a lot. Kinda tough finding the game, but we did.
My mom likes to play spoons.

Mom & baby are doing well. Dad is amazed at the miracle of birth and didn't believe me when I said all he would do is watch his baby. And that's all he can do Tom will be a good daddy, unlike Kendyll's sperm donor.
Speaking of - because of the paranoia surrounding the flu and swine flu, hospitals here aren't allowing any visitors under 18 even IN the hospital, so Kendyll can't meet Quinn until they go home; maybe Sunday. We're hoping that doesn't screw up their bonding process.
Jennifer took pics, but they're on Lauren's camera so I don't have any to post right now. I have 2 on my phone, but I don't think I have the cord to get them to my computer. But when I get pics uploaded, I'll post one or 2.

and she was told 3-4 weeks ago that she was most likely infertile. HA!
Sarah informed me yesterday that she is pregnant. Her first baby. Josh's parents 1st grandkid and his grandmothers 1st great grandchild. So you KNOW that baby will be spoiled terribly.
AND she's still at Northwestern working on her PhD - for another 1 1/2 - 2 years. Good thing her husband WANTS to be a Mister Mom.
Sarah is JUST pregnant - estimates her due date as Aug 1. Because of her "infertility" problem, she's been seeing specialist and participating in studies - which is why she was curious about the possibility of being pregnant at all. She has access to all the tools and since she's been tracking things, knew something was off.
As I told my kids - there goes my vacation time next year. My problem will be getting to Chicago in time for the birth and without her having a C-section, babies aren't predictable. I can only hope my timing is good.

We saw my immunologist last Tuesday and since beginning treatment, my IgG level has pretty much quadrupled. It's still below normal, but pretty darn close. He also said I could go back to school in the spring, I just have to watch it if there's a flu outbreak. A bulk of the seasonal flu season is over and I haven't gotten sick, so things do seem to be working.
I'll still (most likely) be doing immune globulin replacement therapy for the rest of my life, but the improvement is nice.

I know it has been a long time since I have posted. My health has taken a new path and I need prayers and good thoughts please. I have been suffering with severe fatigue and an increase in my pulse rate to the point it is serious. I had a Holter monitor done this last week and they found that my one chamber is firing off more electrical nerve pulses than it should. It is an autonomic nerve and I will be seeing the electrical cardiologist soon. I might be having to have a catheter ablation where they go in and shoot the nerve cells to stop the rapid pulse. Please send good thoughts. I am nervous and that makes it worse. I have to stay calm and not doing anything strenuous....although I haven't been this whole summer. It doesn't take much to set off the rapid pulse. I take a shower and sometimes I am so exhausted I just want to lay on the shower floor.

Thank you all so much for your kindness. I love you all very much.
I just wanted you to know that I called Bt and talked with her husband Don. Things are not going well and it looks grim. Don said that she has withered away and is very weak. It was heartbreaking to hear. When I got off the phone I sobbed. Bt is such an amazing, loving person and I feel such sadness. Please say prayers for her family my friends.
I'll keep BT and her family in my thoughts and prayers as well.

That's very sad news... But thank-you, sweetie, for letting us know. Bt is a very special lady and so much a part of this place. She and her family are in my thoughts and prayers.
Sorry I didn't reply earlier. I haven't had time to really sit here and read.
Has anyone heard from her in the past week? Hopefully, she'll get a 2nd wind and pull out of this. She's much too special to oh so many people for her not to.

