it's not burning oil, the oil is getting burnt out early
I do have to add about a quart every 1,000-1,500 miles, but I attribute that mostly to a bad crush washer on the drain plug that is getting replaced next oil change. My driveway attests to the fact that it's leaking not getting burned. (that reminds me, maybe I'll pressure wash the driveway next week to get rid of all the oil spots)
The oil problem I am having is that by the time I hit 3000 miles, the oil in the pan is really burned up and quite dark. I went to a semi-synthetic to try and get longer life from it, but that didn't work and I don't want to wear the bottom end any further than I have to.
The biggest thing that put me toward this diagnosis was input from other Defender owners, as well as a company that specializes in these engines.
