I had always loved Rolex...since receiving a SS DJ for my 21st bday in 1989. But had never explored vintage or the watches in detail. Just knew I loved how they looked. About 3 years ago I was at a small arcade in London and looked in the window of a small watch shop. For a few years I'd been wanting a new YG Daytona on strap. But in the window I saw a SS Daytona that had a really cool looking dial. I went inside and asked to try it on, figuring that since it was used and SS it would be much more affordable than a YG Strap Daytona. On my wrist it was perfection...even the smaller size was great as i have a small wrist. I asked "much much". The shop lady suggested I sit down. The quoted price: 70K GBP! Turns out it was a PN that, according to the lady, had been owned by an Italian collector who "wrote the book" on Daytonas! Well, that was that for "Paul" but there was another watch in the window I really liked and I asked "what about that one with the Orange hand? I like that too". "Oh, that's a Steve McQueen....20K GBP"
Well, at least it confirmed I had good taste without even knowing it! Since then, I've become a huge 1655 nut and have gotten that grail watch and I love it. But the PN on the wrist--if even for a few minutes--was priceless.