I've actually made it the last two weeks, brief words with El Bunno the previous week. Last week, didn't catch anyone. But this week I've got a doctor appt in Las Cruces Tuesday, so I won't be on.
I never make chat anymore. Can't remember the last time I was there
Left home last night at 8:45, got home at 9:45 this morning. No sleep last night. Well, a catnap in a hospital recliner. An hour at most. I'm so exhausted. It's been along time since I got by 2-3 days on next to no sleep. That plus the fact the stupid hospitals out here have restrictions now - NO ONE under 18 allowed in the hospital AT ALL unless a patient. They had planned on Kendyll being at the birth. So we decided she could "be there" via Skype. So we got that up and running. The hospitals have also said that due to the H1N1 virus, no more than 2 people allowed in the room at a time - and 1 of those is the dad. What the F***? Like that's going to stop the H1N1? Couldn't one of us carry it in just as well? And it's only contagious if more than 2 people are in a room at a time??? No wonder the general public is being dumbed down.
Anyway - Lauren was having steady contractions - every 2-3 minutes. Go to hospital, contractions registering on the machine, everything great. They hooked her up to an IV about 11-12 pm/am. About 3 or 4 am the contractions just stopped. Well, she said they DIDN'T stop, but they went from being at 34-39 to 12-13. Several nurses throughout the night said she was dilated 2, then 3, then 4, 4-5, - one even said that Nov 9 2009 would definitely be Quinn's birthday.
Her least favorite doc in the practice came on duty at 7 am - got to her room about 7:30 am. He said she was only dilated 2, maybe 3 and that she was never 4-5. He said she was only about 50% effaced, yet for the past week and a half, HER doc at the practice has said she was 80% - same as the resident doc overnight.
sigh
He decided to start Pitocin, and then he was going to break her water - and before the nurse could get to it, he changed his mind, came in and said, "At the risk of being the most hated man on the block. . . " he said he changed his mind and was sending her home. He insists she is only 37 weeks, but there is no way that is all she is because she and Tom weren't even in the same state for the 2 week time period they say she got pregnant in.
It's all a guessing game anyway. I think since she most likely conceived on Feb 14 - she should have the baby next weekend, not in (almost) 3 weeks. I could be wrong - I've only had 5 kids and he's delivered how many? But I maintain a mom knows more accurately when she got pregnant / when she's due than a doctor does. We'll see. I know vacation wise, it would be better for me if she had the baby on Thanksgiving, but - I'll adjust my vacation time accordingly. Like - I used up a day today. But - Quinn is more important.

It's SOOO late (how late is it?) that I'm typing this message on my iPod Touch before I go to sleep. Which also means that you'll have to scroll down a few lines for the URL.
Hurst and other NZ actors you may recognize from Herc/Xena and other shows are mounting another satirical holiday stage production. Article, photo, and cast list at the link above.
and I did recognize a few other names listed there, though I think Jodie Rimmer should have listed McLeod's Daughters.

The below statements are my own personal views and I don't mean to degrade anyone who thinks otherwise. I just see the public being lured down a dark alley by various governments who are "in bed with" pharmaceutical/anti-bacterial companies and not really looking out for the publics best interest.
With that said, my question is - has the whole world gone stupid? Seriously.
Why does everyone fail to understand that bacteria and virus are 2 different entities? That you can NOT kill a virus and that anti-bacterial doesn't prevent the flu?
Over and over the people who know tell the public (if they would just listen) that the best thing you can do is wash your hands with soap and water - for 15 - 20 seconds, several times throughout the day. The virus needs a host cell within your body to live and reproduce. You smearing your hands with anti-bacterial gel is only spreading the virus around a larger surface, allowing it more opportunities to invade your body and find that host cell. Washing your hands with soap and warm water frequently wash viruses (& bacteria) off preventing either from entering your body.
Colds are caused by 1 of many different viruses. Flu's are caused by a virus. A viral infection has to run it's course. Rest, fluids, pain reliever - the normal course of treatment is about all anyone can do for any viral infection. And once you exhibit symptoms, it's too late. You were exposed as early as a few hours earlier and up to a week or so prior and during that time, you were contagious and unknowingly infected countless others.
"The best way to avoid a cold is to wash hands thoroughly and regularly; and to avoid touching the eyes, nose, mouth, and face. Anti-bacterial soaps have no extraordinary effect on the cold virus; it is the mechanical action of hand washing with the soap that removes the virus particles"
The media doesn't help by spreading their lies. The anti-bacterial companies don't help in erroneously promoting their products. Yes - there are bacteria out there. Yes some of it is bad. But how many years have we lived with bacteria and without all this paranoia? TPTB have stated that major difference between the H1N1 flu and the "normal" flu is that the H1N1 is more contagious. Therefore, more people could potentially get the H1N1 flu. People who have died from H1N1 could have died from the normal flu just as easily. It was just their turn to go. And I bet - if we could ask them - at least some of them had tried the anti-bacterial gel to prevent it. It just doesn't work. I wish the human race would get their intelligence back and stop listening to erroneous propaganda.
Go outside. Get some fresh air. Build up natural immunities to germs and bacteria. Strengthen your body. That's the best way to stay healthy.
Sorry guys. I get frustrated because apparently I work with a bunch of educated idiots.

alcohol doesn't kill viruses? I thought it was the alcohol in those gels that killed germs? Is a germ a virus?
All I know is that every time we've been on a plane this year the smell of that gel has been overwhelming as most everyone whips out a bottle every time it's mealtime...

that the chemicals in those gels can be poisonous - especially to kids, who, btw - love the stuff? Adults have problems too (Joey has a severe reaction to those gels). Good old fashioned soap and water still work the best. REGULAR soap - not anti-bacterial.
An excerpt from the Mayo Clinic website:
Germs live everywhere. You can find germs in the air, on food, plants and animals, in the soil, in the water, and on just about every other surface including your own body.
Most germs won't harm you. Your immune system protects you against a multitude of infectious agents. However, some germs are formidable adversaries because they're constantly mutating to breach your immune system's defenses. Knowing more about how germs work can increase your chances of avoiding infection.
Infectious agents (germs) come in a variety of shapes and sizes. Categories include:

