In 1978 I took an extended leave from my home and job in New Orleans to stay with my mother during my father's treatment for cancer. After spending 4 months at his bedside and providing comfort and assistance to my mom my dispatcher called and offered a challenging assignment offshore. The job lasted just two weeks and upon completion I learned that my father's time was short. I arrived back in Los Angeles just 24 hours after his passing. In her grief my mother bestowed my dad's Submariner to my brother in law. At the time I thought nothing of it as he had been a loving and trusted husband to my sister. I had a Submariner of my own and it wasn't until many years later after developing a fondness for collecting Rolex diving watches the angst of not having that watch set in. I do have the luxury of being able to admire from a distance dad's watch when I visit my sister and brother in law. It is one of his most cherished possessions.
