BOOKS I HAVE READ IN 2001: (in reverse order)
THE LANGUAGE OF THE GENES by Steve Jones, Flamingo, London, 2000, revised edition. Jones discusses what genetics can and cannot tell us about human evolution and patterns of social development. He deals with genes in terms of cultural, demographic and linguistic history.
THE BATTLE FOR GOD by Karen Armstrong, Ballantine Books, New York, 2001. Armstrong attempts to explain why, in today's age of reason and technology, religious fundamentalism has emerged as an overwhelming force in Christianity, Judaism and Islam.
She explores the development of Protestant fundamentalism in America, Jewish fundamentalism in Israel, and Islamic fundamentalism in Egypt and Iran.