We were told at work that H1N1 was more dangerous to children and the elderly because they didn't have previous exposure to flu viruses. It sounds to me like normal flu prevention should be all it takes to avoid H1N1.
and these are the same people who beg their doctors for antibiotics and drugs when they have a cold or the flu, and then wonder why we get the drug resistant, Super-bugs.

in fact, that the hand cleaners out there (like the germ-x parents are required to buy in their children's school supplies) that these hand cleaners actually wash away GOOD bacteria that is meant to protect us too...
so while they are supposed to be good for us...they're not really good for us.
And by the way, how did people who were before our time and didn't have all the "wonders of modern medicine" handle "germs and viruses and etc"????
You heard more about people dying from scarlet fever and such things like that than the typical cold or flu.
Chicken soup, chicken soup, and more chicken soup, along with blankets, fluids and plenty of rest.
the people who have died from H1N1 in Australia have died because they caught it whilst sick with another illness, eg. cancer and bacterial pneumonia. It is no more deadly than the normal flu except that those with weaker immune systems, who probably would have died if exposed to regular flu anyway, get it worse!
I agree that the world is going 'germ mad' I don't use those gels, and I encourage my kids to play like regular kids in the play ground and get dirty! No use keping them sterile until one day they go out in the world and get bombarded with germs having not developed any sort of immune system. All the cleaning product companies are in on it too - new kitchen, bathroom etc cleaners that kill99.9% of harmful bacteria that hang around your house etc. are making kids sick because they aren't even exposed to a few household germs!
to hear I'm not the only one thinking the world has gone mad and stupid.
My kids were always allowed outside - any kind of weather. Yes they got colds. Several times. Yes, they fell, skinned their elbows and knees, some broke a bone or 2. But I think they're healthier now because of the earlier in life experiences. Call me old fashioned I don't mind.
What's meant to be is meant to be. Not to say that if I develop some horrible, erratic, did I say horrible disease I wouldn't fight it, cuz I would. I just think things like colds and the flu are inevitable. After all, they're respiratory - airborne diseases. Unless you live in a bubble, you're gonna be exposed at some point in your life.

I have a masters in genetics. I currently work in a bacteriology lab. Our lab is transitioning from basic research into... hopefully... developing new types of antibiotics. I'm no expert on virology... but I did take a viral genetics course as a grad student. I'm no expert on much of anything... but I know a little about this stuff and I'm always looking up scientific research for my job.
I wish more people knew as much as you do about the differences between bacteria and viruses. Typical antibiotics do not work on viruses and prescribing useless antibiotics only runs the risk of selecting for bacteria with antibiotic resistance for no reason.
Moreover it's true... many microorganisms are benign and they can even be beneficial. There are more bacteria in your body than human cells. Some bacteria that can make a person sick rarely get a chance too... because there are so many other bacteria "in the neighborhood" there's no opportunity for the pathogenic one to gain a foothold. I could go on and on... but let's get back to viruses.
I already suspected that your broad statement that hand sanitizers are useless against viruses was probably an overstatement.
Viruses come in what may be a surprising variety of types. Some have DNA as their genetic material. Others have RNA. Some have simple protein "shells." Ah... but others... others wrap those protein shells in softer, more complex, envelopes. No matter the virus, it has to have to have the right chemical components exposed on their surface to interact with the right other components on a target cell in order to get inside. But these "right compounds" vary for different viruses and hosts. True, viruses aren't living so alcohol won't kill kill them. But if alcohols and/or other compounds can, say, strip the "keys" off the surface of a virus, it cannot unlock the cell and get inside.
Those were just bits of info about viruses I think I remember and some theories based on my science education thrown in. My hunch was that, while there are probably a lot of viruses that alcohol-based hand sanitizers won't be effective on (like maybe the hard shelled ones) but there very well might be others where they have an effect. And it's also good to remember... interventions do NOT have to be 100% effective to do the job. You do have an immune system too. Different pathogens have different infectious "doses." For something very virulent, you might need only one "germ"... but my impression is that's pretty rare. Some of the more infective bacterias we mention in grant proposals still require about 10 bacteria before they'll make the average person sick. And my impression is that's considered a fairly low dose by bacterial pathogen standards. So you don't need to kill or neutralize all the "bad bugs" to see a benefit. You just have to reduce their numbers below the "threshold" where they can act like a gang and run amok in the neighborhood (LOL).
So here's a few snippets from some research and review articles at the scirntific literature database from the National Institutes of Health (NIH). I've stayed away from ones that have obvious corporate ties, although just because they're from companies, that doesn't mean the science is faulty. The first study was clearly very small... only 20 people. That's why I looked for a few more. But I don't have time to keep searching. {sheepish grin}
Oh, but before the references let me add:
TPTB have stated that major difference between the H1N1 flu and the "normal" flu is that the H1N1 is more contagious.
I also think this isn't quite accurate. Again, not sure and don't have time to look it up... But I am under the impression that H1N1 differs from ordinary flu in both its severity and the age group it prefers. You may be familiar with phrases like, it targets "the very young, the very old, and the immune-compromised." That's a standard line for many infectious diseases. But the great pandemic flu of ... er... 1918 (?), the early 1900s anyway... That one was different than "ordinary flu." And H1N1 is a bit more like that flu, I think. My impression is that both these "different" flu's hit young people in their prime especially hard... like teens and 20s. I think the theory about the 1918 flu was that it might have had something to do with how "strong" the immune system is when you're that age... and that the virus somehow tapped into that "strength" turning it into a weakness.

