The story about my 5510 starts in Lucerne Switzerland in 1980. My new wife and I were touring europe when I pointed out a Rolex Sub in a jewellery store window exclaiming it was the watch I had always wanted. She told me to buy it and when we returned to the store the next day it was closed for the day (a Sunday). Since we were leaving for Germany I missed my chance.
Jump ahead to my 40th birthday. My wife remembered the Rolex I always wanted and for my 40th birthday she visited my brother who was working in a pawn shop at the time to see if they had any Rolexes available. They did! So she proudly presented me with a 6694 for my birthday (close but not a Sub)!
I kept in touch with my brother with regards to a Sub becoming available. Wouldn't you know it one became available (really 2 Subs became available, an old Rolex and a new Tudor). My brother decided he'd take the new Sub and I purchased the old one. Now the problem with this is, we were a one income family and it was hard to justify a second Rolex watch (besides the 6694). My birthday was coming up so I had my brother call my 7 year old son and to tell him that he had the perfect gift for his father and it would cost $10. My wife took my son to my brothers store and my son ran in with $10 and returned with a wrapped gift that he presented to me for my birthday. To my wife's surprise it was a Rolex Sub which I proudly started to wear.
Jump ahead another 8 years I've been wearing the Sub as my daily wearer (everything from changing the car's oil to reaching into the lake to retrieve the fish I had just caught). The bracelet broke at the clasp. I took it to the local AD who sent it to RSC Canada for an estimate. $900 to replace the bracelet (it only cost me $300 to buy). I decided to search the web for a cheaper solution. I found Timezone and posted my question about the bracelet. When asked to post a picture i did. It was at this time I discovered the value of my Sub. It was a 5510.
Now I'm afraid to wear!
I decided that I should sell it to someone who would appreciate the watch more that I did (but I insisted that a get a 5513 as part of the payment) and sold the watch to a nice TZ'er.
When seeing some posts here of gilted Subs and sometimes wished I had kepted 5510.