Efficacy of soap and water and alcohol-based hand-rub preparations against live H1N1 influenza virus on the hands of human volunteers.
Grayson ML, Melvani S, Druce J, Barr IG, Ballard SA, Johnson PD, Mastorakos T, Birch C.
Infectious Diseases Department, Austin Health, Heidelberg, Victoria 3084, Australia. Lindsay.Grayson@austin.org.au
BACKGROUND: Although pandemic and avian influenza are known to be transmitted via human hands, there are minimal data regarding the effectiveness of routine hand hygiene (HH) protocols against pandemic and avian influenza. METHODS: Twenty vaccinated, antibody-positive health care workers had their hands contaminated with 1 mL of 10(7) tissue culture infectious dose (TCID)(50)/0.1 mL live human influenza A virus (H1N1; A/New Caledonia/20/99) before undertaking 1 of 5 HH protocols (no HH [control], soap and water hand washing [SW], or use of 1 of 3 alcohol-based hand rubs [61.5% ethanol gel, 70% ethanol plus 0.5% chlorhexidine solution, or 70% isopropanol plus 0.5% chlorhexidine solution]). H1N1 concentrations were assessed before and after each intervention by viral culture and real-time reverse-transcriptase polymerase chain reaction (PCR). The natural viability of H1N1 on hands for >60 min without HH was also assessed. RESULTS: There was an immediate reduction in culture-detectable and PCR-detectable H1N1 after brief cutaneous air drying--14 of 20 health care workers had H1N1 detected by means of culture (mean reduction, 10(3-4) TCID(50)/0.1 mL), whereas 6 of 20 had no viable H1N1 recovered; all 20 health care workers had similar changes in PCR test results. Marked antiviral efficacy was noted for all 4 HH protocols, on the basis of culture results (14 of 14 had no culturable H1N1; (P< .002) and PCR results (P< .001; cycle threshold value range, 33.3-39.4), with SW statistically superior (P< .001) to all 3 alcohol-based hand rubs, although the actual difference was only 1-100 virus copies/microL. There was minimal reduction in H1N1 after 60 min without HH. CONCLUSIONS: HH with SW or alcohol-based hand rub is highly effective in reducing influenza A virus on human hands, although SW is the most effective intervention. Appropriate HH may be an important public health initiative to reduce pandemic and avian influenza transmission.

These researchers found that alcohol-based sanitizers do have "some" effect on this particular virus (I think norovirus causes a type of "stomach flu") but suggest it may not be "enough" of an effect. I'd have to read the paper to know what they consider "enough" and how they make that determination.

Hand disinfection is considered important in preventing the transmission of viruses, including norovirus. We investigated the virucidal efficacy of nine hand sanitisers (four alcohol-based sanitisers, three non-alcoholic sanitisers and two triclosan-containing antimicrobial liquid soaps) against feline calicivirus, a surrogate for norovirus, on artificially contaminated fingertips for 30 s and 2 min contact periods. Among alcohol-based sanitisers, a product containing 99.5% ethanol was more effective than those containing 62% ethanol, 70% isopropanol or 91% isopropanol. A log(10) virus reduction factor of 1.00-1.30 was achieved with 99.5% ethanol but those containing a lower alcohol concentration only achieved a log(10) reduction factor of

Efficacy of hospital germicides against adenovirus 8, a common cause of epidemic keratoconjunctivitis in health care facilities.

Department of Hospital Epidemiology, University of North Carolina Health Care System, Chapel Hill, NC 27514, USA. brutala@unch.unc.edu
The inactivation of virus-contaminated nonporous inanimate surfaces was investigated using adenovirus type 8, a common cause of epidemic keratoconjunctivitis. A 10-microl inoculum of adenovirus was placed onto each stainless steel disk (1-cm diameter), and the inoculum was allowed to air dry for 40 min. Twenty-one different germicides (including disinfectants and antiseptics) were selected for this study based on their current uses in health care. After a 1- or 5-minute exposure to 50 microl of the germicide, the virus-germicide test mixture was neutralized and assayed for infectivity. Using an efficacy criterion of a 3-log10 reduction in the titer of virus infectivity and regardless of the virus suspending medium (i.e., hard water, sterile water, and hard water with 5% fetal calf serum), only five disinfectants proved to be effective against the test virus at 1 min: 0.55% ortho-phthalaldehyde, 2.4% glutaraldehyde, 2.65% glutaraldehyde, approximately 6,000 ppm chlorine, and approximately 1,900 ppm chlorine. Four other disinfectants showed effectiveness under four of the five testing conditions: 70% ethanol, 65% ethanol with 0.63% quaternary ammonium compound, 79.6% ethanol with 0.1% quaternary ammonium compound, and 0.2% peracetic acid. Of the germicides suitable for use as an antiseptic, 70% ethanol achieved a 3-log10 reduction under four of the five test conditions. These results emphasize the need for proper selection of germicides for use in disinfecting noncritical surfaces and semicritical medical devices, such as applanation tonometers, in order to prevent outbreaks of epidemic keratoconjunctivitis.

Antiviral activity of alcohol for surface disinfection.
Moorer WR.
Department of Cariology, Endodontology, Pedodontology, Academic Center for Dentistry, Amsterdam, the Netherlands. w.moorer@acta.nl
Bacteria and viruses from the patient's mouth travel with dental splatter and spills. A surface disinfectant should possess antiviral activity as well as antibacterial action. Because of frequent and 'open' application in the dental office, such a disinfectant should be non-toxic, non-allergenic and safe for the hygienist. It now appears that high-concentration alcohol mixtures (i.e. 80% ethanol + 5% isopropanol) are not only excellent antibacterials, but quickly inactivate HIV as well as hepatitis B and hepatitis C viruses. Compared to alternative surface disinfectants, use of high-concentration alcohol for the spray-wipe-spray method of surface disinfection in dentistry appears safe and efficient. However, dried matter should be wiped and hydrated first.

Arguments for alcoholic hand disinfection.
Rotter ML.
Hygiene Institute of the University, Kinderspitalgasse, Vienna, Austria.
The non-aqueous use of ethanol or propanols offers various advantages over washing hands with either unmedicated or medicated soap in both hygienic and surgical hand disinfection. Alcohols exert the strongest and fastest activity against a wide spectrum of bacteria and fungi (but not bacterial spores) as well as enveloped (but less so against non-enveloped) viruses, being little influenced by interfering substances. They are of low toxicity and offer acceptable skin tolerability when made up with suitable emollients. The mode of their application is simple and three to four times more economical of time than wash procedures, features which help to increase the compliance with the rules of hand hygiene.
I didn't copy/paste the entire abstract. Let's try again:

Antiseptics containing 10% povidone-iodine (equivalent to 1% available iodine) reduced virus titre by a log(10) reduction factor of 2.67 within 30s contact time. This viral reduction rate was higher than that achieved with any of the alcohol-based sanitisers, non-alcoholic sanitisers or antimicrobial soaps. The two antimicrobial soaps tested showed minimal virus reduction (a log(10) reduction factor of 0.17-0.50), which is similar to that obtained by washing hands without any soap (a log(10) reduction factor of 0.33-0.42). These results indicate that triclosan-containing antimicrobial soaps or alcohol-based hand rubs may be inadequate for preventing norovirus transmission. Further research on alternative hand sanitisers should continue for effective control of norovirus infections.
it was generalized. I'm on a mission to UN dumb the public.

Last time I checked, I was a human.
Ok - norovirus is the main virus for stomach flu, but I don't think that it is transferable from an animal to a human. But it is respiratory, in the air, so maybe.
Also - the research stated 62% ethanol not as effective which is what Purell is. Sorry. I still believe washing with soap and warm water is just as good. JMO
I know, I simplify things. I'm just a simple person, who believes in a lot of old fashioned ways. But I really appreciate all your effort in researching. I think you found a few that I had not seen.

Sorry I haven't been around much. My computer kept crashing and it took a while for my tech to get it back together and running. Then I had a month or so of really bad reaction to a Chemo treatment. I'm still not near back to what I was before the last series but doing some better at least.
Antares, you can add my vote to doing what ever needs to be done with the format here. I'm ever so grateful for all you've done here and can certainly understand the need to cut expenses and such.
I'll try to check in a little more often depending on how I feel.
'Shana and Aphrael has it stopped raining on you two yet?
I think of all of you often! I guess I'd better find some time and energy to really all the posts I've missed.
I'm SO GLAD TO SEE YOU! Ok, so I'm yelling. I'm also doing a happy dance
Please continue to improve, we miss you.

PLEASE be careful if you're going to upgrade to Windows 7! (OT)
October 26 2009 at 6:26 AM
Cyranose
Windows 7 released last week. A lot of people, myself included, are calling it Vista 2.0, but Microsoft would like to distance itself from the Vista name. If you have newer hardware, i.e. less than 2 years old and lots of memory and good video card, you probably shouldn't have any issues with upgrading as long as you're careful. I downloaded the beta of 7 and was running it in a virtual environment on my Mac and was satisfied, but I have no plans to buy it for my 5ish year old AMD Athlon system: it's just too old and underpowered comparatively (I use it as a Tivo repository). My virtual machine is going to be deactivated by MS in a month or so, at which point I'll go back to using my virtual XP image. Still, it worked well.
Here's some thoughts/recommendations:
I cannot emphasize this too strongly: BACK UP YOUR COMPUTER BEFORE UPGRADING!
You can get an external hard drive at Best Buy or Staples et al for $50-75ish. Microsoft says that you have to reformat your hard drive if you're upgrading from XP (you don't have to if you're upgrading from Vista, but it's always a good idea to do it). There are reports of people not having to reformat when upgrading from XP and earlier, but don't take the chance: BACK UP YOUR COMPUTER! MS includes a utility to restore your data from an external HD after installation, but I have no experience with that as the install that I did was to a new virtual image and had no data migration with it.
There are reports that some people are having problems downloading updates if they bought/downloaded the discounted price student edition. I'm sure MS will get that sorted out very soon.
I haven't heard of any horrible major third-party software problems with it, but I'm sure there will be some. Like I said, this is basically Vista 2.0: most of the major bugs have been ironed out of Vista, so 7 should be a fairly painless experience.
We bought ourselves new laptops for our anniversary (new for Joey - I've never had a laptop). They came with Windows 7. Joey said that was ok because they were new, but he knew about the problems encountered if converting. My home computer has XP, WHICH I like better than W7 so far. I can't see that it does anything for me and I don't like the way it looks. JMO

I have newer pc and laptop that came with Vista. I am used to it and like it ok but I still wish I had had a choice because I would have gotten XP on all my machines.
Thanks for the info!
I am having new kitten . . . urges. I have 3 domestic - 2 inside, 1 in/outside and Cole the African Serval - Outside. I would love a Siamese mix.
I train the babies to NOT get on counters, tables, etc or claw the furniture. And my kids are good about this too. I just don't want to go thru the training part. Must be getting old.
my cat? He knows he's not supposed to get on the counters or table, but does it for attention. And for some reason he feels an urge to climb up my new sofa and chair when we both know he can jump onto them easily. Silly cats.
I like my XP, though Windows 7 sounds pretty good, like maybe they finally did things right for a change, but since my computer has no problems ATM, I'll stick with XP. Think my next computer will be a Mac, eventually.

We're upgrading our computers that are running Vista already.
The XP computers aren't getting upgraded because they don't have the horsepower to run Win7.
We always do clean installs. We regularly wipe and reformat and reinstall just to clean out garbage.
My biggest concern is our security software - I need to go check and see if it will still work ok w/ Windows 7.

We got snow last night! Enough to stick and accumulate a bit, but I don't think it'll last too long as the days recently have been in the high 40s and above.
Well, no new vaccination last week. We thought we might have found some H1N1 in Phoenix, but their requirements were such that it wasn't worth the drive. I'm probably going to have to wait a few weeks while the supply builds up and we'll just have to hope that we don't get sick. Phoenix, just for Phoenix, got 180,000 doses: more than 4x what all of New Mexico has received thus far. And none of those seem to have made it out of Albuquerque/Santa Fe while the rural infection rate has been much higher than the urban rate.
Care to guess which of the two states have a higher infection rate? Hint: it's the one somewhat better known for growing chiles.
I don't have a huge problem with the doses staying up north as long as they're going for high-risk groups: children and pregnant women. Heck, 40,000 doses wouldn't even treat Las Cruces. I'll just be glad to see wider distribution.
We were excited when it started raining a few weeks back lol!
Good luck getting the H1N1 shot. Have you checked with your doctor?
So far they haven't gotten much here.

Well, got shot twice last week: pneumonia Thursday and seasonal flu Friday. I'm hoping I can find an H1N1 clinic this week. I'm not sure any of that vaccine has made it to NM yet.
I forgot to talk about our new dishwasher! It was an interesting experience. It was a model from last year, so we got a good price on it. It's large capacity, but the cool thing is that it has a sanitize cycle, which Russet and I think is a good thing. It also purges the water lines before starting a cycle, so no stale water possible.
So it gets installed. Celeste has fun barking at the installation guys until we shut her up in the bedroom. It goes pretty smooth, and I load it up and run it through a cycle. One of the installation guys is coughing up a storm, I remove myself from the kitchen whenever possible.
And after it completes the bottom of the pan is filled with water.
I try it again. Water in the pan.
Russet is not happy, her old dishwasher did the same thing. So I call my dad. He suggests that maybe the drain line that taps in to the side of the poor excuse for a garbage disposal didn't have a blocking slug knocked out that is supposed to be there if you don't have a dishwasher. I disconnect the drain line and can stick my screwdriver 4" into the hole, definitely no plug there. The next test is to disconnect the line from the dishwasher to the vacuum breaker, put it in a bucket, and run a rinse cycle. Water comes flowing out, so it appears to be the vacuum breaker.
I disconnect everything from the breaker and blow in to the line from the breaker to the disposal; no blockage there. So it's definitely the breaker. Go to the hardware store here in town, no breakers. Cruise down to Alamogordo and find a breaker just slightly off from identical. It was easier to install the blasted thing than to disconnect the lines and remove the old one!
Anyway, the dishwasher is now great. We get some water out of the breaker when it does a rinse, but that's what it's there for. The next time my dad is in down we'll connect it direct to the dishwasher coupling and bypass the vacuum breaker entirely. The only problem is that Cloudcroft has insanely hard water: the silverware and everything else comes out looking terrible. The observatory has the same problem, so we use the same detergent which, unfortunately, we can only get at Walmart. My boss has the same problem, he pours a cup of vinegar at the start of the final rinse cycle. If I can work out the timing, we might try that.
Russet's birthday is Monday, so we're going out Monday night. If it's still open, there's a French restaurant in Ruidoso that we might drive up for. We've had two new places open in Alamogordo; a really nice more modern place that does excellent soups and salads, we haven't had sandwiches or entrees there as they're not open every night for dinner; and a new BBQ joint that's just wonderful stuff. Unfortunately they're both closed Monday.
And the final blather is that I attended a cooking class Tuesday night: it was based on the movie Julie and Julia! We did several Julia Child recipes from the movie, lots of fun! Beef Bourginione, poached eggs, steamed artichoke with Hollandaise (my dish), butter poached white fish, an apple tart, and a tomato-based bruschetta.
And we ate everything that we made! Very yummy, I learned that I do not have the arm/wrist for making Hollandaise without a blender or food processor.
It was $70 for the class, but well worth it considering the meal. Quite yummy, and none of it was terribly difficult. I dropped another $50 on a cook book by the guy who conducted the class and a bunch of ramikens. Thursday we were in 'Cruces and picked up a cast iron skillet at the store. I really like this store, it's called Las Cosas and they have two locations: Santa Fe and Las Cruces/Mesilla. Back in July we spent over $300 on a really nice knife set and THEY SENT US A THANK YOU CARD! The nicest people: they don't just have the "please spend money here", they have an honesty and sincerity that makes it fun to shop there and talk to them.
I didn't even know there was a vacuum thingie in the drain line of a dw! I don't think ours does - the line seems to go from the dw to the disposal without anything in between.
Our first dw lasted about 6 months and leaked water all over the floor. It was a new house and dw so it was under warranty. We paid a bit extra and got a quieter model.. yippee! Still louder than current ones, but at least we don't turn it on and run!
We use gel packs in our dw - Cascade I think. We don't have really hard water here, just slightly.
I like the idea of blowing the water lines out!
The broiler went out on our stove about a year or so ago. Obviously, we don't broil much! I don't know if it's a self repairable part or we need to call the GE man. We had to call him a few years back when we had a gas leak- it was installed incorrectly and had been leaking for years! Until my sister came, smelled the gas, called the gas company and they red tagged it!
I have been to Dallas 5 times in the last 5 weeks, different reasons. Last one was to go to the fair. It was fun, riding DART train was an experience.
Peanut whines most of the way there and back. We stop and let her sniff and mark but she wants to mark all the way up and back. We threatened to hang her out the window so she can mark the whole way At least she doesn't get car sick any more!
Been playing Farmville on FB the last few days. I tried to get out of playing cause I knew I'd get sucked in but my friends and cousins dragged me kicking and screaming!
Glad you got your shots! I got the seasonal flu shot, waiting for the H1N1. I'm pretty healthy overall, but ever since 2001 I get bronchitis after every cold or flu and it sends me to the ER if I don't catch it fast enough (it sets my asthma off)

I'm just curious....I've had several paranormal experiences in my life....one of them, even Eeyorus knows about (LOL I may have to jog her memory but it has to do with the movie white noise when it first came out a few years ago).
Has anyone else had any paranormal experiences in their lives? I'd love to hear about them. I'll post mine later on...but since it's nearing Halloween, I thought perhaps it might be neat to share any that we've all had.
My brother and I stayed in our childhood home after my mom moved. He worked late so I was at home alone until 3am. I would hear doors opening, water running, footsteps and cooking sounds. Sometimes it was so noisy I would get up and yell out my bedroom "be quiet".
The noise would stop. I told my mom but she said it was probably the house settling. Several years later we sold the house. The new owner asked my mom if she had ever heard strange noises at night. My mom was stunned. Don't know who was there with us but they never bothered us in anyway.
Another thing happened several months ago. I was in bed falling asleep when I felt someone sit on the bed. I looked up no one there. I simply told it to go away I was tired. I felt the bed go back up as if they got up. Once again don't know who or what it was. I have not felt scared in either occasion.
Yes. When I was about 16 or 17 I felt a presence in my bedroom one night. My bedroom was in the front of the house and everyone else's was in the back. And I always slept with my door closed. Anyway, I swear it was an older man. He looked familiar, but I couldn't place who it was. Just the fact that someone was in my bedroom freaked me out so I scooted down in the bed and covered my head and hoped to God that he would just go away. I guess I fell asleep because next thing I knew it was morning. I asked my dad if he'd come into my room last night and he said no, why? I told him I thought someone was in my room. He told me I must've been dreaming. A few years later - after I was married - my mother-in-law (who was big into this stuff) asked me if anyone had died around that time. I told her yes, my mom's dad died around the time I turned 16. She said it was probably just him checking in on me making sure I was ok. Sure - but the man looked more like my dad who looked NOTHING like my mom's dad.
I'm sure there are others, but that one sticks out in my mind tonight.

(angelically demonic fairy)
Well, I've had many in my lifetime. The first time I guess you could say that I really came face to face with an entity was when I moved in with FaithAyn in 2001. I was lying in bed, and was sleeping, and I felt like someone was standing over me staring at me. When I opened my eyes, it was a black entity (like the bad ones on the movie Ghost with Patrick Swayze). When it realized I saw it, it got a horrified look on it's face and withdrew into the corner of the room. FaithAyn had to come and get rid of it for me.
Also, when I lived down the street from where I lived now, I had 2 resident spirits...a young boy and girl. The little girl would go into both my daughters' rooms and play with their toys when they weren't around...I'd often find that after the girls had cleaned their rooms, toys would be everywhere. The little boy used to unlock my sliding glass doors to the patio and leave the door cracked. I used to think it was my kids, but it would happen that way while everyone was at work or school. We'd check the door in the morning and it'd be locked and secure, and we'd come home (the kids were in after school care) all at the same time to find it cracked and unlocked.
Then there's the fact that when White Noise first came out....I had call notes on my home phone (built in answering service provided by the phone company). But the main phone I had also had an answering machine built into it. One day after White Noise first came out, I came home and heard "beep beep beep" and I went into my room and hit the button, and heard a bunch of...you guessed it, white noise, like tv static. I didn't think much about it, and I deleted the message. For the next three days this happened, each day the white noise would get louder and it would sound like there was whispering in the background. Finally, I decided to unhook that phone, wrap it up and put it in the cabinet.
Here comes the wicked part. I was on the phone with E one night, on my cell phone, and I was telling her about the movie. I got a call waiting beep from an unknown number and I switched over...and guess what?? WHITE NOISE!!! talk about GIVING ME THE CREEPS!
Anyways, I've got resident ghosts now, I've even been on a ghost hunt to an old abandoned jail in Louisiana and have picture proof of existance...at least, well, it's just proof.
LOTS of stuff that happens, doors opening and closing, faucets turning off and on, lights, etc.
Of course, I guess maybe when you're Gifted...that sort of thing is par for the course. My oldest daughter sees spirits - my youngest has premonitions, my son has remote viewing and I have many different Gifts.
It's never been something that frightened me a lot....but....it has scared me once in awhile.
A "psychic" once told me I had characteristics (aura, whatever) that would keep anything from manifesting if I was around. For whatever that's worth, I've never run across any ghosties.
Thank you Kel, Bt and Mai for all your dollz and gifs.
